Is anyone familiar with vision boards? Does anyone use vision boards to help them to achieve their goals and dreams? I’m seriously considering starting one.

If you are not familiar with a vision board, or have never even heard of the term before, let me explain it a bit.

A vision board is a board (poster board, cork board…) where you put images that “speak to you”. They can be images of things you want out of life (a dream vacation, a beautiful house, a fancy car) or they can be visions of things that inspire you (a colorful photograph, an image of a child). Some people have been known to create vision boards of images that they are not 100% sure why they are attracted to them but hold on to them to see if their purpose and meaning becomes clear to them one day.

The purpose of a vision board is to keep your mind focused on the things you want to achieve in life, or to use it as your muse to inspire you to write, create artwork or for some other purpose. The vision board gives your “vision” clarity and helps to keep your attention on your intentions. If you look at it every day it helps you to keep your “eye on the prize”, so to speak. It can also be used as a force to help reinforce your daily affirmations.

I have heard vision boards are also similar to The Secret, which all the range a few years ago. The vision board is a place for things in your life that are positive. As per The Secret when you think about positive things, positivity is attracted to you. It is suppose to help you achieve your goals and dreams.

I have an “online vision board”, so to speak. I bookmark on my computer things I really want in life. For example, one of my dreams is to own a house. I want a house with a yard where I can grow a garden and plant Lilacs. I would love for my children and our pets to have a place to run around and play. I have even gone so far as to look up appliances online, as well as furniture, for my dream house.

Making a vision board is really easy. You can make a simple one with some poster board. Or you can use a large cork board. I’m looking to get a corkboard just in case I want to add or remove pictures as I go along.

Once you have the board you are going to use the next step is to go through magazines and cut out images that stand out to you and that “speak” to you some how. Perhaps it’s a photo of a couple on a beach that represents a dream vacation for you and your significant other. Or maybe you’ll find a photo of a gorgeous dress you would love to wear, which will inspire you to lose weight or save money so you can have such a dress.

Don’t worry about putting the pictures on your board just yet. First just gather the pictures that interest you.

After you have finished collecting pictures your next step is to lay them all out on the table and pick out your most favorite photos. Once you have your favorites you’ll need to figure out how you want to arrange them on the board. Do you want to put them on the board with no specific “game plan” or do you want to specify the different corners to represent different things (one corner could be goals, another for dreams, and another for creative inspiration…). The board is YOURS so it has to make sense to you and only you. Don’t worry about what others think.

Once you have the pictures arranged you need to attach them to the board. You can use tacks (cork board) or glue. If you use glue use a glue stick or rubber cement. Regular glue might make the images get bumpy and they won’t look as nice.

After your board is complete you need to hang it some place where you can look at it each and every day. For me, I’m going to hang mine by my desk. Other people might want to hang it in the bedroom, in the bathroom, or any where else you think you will have the chance to look at it and focus on it every day.

Do you have a vision board? I would love to hear about it. If you have been inspired to make one for yourself, what kind of images do you think your board would have?

For the record, vision boards are great for kids too!

Every now and then, usually late at night, I see a brief commercial for a loan service. We are NOT in the market for a loan (we have no need for one). The only reason why the commercial stands out to me is because it’s a very short commercial (30 seconds if that). The lady in the commercial also says, and I quote, “the money is expensive”. Ha! That is an Understatement.

The commercial goes by very quickly, and it’s difficult to make out the fine print. It looks to me like the interest rate is OVER 100%. Surely that can’t be possible.

HA!

Oh yeah… it’s possible.

On the commercial the interest rate is 116.73%. You read that correctly – 116.73%. That is their rate for a $5,000 loan. PLUS you have to pay a $75 loan fee on top of that.

But wait. It gets “better”.

The 116.73% interest rate is for a $5,000 loan. If you only need about half that amount you can take out a $2,600 loan (which includes the $75 loan fee) for a whopping 139.22% interest rate. And that is not even their higheset rate!

If you are just short some funds until your next paycheck, or need to have some emergency work done on your car, you can take out a measley $1,000 loan. HOWEVER… there is an unbelievable $500 loan fee – AND – the interest rate is a staggering 234.25%!!!

