Coming to theaters on March 30, 2012 is the movie Mirror Mirror, based upon the classic tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Mirror Mirror stars Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane.

I wrote about the film yesterday, but in case you missed it here is the movie’s synopsis;

Oddly enough my husband said it looked like a funny movie too and he said he’s go and see it. It’s not a “manly” film but I think the humor will appeal to everyone. Plus it looks visually stunning.

I have been following the movie Mirror Mirror since last year when I first heard about it. There are actually two movies coming out this year based on the classic story of Snow White. Mirror Mirror is the family friendly version, and judging by the trailer, it’s going to be really funny too.

On February 7, 2012, the movie Fireflies in the Garden will be released on Blu-ray and DVD. The movie stars Julia Roberts, Willem Dafoe and Ryan Reynolds.

I didn’t see the movie in the theater but I do recall seeing the previews for it on TV. It looked interesting. I also like Ryan Reynolds. He was perfect in the movie Best Friends, so I was curious to see how he did it a much more dramatic and serious role.

This movie was nothing like I thought it would be. It was an emotional roller coaster!

Fireflies in the Garden is the story of the Taylor family. To the outside world they seem like the perfect family. The father, Charles (Dafoe) is a successful college professor who is on his way to becoming the university president. His lovely wife, Lisa (Roberts) quit college to take care of her children and it just about to graduate with her degree.

Charles and Lisa have two children, Michael (Reynolds), who is a successful romance novelist and Ryne (played by Shannon Lucio) who is about to enter law school.

This family is far from perfect.

On their way to Lisa’s sister Jane’s house for a celebration honoring Lisa’s graduation, Charles and Lisa are in a serious accident and Lisa it tragically killed. The accident occur when Charles tried not to hit Jane’s son Christopher when he ran out in front of their car.

Fireflies in the Garden bounces back and forth to present time (when Lisa is killed) and in the past when Michael and Ryne were children. Their home life was far from idyllic.

Charles was a VERY strict father, which put a huge strain on his father-son relationship with Michael. You can tell as an adult how much animosity there is towards Michael and his father. Let’s just say they have a very volatile and explosive relationship. You can see how much it effects the entire family, including Lisa. She is the one that helped keep the family together. She had to be strong for her family.

With Lisa’s passing old wounds are opened up and secrets are discovered that will turn the family upside down.

Will the Taylors ever find a way to come together and be a family again, or are the scars too deep and memories too hurtful to ever allow that to happen? What secrets are revealed and how do they effect the family?

To find out the answers you’ll need to pick up a copy of Fireflies in the Garden.

This is what I would call a “deep” movie. Even my husband said that he needed to down a pint of ice cream after watching it (referring to how people gravitate towards ice cream when they are upset). As I mentioned earlier, it’s an emotional roller coaster.

I think Ryan Reynolds did an excellent job as the part of Micheal. I still prefer him in comedic roles, but he can clearly pull off serious, dramatic roles too.

Willem Dafoe was the perfect choice for the father, Charles. I couldn’t imagine another actor in that role. His mannerisms and facial expressions made me dislike the character of Charles even more. 

Julia Roberts did a great job as the part of Lisa. But I think most of the credit should go to Reynolds and Dafoe. I think they really made the movie.

If you are into serious and some what depressing dramas, then this is the movie for you. This is far from a light-hearted movie. Far, far, far from it. Make sure to have tissues on hand too. Trust me.

It was a good movie. My husband said he’ll never watch it again because it was TOO ’deep” for him.

Coming to theaters on February 17, 2012 is the movie The Secret Life of Arrietty. The story is based upon the acclaimed children’s book series by Mary Norton called “The Borrowers.”

I have posted about the movie a few times. Just in case you didn’t get a chance to read the posts, here is a brief synopsis of the film;

Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger. The English language version of “The Secret World of Arrietty” was executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and directed by Gary Rydstrom.

The Secret World of Arrietty is from the legendary Studio Ghibli (“Spirited Away,” “Ponyo”).

-   Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most influential and admired filmmakers working in animation today and is a major figure in the Japanese cinematic landscape. His films have inspired moviegoers and colleagues around the world, from Pixar’s John Lasseter to fantasist Guillermo del Toro to Chinese director Tsui Hark, and consistently top the box office in his native Japan.

-   Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, a top animator at Studio Ghibli, was responsible for the animation in a signature scene in “Ponyo,” in which Ponyo runs atop ocean waves.

-   English language voice talent director Gary Rydstrom is a seven-time Academy Award winning sound designer/mixer (“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”). He joined Pixar Animation Studios as an animation film director in 2003.  His directorial debut for the studio was the Academy Award-nominated short film “Lifted,” and he directed the short film “Hawaiian Vacation,” which was released with “Cars 2” in June 2011.

-   Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are highly successful producing partners whose films, separately and together, include “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “E.T.,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?,” the Indiana Jones films and the Jurassic Park films. In total, Kennedy and Marshall have earned 11 Oscar® nominations.

-   English language screenplay writer Karey Kilpatrick’s credits include “Spiderwick Chronicles” and “Over the Hedge,” which he also directed (with Tim Johnson).

