When you think of super heroes, who comes to mind? I think of Captain America, Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk, Batman, Superman and Mr. Incredible. Have you ever heard of Antboy?
In select theaters today (April 16, 2014) comes the family friendly action adventure film Antboy.
Antboy is a Danish film that has been seamlessly dubbed into English. It wasn’t until I noticed background text in the film done in Dutch that I realized the film was dubbed in English. The actor’s mouths and the words are matched perfectly.
Antboy is the story of a 12 year old boy name Pelle. Pelle literally blends into the background. No one ever notices him. He’s almost invisible in the sense that no one really notices him. At least nerds get picked on and bullied. No one even knows that Pelle is around.
One day Pelle stops a pair of bullies from beating up a fellow classmate, Wilhelm. The bullies chase Pelle who was able to hide in the bushes in someone’s front yard. While he was waiting for the bullies to leave Pelle is bitten by an ant. Unbeknown to Pelle at that time it was no ordinary ant that bit him. It was a genetically altered ant who passes along ant-like super powers to Pelle.
The only other person who knows about Pelle’s powers is Wilhelm. Wilhelm is really into super heroes so he turns Pelle into the super hero Antboy, complete with a costume to hide his true identity.
Antboy is soon called to action when his classroom crush, Amanda, is kidnapped by a villain name The Flea. Antboy is able to rescue Amanda but that only angers The Flea who has a gripe against Antboy and is plotting something against him. Meanwhile Antboy becomes a hero in the eyes of the town and Pelle’s classmates – none of which know it’s really Pelle.
Will the true identity of Antboy be found out? What does The Flea have planned for the little hero? Will Pelle’s powers last or will something happen to them? To find out you need to see Antboy, now playing in select theaters across the country.
I honestly didn’t go into watching this film expecting anything much more then something you would see on the Disney Channel or Cartoon Network. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this film was really good.
When I first heard of “Antboy”, I thought the film would be silly. It was not. It was entertaining – even for an adult. The characters are all very likeable. The special effects are wonderful and the plot was interesting enough to hold my attention the entire time. There were even a few comic-book style visuals throughout the film which would appeal to comic book fans. I am also very impressed that you cannot tell that the move was dubbed in English.
The film is rated PG. I think that is only because there are a few fight scenes. The film also runs for around 75 minutes.
I believe the film is based on an actual comic series too.

I have never heard of Antboy, but it sounds like an interesting story. The boy is bitten by a genetically altered ant just like Peter Parker was bitten by a genetically altered spider to become Spiderman. This is definitely something that I would watch, thank you for sharing this review post.