At these rates this is what you’ll end up paying.

$5,075 loan (includes the fee) @ 116.73% interest – 84 payments (7 years) totals $40,872.72

With their payment plan the $2,600 loan (including the $75 fee) will cost you $13,839.62.

The measly $1,000 loan, plus $500 loan fee ($1,500 total loan) will painfully cost you $4,756.56.

Don’t believe me. Here is the payment chart directly from the site.

The company is called Western Sky and yes, it’s 100% legal and legitimate. The company is on an Indian Reserve so they don’t follow the same rules that govern regular banking and loan institutions.

What makes me really sad (and at the same time scared) is the fact that there are people who are either so desperate for money that they are willing to agree to such astronomical interest rates and fees. Plus there are many people out there who are blissfully unaware of the interest rates because they choose not to read and understand the fine print that are suckered into this loan.

My family has found ourselves in dire need of $$$ from time to time. We have never been THAT desperate to take up such an insane loan offer.

If you need money please exhaust all options before signing your life away with a loan like this. Borrow money from friends and family, sell stuff on Ebay and Craigslist, get a part time job, pawn anything you have of value. Do whatever it takes so that you don’t have to resort to a loan like this.

And remember… ALWAYS read the fine print.

The survey helps me to understand who visits and reads She Scribes so I can create better content geared towards those who read my blog. This information is also helpful for companies to know and helps to determine what kind of giveaways I can offer.

You can find the survey here: http://bit.ly/z4k2wK.

Be on the look out for some great (positive!) changes here on She Scribes. I am super, duper, incredibly excited about it! I won’t give away too much of the secret but let’s just say it will be easier to find things (like giveaway winners – FINALLY!). I am hopeful by the end of next week everything will be in place. I hope you like the new changes too.

If you haven’t heard about the Internet Blackout set for Wednesday, January 18, 2012, you must be living under a rock, or you are from another planet (I kid ).

Tomorrow you might be in for a rude awakening if you try to access your favorite websites. That is because they WON’T be there. They will be taken down for the entire day. It’s just to give you an idea of what the Internet would be like if the two bills, SOPA and PIPA, get passed.

Some confirmed websites that will not be available during the blackout include;

Google, Wikipedia, Mozilla, Reddit, Green Peace International, Imgur, TwitPic, Free Press, Minecraft, the entire icanhazCheezburger Network (Fail Blog, Very Demotivational…) and WordPress. I am not sure if that includes blogs that are on WordPress (mine is a WordPress blog).

These are just SOME of the companies that will be participating in the blackout tomorrow. Some suspect possibly Facebook and Twitter, but they have not confirmed that. I am pretty sure Twitter will be up and running tomorrow.

I know some blogs are going dark tomorrow as well. Keep in mind this will be a SMALL sampling of what the Internet will be like if SOPA and PIPA pass.

There is a lot of informaiton about both acts available on the Internet. Here are a few links that explains more about them.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/248298/sopa_and_pipa_just_the_facts.html

http://mashable.com/2012/01/17/sopa-pipa

http://www.1stwebdesigner.com/design/how-sopa-pipa-can-affect-you.

It’s best that you take to the Internet and Google them to learn more. In fact Google has a link on it’s home page where you can tell Congress NOT to censor the web and freedom of speech.

Basically the government wants to do MORE then just stop piracy – they want to control the entire Internet. If the bills pass there will be no YouTube. You could be fine – OR JAILED – if you post a video of your 3 year old singing a Taylor Swift song on Facebook. If someone so much as utters a complaint about you, or a SPAM person leaves a comment on your site with a link to an illegal site – YOU WILL BE WIPED OFF THE FACE OF THE INTERNET! The government will wipe your website or online account off the map, never to be seen again.

There is a lot more to them but I thought I’d give you some basic ideas.

I’m all for stopping piracy and the bad things that go on around the Internet, but this is taking it to the extreme. MILLIONS of websites will be removed from the Internet, and that includes businesses. MILLIONS of people will be out of work. The economy will take a serious nose dive. I’m thinking along the lines of the Great Depression.