If you are a fan of the Twilight series you’ll be excited to know that on February 10, 2012 Walmart is celebrating the release of Breaking Dawn Part I with a special release party.

I haven’t see Breaking Dawn Part I yet. My daughter was fortunate to see it in the theater with a friend, but I have not seen it yet. I am anxious to see it.

When the Twilight series first came out I didn’t see the appeal in it. After I watched the first movie, Twilight, I got hooked. I wouldn’t consider myself a huge fan by any means, but I do enjoy the series and I’m curious to see how it ends.

For those of you who live and breath the Twilight series, or even those like me who just enjoy it, you should mark your calendar for February 10, 2012.

Starting at 11 p.m., Walmart will host midnight release parties in over 2,700 stores with special giveaways, movie trivia and a bakery stocked with Twilight­-themed treats such as cupcakes and cakes.

Ambush is a low-rent circuit bot. The best fight that Charlie can arrange for Ambush is literally against a piece of livestock.

Atom may not be in the biggest or the flashiest bot in the ring, but he is the most extraordinary. He is the “hero” robot.

Colored in gold and red, Midas sports a mohawk. He’s a brawler. He follows no rules. He’ll use whatever means necessary to win a fight.

Noisy Boy is a former league bot. When he started losing fights, he was exiled to doing boxing exhibitions in South America and Asia. He’s now back, but he’s no longer league caliber, so he’s fighting in underworld venues.

With a block-shaped upper body, Twin Cities is a vicious two-headed robot!

Zeus is the champ of the WRB. He is enormous. He is described as “The Death Star.” He is painted reflected black. He has piston-programmed punch mechanisms in his arms. Not only has Zeus never been beaten, but also, no other robot has even survived beyond the first round with him.

I know. You probably think I’m crazy for posting about a movie that doesn’t come to theaters for another 8 months. OK, so I might be a wee bit off my rocker – – but the truth be told – I LOVE FINDING NEMO! It’s actually a favorite of mine, as well as my husband. In fact my husband sometimes quotes line from the character Dory (played by Ellen DeGeneres).

I’m sure many people have already seen the film. It’s great to know that Finding Nemo is going to be seen by a whole new generation. This Academy Award winning Best Animated Film winner returns to the big screen for the first time ever in thrilling Disney Digital 3D.

In this stunning underwater adventure, with memorable characters, humor and heartfelt emotion, Finding Nemo follows the comedic and momentous journey of an overly protective clownfish named Marlin (voice by Albert Brooks) and his son Nemo (voice by Alexander Gould)––who become separated in the Great Barrier Reef when Nemo is unexpectedly taken far from his ocean home and dumped into a fish tank in a dentist’s office. Buoyed by the companionship of Dory, a friendly-but-forgetful Pacific regal blue tang, Marlin embarks on a dangerous trek and finds himself the unlikely hero of an epic effort to rescue his son––who hatches a few daring plans of his own to return safely home.

The movie is not only funny but very heartwarming too. It’s the perfect family film!

Here are some interesting facts about the movie. 

-  Finding Nemo won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

-  The film won a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture–Musical or Comedy.

-  At the time of its release, Finding Nemo was the highest grossing G-rated movie of all time.

-  Ellen DeGeneres won an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance.

-  In 2008, The American Film Institute named Finding Nemo among the top 10 greatest animated films ever made.

The movie was stunning to begin with. I cannot imagine seeing their beautiful underwater world in 3D. I bet it’s going to be amazing!

Have you seen the comedy called The Big Year yet? It’s stars Steve Martian, Jack Black and Owen Wilson. I have not seen the movie yet but it sounds funny. I have only seen the movie’s trailer.

Here is a brief description of the film.

Three men from different walks of life, find that they have come to a turning point. Stu (Steve Martin) is facing a late-life crisis, Kenny (Owen Wilson) is dealing with his midlife crisis. Brad (Jack Black) is doesn’t really have a life to begin with so he’s facing his own no-life crisis.

The men are very determined to do something with their lives. So they decide to enter a prestigious bird watching contest. They have one calendar year to count more species of birds than anyone else. Their quest has the men criss-crossing North America on a hilarious adventure that will eventually help them to form special friendships.

I love Steve Martin and Jack Black. This movie should be very funny. 

Have you ever gone bird watching? I haven’t personally but we do have a Blue Jay that lives in our complex that we see a lot. And I notice Cardinals from time to time.

A few times I’ve had to rescue birds who smack into the glass by the stairwell in our building. They don’t die but tend to be stunned at “out of it”. I rescue them and keep them on our balcony until they are ready to fly away. While I have them I try and look them up on the Internet to see if I can identify them.

I do have a bird watching book too. I picked it up to help me identify birds I see from time to time that I don’t recognize.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is releasing this funny adventure comedy on Blu-ray and DVD on January 31, 2012.

