Gender Wars: Some Like It Hot – Others Not So Much (giveaway ends 2/9/13)

Do you and your significant other see “eye to eye” when it comes to matters of hot and cold? My husband and I are always at war when it comes to turning up/down the heat or on/off the air conditioner.

I am not a fan of heat. I never have been. I rarely turn the heat on in our home. We live on the top floor condo. Heat rises. So if our neighbors put on their heat eventually our place heats up. We also get direct sunlight for several hours during the day which helps to bring in heat too. In fact many times during the Winter months I have to open up a window just to cool our place down.

During the summer months I am much happier when the AC is on, especially at night when I’m trying to sleep. My husband on the other hand prefers to snuggle up under a comforter – even in the smouldering hot summer months. No way! I don’t want anything touching my skin when it’s hot out, especially a heavy blanket.

My husband is constantly putting the heat on in our home. Take today for example, with the wind chill it feels like -4 degrees outside. Inside is fine, but my husband was cold before he left for work and turned the heat up. Now it’s too warm in here and I have to keep the windows cracked open (with -4 degree temperatures!) just to cool our place down a bit. I think it’s silly to heat up our whole place if we’re all in one room. That is why a space heater is not such a bad idea. It allows you to take the chill off of one room rather then wasted energy warming our entire home.

We have an electric fireplace in the living room that generates heat. In a way that is like a space heater. I think if we didn’t have that we’d probably have one of the more traditional kinds of space heaters – except the ones with the coils that heat up and turn bright orange. With two kids, five cats and a dog that would be dangerous to have in our home. Thankfully more modern space heaters are much safer.

Honeywell, a company that makes air cleaners, humidifiers and thermostat controls, also makes space heaters. They created this interesting “Infographic” that shows how men and women differ when it comes to matters such as heating your home.

Gender Wars_Honeywell Heater Infographic 2

The infographic is a bit hard to read so I cropped it a bit to make it easier to read the contents.

Gender Wars_Honeywell Heater Infographic 3

My responses would be different then the ones in the infographic, but it’s still interesting to know how the majority of people feel. For example, I tend to keep our home cold, just because I function better then I do if it’s hot. Plus when I’m cold I grab a pair of socks and/or slippers first and foremost, then I would move on to layering clothing.

Do you and your significant other battle over the thermostat? Can you relate to this infographic?

  46. Denise Beeman says:

I hate to be cold more than anything, yet we are really tight financially so our house is freezing! My husband allows me to use a personal heater in the bathroom but ours is old and not energy smart. I usually wear my hat and coat in the house.

  47. I have always lived in the South, born and bred, so you know I like it warm all year round. My husband was born/grew up in upstate NY so for him, it isn’t cold until you have to leave the water dripping to keep it from freezing. It’s horrible here. I want the thermostat on about 78 when it’s cold, and he wants it on 62 because it’s shorts and tank top weather until then. I am forever in carhartt socks, hoodie, carhart coat, etc trying to get warm during these cold East Coast temps going on right now

  48. I had brain surgery a few years ago. That changed all my taste & feelings. I am ALWAYS cold. I wear long sleeves in the summer. I try not to use my heat or a/c too often, as I cannot afford the bill. I qould love to win this heater!
    Thank you!

  49. Ray Saunders says:

We like to sleep with the room cold, but with lots of blankets. But you have to get out of bed sometime before Spring…

I’m not comfortable unless it is in the 70;s. So I am always turning the heat up or kicking on a lil heater for extra warmth.

  53. malinda kordell says:

During the summer I can handle the heat, but not so much in the winter….So I am usually the one turning the thermostat up while the hubby turns it down…I’m always cold and he’s always warm. Boy, could I use this heater to keep in whatever room I’m hanging in!!!

  54. Wendy Pesce says:

My hubby likes it colder then I do, but I hate the high electric bill!

  55. YES yes it’s temp wars here!!! I prefer it at 68 and I make hubby just put on more clothes! for sleep, even lower.. HE can’t take it.. but hey we save money too!!! Summers are horrid! HE thinks the a/c should be at 75 and that still is too warm for me!