There is so much garbage going on with our country that needs to be addressed like homeless people, hunger, drug abuse, education… Does the government REALLY need to waste valuable time and resources to shut down someone’s personal blog because she has a picture of her daughter wearing a Mickey Mouse (copyrighted image) t-shirt? GIVE ME A BREAK!

What are your thoughts about this? Are you planning on going dark tomorrow?

I am NOT a perfect parent. I’m far from that. I wouldn’t even say I was a great parent. I’m a good parent who tries very hard each and every day to do the very best that I can for my children. For the most part I think I’ve raised fairly decent children (attitudes aside of course).

Let me give you a little background on my son. My son was born 2+ months premature. His birthday is in September.

When my daughter (who is 2+ years older then my son) was in Kindergarten her teacher, who had 30+ years teaching experience, told us NOT to put our son into preschool, even if he was old enough. She said it would be best for him if we waited another year. Did we listen? No.

When our son was going to turn 4 we enrolled him into Pre-K. That year he did OK as far as colors, shapes and other things that children that age learn. His teacher’s only concern was his socialization. She felt he was going to have an issue with that when he was in Kindergarten.

Kindergarten was a nightmare. He had THE WORST teacher – and she was a Kindergarten teacher no less. After that year she was moved into the 3rd grade. Myself and other parents had it put in our children’s files that when they reached 3rd grade she was NOT to be their teacher.

In first grade thing were rough. Our son could not keep up with the other children academically. He had no friends and just having a hard time overall. His teacher (the greatest teacher ever! ♥) felt that he should be left back. When we told her what our daughter’s Kindergarten teacher said she agreed. We should had waited to put him in school.

His teacher wanted to leave him behind to repeat first grade and we agreed. We figured it was better to do it now while they are young so that the other kids didn’t tease him as much, rather than have it happen later on. Sadly the school disagreed and passed him on into second grade.

EVERY YEAR has been a struggle. EVERY YEAR while he was in Elementary school we asked to have him left back and the school refused. In order to keep him from getting too far behind we’ve had to get him extra help before school, after school and even during school. We’ve had him see the school psychologist, he’s been to a pediatric neurologist, I have the teacher’s e-mails and phone numbers on speed dial. I have been to more parent-teacher conferences then I care to remember.

Over the years we have done EVERYTHING humanly possible to help him. Teachers have even gone so far as to let him do extra credit or offer to give up their lunch to help him.

The problem with our son is that he hates school. He truly, genuinely, hates school. He hates every moment of every day that he’s there. Needless to say getting him to do homework and projects is a nightmare. We have spoke to so many people (professionals) in hopes of finding a way of getting through to him.

Our son is in 7th grade now. The first quarter of 6th grade he was 4 points shy of making the Honor Roll. The remaining quarters of 6th grade he barely passed. This year (7th grade) he was 6 points shy of making the Honor Roll. Now we’re in the second quarter and we doubt he’s going to pass any of his classes. He’s failing pretty much all of his subjects except gym, band and Home & Careers.

We’re checked with his teachers. He doesn’t appear to be having a problem with any of his classmates. Bullying is always a concern with us since our son is shy and tends to keep to himself. The teachers tell us he gets along with everyone. His teachers seem to feel the fact that he hates school has A LOT to do with it.

We’ve fight with him daily to do his homework, but he either doens’t do it or doesn’t give it much effort.

The straw that broke the camel’s back came two weeks ago. His Science teacher called my husband at work. She said she was concerned about him. The kids are studying a hard subject this quarter (Genetics). She gave the students a “cheat sheet” and told them they could write down whatever information they wanted to on the sheet and they were allowed to refer to their sheet when they took the test. Basically it was an easy 100. Our son didn’t write down one thing on the paper and got a 40 (out of 100) on his test. Another Words not only did he fail but he failed badly.