The Big Year is directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada, Marley & Me) and features outrageous supporting performances from Joel McHale (Community), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Angelica Huston (50/50), Dianne Wiest (In Treatment), Brian Dennehy (The Next Three Days), Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation), Kevin Pollak (Red State) and Anthony Anderson (Scream 4). The Blu-ray is packed with special features including the theatrical and extended editions of the film including over 40 minutes of deleted scenes. Wow! that is a lot of deleted scenes. Plus there is a fun featurette called “The Big Migration.”

The theme of the movie, The Big Year, is about having the ”Biggest Year Ever”. Something that you are proud of and that you’ll look back fondly on for the rest of your life.

I remember when my husband and I first saw commercials for the movie In Time on TV. The movie looked really good. My husband is a hard person to impress when it comes to movies, and even he thought the movie looked good. We both couldn’t wait for it to be released on Blu-ray/DVD so that we could check it out.

In Time will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on January 31, 2011.

In Time stars Justin Timberlake as Will Salas. Him and his mother (played by Olivia Wilde) live in the “slums” where people hav to work long and hard just to get by.

They live in a futuristic world (presumably Earth) where everyone is genetically altered to age until they are 25 years old. This would explain why Olivia Wilde, who is close in age to Justin Timberlake in real life, plays the part of his mother. The moment you turn 25 a count down clock appears on your arm, giving you exactly one more year to live. That might seem like a lot, but it’s not. Everything you do ends up costing you “time”. Time is their currency. For example, if you want a cup of coffee it will cost you 4 minutes of time off of your life. Your rent could cost you a month’s worth of time. It varies.

If you are luck enough to have a job it could earn you more time (not much, maybe a day at best). Many people literally live day by day in this film.

It is possible to give other people your time by griping their arm. The local mission tries to give out time as often as it has any to spare (which is next to never).

One day tragedy strikes and Will finds himself a lone. One evening he meets a mysterious man who has 100 years worth of time, which would make him some what immortal. However he doesn’t want the time. He feels he’s lived too long as it is and just wants to get rid of it.

After helping the mysterious man escape some thugs who wanted to steal his time, the stranger passes all his time off to Will before let his own time run out. Will could not save him before he passed away.

Having all of this extra time prompts Will to enter Greenwich, a rich and powerful time zone where everyone seems to live forever. There he meets Sylvia Weis, the beautiful daughter of one of the most powerful people in Greenwich. Soon afterwards Will learns some important information about what is going on and why some people are literally living forever while other people are dying because their time is up.

Together with Slyvia, the pair go on a terror spree, robbing time from the rich and giving it away to those who need it the most. The whole time they are being chased by the Time Keepers (Police) and thugs who are trying to steal their time and collect the reward.

I don’t want to give away too much of the movie. If you are interested in learning more pick up a copy of In Time, available on January 31, 2011.

I thought this was an interesting movie, but it did leave a lot of unanswered questions. I am curious to know when was this movie suppose to take place (how far into the future) and whose silly idea was it to genetically engineer people to age to 25, then only have a year left of time before they die. It’s just a very odd concept.

The movie did get me thinking a lot about what would I want to spend my precious time on. If I only had one year left of time I would not waste it on frivolous things. As much as I love coffee it’s not worth 4 minutes of time. I also wouldn’t buy a fancy car if it was going to cost me month, or even years worth of time.

In a way maybe this movie is suppose to make you think. Maybe the message is that we should live more simply and not take our time here on Earth for granted. There are more important things to devote our time to.

Cillian Murphy plays the part of the Time Keeper (Police), name Raymond Leon. I think he did a great job playing his part.

Alex Pettyfer (I am Number Four) played the part of Fortis, the thug who was going around stealing time from others. He played his character well too.

I like Justin Timberlake as an actor, but I see him more in comedic roles then serious ones like this. Don’t get me wrong, he did a good job. I just think I prefer him in comedies.

I’d give In Time three out of five stars. It was a good movie, entertaining and made you think. I just didn’t like how it left a lot of unanswered questions and it got confusing at time.

Coming to theaters on February 3, 2012 is a new film by Universal Pictures called Big Miracle. It is rated PG and stars Drew Barrymore, John Krasinsi, Kristen Bell, Dermot Mulroney, Tim Blake Nelson and Ted Danson.

Here is the movie’s official synopsis;

Inspired by the true story that captured the hearts of people across the world, the rescue adventure Big Miracle tells the amazing tale of a small town news reporter (John Krasinski) and an animal-loving volunteer (Drew Barrymore) who are joined by rival world superpowers to save a family of majestic gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle.

Local newsman Adam Carlson (Krasinski) can’t wait to escape the northern tip of Alaska for a bigger market. But just when the story of his career breaks, the world comes chasing it, too. With an oil tycoon, heads of state and hungry journalists descending upon the frigid outpost, the one who worries Adam the most is Rachel Kramer (Barrymore). Not only is she an outspoken environmentalist, she’s also his ex-girlfriend.

With time running out, Rachel and Adam must rally an unlikely coalition of Inuit natives, oil companies and Russian and American military to set aside their differences and free the whales. As the world’s attention turns to the top of the globe, saving these endangered animals becomes a shared cause for nations entrenched against one another and leads to a momentary thaw in the Cold War.
