The pandemic has forced all of us to make a lot of changes. Some good, and some not-so-good. Schools have been closed. Vacations have been cancelled. Simply having a play date with a best friend is out of the picture at this moment in time.
As a parent, I remember when my kids were home for the summer. They went to town camp a few days per week (they opted not to go every day). On the days they didn’t go, I always looked for fun things to do with them, whether is was spending the day at the park, going for a hike, or going to a movie.
It’s nice to see that summer camp is open in some parts of the country. Where I live our YMCA summer camp is open, but sadly, it’s at about 50% capacity compared to years past. I guess many parents are opting to keep their kids at home this year. I honestly don’t blame them. If my kids were still young, I would most likely not have sent them to camp this year.
You can still give your child the fun and excitement of going to camp by putting together your own camp at home. It’s easy enough to do, and you wouldn’t need many supplies. All you would really need is a yard or a park space you can visit.
To get you started, I have a list of fun things you can do with your family at your own backyard summer camp.
HyperStrike (Zing) – A competitive camping activity for those who are 14 and up! Zing’s HyperStrike bow launches over 250ft! Set up a creative “archery” display for your kids to try out and test their aim/range! Available on Amazon for $29.97.
This looks like a really cool toy. I have seen videos on this toy on YouTube and it looks like a lot of fun.
Chalk of the Town T-Shirt (Chalk of the Town) – Dream it, draw it, wear it! These fun chalk t-shirt kits are a great way to customize your family camp, PLUS they’re erasable, re-usable and machine washable! Available now on Amazon for $29.95. For some added camp flare, use these great Happy Camper stencils.
This is such a cute idea! I love it.
DinoMazing Egg Decorator (Hey Buddy Hey Pal) – Pop in one of the plastic eggs included with the kit and let the decorating begin. Use the different colored markers, to add stripes, lines or other fun “prehistoric” designs to decorate your egg. Once the eggs are found you can “crack” open the shell to discover a surprise mini collectible dinosaur dripping in cool colored slime! Available on Amazon for $27.99. OR, Hide the eggs around your yard (or even inside the house) for the ultimate at-home scavenger hunt!
All Around the Campfire
Reel Roaster (Hog Wild Toys) – Who doesn’t love ending a day of “camp” with s’mores!? The Reel Roaster, designed like a fishing rod, allows you to roast s’mores, hot dogs, or any kind of camping treat over a campfire! Available on Amazon for $15.99.
Nothing says summer time than some freshly made s’mores on an open fire. I’m “old fashioned” where I prefer to hunt for a stick to use around the camp site, but I can also see the appeal of using this fun device too.
Family Camping Trip (PLAYMOBIL) – The imaginative play set perfect for camping! Complete with the iconic PLAYMOBIL attention to detail, this set is complete with a foldable tent, sleeping bags, a table and chairs! Available on Amazon for $28.99.
I was sent this set to review.
The PLAYMOBIL Family Camping Trip play set comes with everything you would need for a fun camping trip – from pots, pans and food, to furniture and a large tent. The set even comes with animals.
The set comes with a table and four fabric covered folding bench-like chairs. Also included with the set is a table top stove, pots and pans, plates, cups and food.
The interesting thing about this set is that it comes with a “power” source (not a working one). If you have ever gone camping at a campground, often you get outlets where you can plug in things that require electricity. With this set you get the power source and even a plug so you can plug in the ice cooler.
A word to the wise. I though the included string was a bit too long, so I tried cutting it. DON’T! The string frays very easily once you cut it. In hindsight I should have left it “as is” because it’s not that long at all.
The “power box” has a door that opens so you can “plug in” the power chord. There are also numbers you can put on it to designate the camp site number. I opted for #34 and #35.
I like that they included some flowers on the piece where the power box is kept.
The set comes with three people (it looks like a dad and two children, but the female character could also be a mom). The set also comes with a cat, after all, the family pet enjoys a vacation too.
There are three fabric sleeping bags too.
I love that PLAYMOBIL thought of everything including a lantern and a Frisbee.
The “chest” the cute little squirrel is on also doubles as a place to store some of the smaller pieces.
You can see one of the sleeping bags in the background (yellow).
The tote bag has sunscreen and flip flops inside (not pictured). They really thought of everything.
The tent is made out of fabric with Velcro strips to close the ten up when your “campers” are ready to go to bed.
I like that many of the smaller pieces fit inside the trunk for safe keeping. If you are familiar with PLAYMOBIL sets you know that some of the pieces are teeny tiny and can get lost easily.
The cat and the squirrels are a nice addition to this play set.
When you are done playing with the set you can put everything inside of the tent and use the Velcro strips to seal it closed for safe keeping.
You can easily tote the tent (filled with the pieces) around with you. It’s a nice, compact set.
Pop and Pass (Hog Wild Toys) – Pop and Pass brings playing catch to a whole new level of fun! Grab a launcher to insert the soft foam ball, pull back the handle to load, and get ready to launch! Great for one-on-one or team play! Available on Amazon for $34.99.