We were livid! We grounded him by taking everything away from him – his phone, iPod, Nintendo DS and his beloved computer. We told him the ONLY way he was going to get them back was to show us he’s applying himself at school and bring up his grades. We don’t expect him to make the Honor Roll but we do expect him to do his best and we know he’s not.

Most kids would straighten up and apply themselves, or at least make an effort. Not our son. He’s not making any effort.

Our son has TWO project due, one this week and one next week. He had a three-day weekend. We told him time and time again to work on his projects and he refused. Rather then do homework and his projects he rather sit on the floor in his room playing with his toys. He’s not much of a TV watcher, but he does like to watch the Weather Channel and local news.

No matter what we say to him, or how much we try and reason with him or give him a taste of reality, it just doesn’t get through to him. If anything he gets very nasty and has a serious attitude with us.

I have been struggling to help him with school since day one. I’m tired. I don’t have it in me to fight anymore. I just want to toss in the towel.

Like I said earlier, I’m not a perfect parent, but I do the best that I can do. So does it make me a “bad” parent if I don’t help him anymore when it comes to school? Am I a “bad” parent if I don’t remind him of his projects or nag him about getting his homework done? Am I “bad” if I let him do what he wants to do with his schoolwork, even if that means he fails and gets left behind, then we have to deal with the other kids teasing him about it?

Part of me wants him to be left behind. First of all he SHOULD be one grade behind of where he is now (remember we put him in school too early). I am also hoping if he was left behind he’d be so mortified that he’d finally get his act together and apply himself at school. He has to learn that everything has a consequence, and not doing his homework or studying for tests, cause him to fail and he’d have no one to blame for himself.

At the same time if he fails I feel like the school and teachers are going to think that we’re horrible parents for letting it happen. Plus I’d feel guilty about it.

Knowing that I have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help him succeed at school, would I be a “bad” parent if I just left him alone about school now and let him deal with the consequences? He’s 12 years old. He’s not a little kid anymore. He does however totally lack motivation and aspirations. I have never met a child that never wanted to be anything when he grew up. He aspires to do nothing. He wants to own a truck with a snow plow so he can plow driveways. That’s it! That is all he wants to do. Of course as a parent I tell him to dream bigger than that and aspire to OWN a landscaping company that gets hired to plow during the Winter and to own his own fleet of trucks. Nope, he doesn’t want to do that. He doesn’t want to do anything.

We’ve had him evaluated. One doctor said he has Aspergers and anxiety. Others have told us he doesn’t. We’ve taken him to a psychologist who doesn’t know how to figure him out. He told us he’s incredibly bright.

Our son also thinks he’s invincible. He thinks he’ll do well at tests even if he doesn’t study just because a couple of times he did do well. He’s also under the impression that he CAN’T fail or be left behind. He said a teacher told the class that. I beg to differ.

What would YOU do? Would you continue to fight what seems like a hopeless battle and keep on him about school work, or do we back off and let him learn from his mistakes and deal with the consequences? If you have gone through a similar experience, what would you recommend?

Thank you in advance. I appreciate your feedback very much.

It’s that time of year again, time to update my site information with a Reader’s Demographics Survey.

What exactly does that mean? That means I need to know a little bit about the people who subscribe or frequent my blog. It helps A LOT to know this information. It helps me to know what kind of information (posts) readers enjoy the most. It also helps when working with companies. Companies (and PR people) like to get an idea of who the target audience is. For example, there is no point in me posting about the lastest developments at NASA if no one is going to be interested in it.

There are only 10 quick questions. Most of them have multiple choice answers so you don’t really need to type in anything unless you want to (there are a few spots for comments). You do not need to give me your name, e-mail or any kind of personal information like that. Basically I just need to know your gender, age, where you live (state) and what types of posts do you like the most. It’s quick and easy and it would really mean a lot to me.

It would mean A LOT to me. ♥

I am also having my site re-designed to help make it much easier to find the posts that interest you the most rather than have to scroll up and down my site looking for things. I am SUPER excited about it! Sadly the person who is going to work his magic on my site broke his finger (and I do mean broke it – ewww!), so he only has one good hand to work with. So it might take a bit longer then expected. However I know my site is going to look AMAZING! I have seen his work. It’s awesome!