  56. Well I dont have anyone to fight over the thermostat with but I would love to win because I like to use space heaters in my room instead of using the central heat. I am cold natured ever though I leave in the deep south.

  57. chrissy c says:

I like it warm and my hubby likes it cold!

  58. Victor Galbraith says:

  59. We both like it on the warm side, which means we don’t have any battles, however, we do have an ugly bill every month!

  60. Sandra K321 says:

I usually prefer it cooler than hubby does. Right now since I’m here alone I have the heat set at 66. When he comes home he immediately starts a fire in the wood stove but he doesn’t know how to regulate it well so it goes up to 72 in there. Then if you go to a room where it is cooler you feel cold. Having to wear t-shirts and shirts in the house in the winter is a bit rediculous to me, especially when you have to have a sweater handy to go to the kitchen. We don’t have air-conditioning so we don’t have to fight over that.

  61. I fight over the heat and air with my daughter. My daughter’s bedroom is upstairs so it is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. So a space heater would be great.

  62. Jaque Richards says:

I like it cold but everyone else likes it warm. I do tell them to put on more clothes or grab a cozy throw if they complain about the temperature. 🙂 Thank you.

I’m a follower of all and we try to keep the heat on 68, but my husband likes it at 72, its a war

  64. I have the fan on year round with an average blanket, my hubby right now is sleeping with the down comforter….

  88. hi Kimberly
i agree with you, men feels cold, women are always hot, especially going through hormonal changes.
i am hot all the time and my husband is always cold . My husband is retired and it would be nice for
him the space heater, seeing he is home all day, we cannot afford to heat up the whole place all day
so he is always freezing even though he wears 3-4 layers of clothing

  89. Melissa Hartley says:

Wow I can so relate to this 🙂 I currently live with my brother & mom–my bro loves the heat way up even when he is asleep at night ..which isn’t good for the electric bill! He would have it on 80, 24/7 but at night I turn it down to 75 or 73–we fight constantly over it .. thanks.

  90. I like it cooler but when it gets too cold the heat comes on for a short while

  91. Amanda K. says:

  99. My war: husband keeps it very very cold in the house. We freeze. He has a home office that he has a seperate space heater for. It is soooo warm in there he sits in shorts all day and you can actually feel the heat touching the door from outside. We freeze, he’s warm. THEN on the weekends when he is out of his office, he turns the heat up to an acceptable level in the part of the house he is sitting in watching TV (we have a couple seperate furnaces in the house). Again, we freeze, he’s warm.

  100. Im usually cold but my daughter and boyfriend are both usually hot so I usually just try to wear a sweatshirt.

  101. Joseph Stowell says:

Temperature is relative. If you are running around and doing things, cooler is better; if, however, you are sitting still, watching TV or reading a book, warmer is better. I try to compromize because you can always put more clothes on and wrap in blankets or throws but there is only so much you can take off.

  102. Jennifer R says:

My husband is always hot, I am always cold. I like a space heater on close by most of the time and make my husband crazy.

  103. Robin Pasholk says:

  104. We take turns adding extra clothing or taking it off!

  105. with the cost of oil, we like to keep in low 60s

  106. tracy davis says:

    I love it hot!

  107. We’ve found a compromise…we’re both cheap so we set the thermostat low and layer. I’m a big fan of fuzzy socks and warm blankets.

  108. the heater would be nice for those really chilly nights.

  109. I like it warm during the day and chilly at night. It is just me, my 20 yr old daughter and our 4 fur babies. I try to keep the house on the warmer side for the furbabies. They don’t do cold very well. If it were just me, I would put a blanket around me and call it a day. Unfortunately, we do not have central heat, so maintaining a temp above 65 on days where the outside temp is below 30, is very difficult. I am just very thankful that we haven’t had many of those in the past few years.

  177. We are from Minnesota and my husband loves to keep the temperature down in the winter time! Our bedroom is on the lowest level of the house and is always freezing, so we have a down comforter that we use. The temperature in our room will be in the 50s (rest of the hose in the 60s) and he’ll STILL complain about how warm he is because of the comforter. It’s just funny now that we know we’ll never be able to find a happy medium for either of us. I get the comforter in the winter time, he gets his choice in the summer time – compromise!
