Did you know that it’s Hispanic Heritage Month? It runs from September 15, 2013 – October 15, 2013.
I visited the National Hispanic Heritage Month website, set up by the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and U.S. National Archives and Records Administration to learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month. I am not Hispanic, but I am interested in other cultures and customs.
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
Diversity on Demand, one of the nation’s top cable companies, has partnered with the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by paying tribute to the powerful and positive influence of Hispanics in America.
To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, consumers are encouraged to visit the Diversity On Demand’s Facebook app, Nada or Aficionado? where they can enter for a chance to win a 32″ smart HDTV and other prizes.
To enter all you need to do is take the fun Hispanic entertainment challenge and see where you stand on a scale of nada to aficionado. It’s really easy. You don’t have to be an expert.
In addition to the contest, cable is shining a spotlight on compelling Hispanic figures and events on cable’s On Demand service. The Hispanic-themed programming represents a broad industry effort to provide digital cable customers convenient access to relevant, factual and entertaining Hispanic and Latino television shows and movies – On Demand all month long.