I will FINALLY have a dedicated winner’s page. I know that has always been a suggestion of many readers. I WILL have – yeah!

I am also going to work on shortening my posts. I know I tend to write a lot, often too much. Most of my posts are near 1,000 words. Sorry about that. I always think that if I write short posts that I am missing important information. I am going to work on condensing my posts.

I am also considering added information about deals, coupons and/or freebies. I was thinking “Freebie Friday” and share some freebie offers I found on the Internet, and maybe Savings Sunday where I could share deals or coupons that I found on the Internet. Would that interest anyone?

What other things to people like? Photography? Quotes? Humor? Recipes? How To’s, Tips? … ???

I am always open to suggestions. If you have any thoughts on how I can make my site, or the content (posts) better, I would love to hear from you.

Feel free to leave any additional comments that I might not have touched upon here on this post, or you are welcome to e-mail me directly at SheScribes “at” Optonline “dot” net (I wrote my e-mail out so that ‘bots don’t pick up on it).

Thank you for doing this for me. I appreciate it VERY MUCH!!!!

On a side note, if you don’t already follow me on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/SheScribes) or Twitter (www.Twitter.com/She_Scribes) I would very much love it if you could. It also gives me the opportunity to interact with people a lot easier.

My family LOVES noodles. They are incredibly versatile. You can use them as a main dish, as a side dish or even as a snack. Sometimes when my husband is still a big hungry after dinner he’ll make a bowl of noodles and add a little butter to them. Mmm… just thinking about a bowl of noodles sounds good right now.

A quick and tasty noodle option is to pepare the noodles as directed, then top with a slice or two of cheese (or a sprinkling of sheddred cheese). Voila! Instant “mac and cheese”. My kids love it.

I know that noodles are a staple in many homes. That is why I thought many of readers might be interested in this contest that I learned about from Pennsylvania Dutch Noodles.

As the American classic noodle, Pennsylvania Dutch wants to get a glimpse into your favorite noodle moments and wants to know what the idea of “home” means to you.

Home to me is my family (my husband and our children) sitting down for dinner, laughing, joking and telling each other about our day.

The comfort of home means something different to each one of us. That is why Pennsylvania Dutch came up with a special contest called Pasta Moments Photo Contest.

To enter, simply ‘like’ Pennsylvania Dutch Noodles on Facebook, Facebook.com/PennsylvaniaDutchNoodles. Next submit your favorite photo with pasta, including a caption that fills in the blank, “Somewhere in America, home is…”

Have you ever met a couple of people who seem to be the most unlikely friends? For example, a man who lives and breaths health, nutrition and exercise who is best friends with a many whose only form of exercise it pushing the buttons on the remote control from his couch. Or a lady who is totally into fashion, style and beauty best friends with a woman who doesn’t wear a speck of make up and the fanciest hair style she wears is a ponytail.

In honor of the January 31st release of the movie The Big Year, I thought it would be fun to write about some other unlikely friendships. Her is a list the top films in which a couple of opposites become unlikely friends including Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption, Jack Nicholson and Greg Kinnear in As Good as it Gets and “Chunk” and “Sloth” from The Goonies.

Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson portray three men from very different walks of life, facing a mid-life crisis, a work-life crisis and a no-life crisis. In the biggest competition of their lives, they undertake an unforgettable trek through North America, engaging in hilarious and bizarre adventures and forming friendships that will last a lifetime!

The Goonies

In the classic film The Goonies, Chunk and Sloth are literally forced together in a sort of mutual punishment by the demented Fratellis. Initially enemies, Chunk and Sloth quickly become friends over a mutual love of the candy bar Baby Ruth. The horribly deformed Sloth and the funny child Chunk are certainly a strange pair, but they band together to save The Goonies and become unlikely heroes.

Toy Story

In Toy Story, the film that revolutionized both CG animation and children’s films, old cowboy Woody is at odds with the shiny, new space range Buzz Lightyear. Because of Buzz’s delusions that he is an actual space ranger (and not a toy), and the fact that their owner is giving him preference over Woody, Woody plots against Buzz. Following a series of mishaps, Buzz and Woody are forced to work together to escape and return to their owner and, along the way, they become lifelong friends.

As Good As It Gets

In the Academy Award winning film As Good As It Gets, Jack Nicholson stars as Melvin Udall, a germophobic, obsessive-compulsive writer who virtually everyone detests. After Melvin’s neighbor, Simon Bishop, is brutally beaten and hospitalized, Melvin reluctantly agrees to care for Simon’s dog Verdell. Melvin forms an attachment to Verdell and, after a somewhat awkward road trip together, Melvin and Simon become good friends.

Up

Up is the story of Carl Fredricksen, an old man who has lost his wife and is being forced into a retirement home due to urban development. In order to avoid being sent to a home, Carl attaches thousands of balloons to his house and escapes… only to realize that Russell, a young Wilderness Explorer has accidentally stowed away! On their way to Paradise Falls, Carl and Russell form an unusual bond, have an unforgettable adventure and become good friends.

The Shawshank Redemption

In the highly lauded film The Shawshank Redemption, Tim Robbins plays Andy, a banker convicted of killing his wife and her lover under circumstantial evidence. While in prison, Andy befriends Red (Morgan Freeman), who helps him receive contraband items. Over 20 years or so spent in prison, the men form a steadfast bond. After both men flee from the prison (Andy escapes and Red is paroled), they are able to escape to Mexico where they are reunited and start a new life together.

Can you think of any other film where the people you wouldn’t expect end up being the best of friends? Feel free to comment and let me know your thoughts. I think it would be a lot of fun to think of a few others.

As a mom I dread the day that one of my children get behind the wheel of a car. Their safety would be my #1 priority. Of course their safety is always my priority, but thinking about my child behind the wheel of a car and everything that could possibly go wrong actually make me sick to my stomach. Do they REALLY have to drive? Can’t they walk everywhere they have to go? Sigh…

My daughter will be 16 next year. My husband told me IF my car was still in decent shape (I drive a 96′ Mazda) we’d have to see about giving it to her. Knowing that my car has a lot of weird quirks about it, I’m not so sure I like that idea. We’ll see.

I read a blog called MySentimentExactlee. I was reading their most recent post and I was shocked, mortified and TOTALLY disgusted by the service one of the writers, Jackie, received from a popular automotive service center, PepBoys.

I have never been to a PepBoys personally (I don’t think we have one in my area) but I am aware of them and I have seen their commercials.

Jackie gave her teenage son her car. One day he had issues with his brakes so they took the car to their mechanic and had them fixed. Just a couple of months later he had break problems again so they took the car to PepBoys. You will NEVER believe what transpired. Oh my goodness!!! I get SICK just thinking about it.

You can read all about it here, http://mysentimentexactlee.com/2012/01/pepboys-fails-customer-service. There are actually three pages BUT they are SHORT unlike my average blog post. Trust me, it’s a MUST READ.

To move to the next page scroll just below the post (below the add) and you’ll see how to move on to the next page for this post.

After reading this I will NEVER, EVER visit a PepBoys. I also plan on telling family and friends across the country about this incident. Not only is it THE WORST case of customer service I have ever heard of, but they made no effort to do the right thing. A child could have been killed – or worst! Don’t they have ANY remorse for that?

I worked in customer service for many years. I spent seven years working for the phone company and we lived and breathed customer service. I have awards from the company (AT&T) for my outstanding customer service.

I had a home business for many years and customer service is something that I pride myself on. I had many repeat customers because of how well I treated them. Not only that they told others about me. Word of mouth marketing is the best kind.

After reading how PepBoys treated this woman Jackie and her family they get the award for THE WORST customer service EVER! Not only from a local level, but also from their corporate offices.

If you frequent a PepBoys, or are considering it, I suggest you read about Jackie’s experience with them and think twice about it. If it happened to her it could happen to you or someone you love.

Thank God her son is OK. That is the main thing. But still, it makes you wonder about the “What if’s”.

Simply disgusting!
