Happy National Ice Cream Day! (July 21, 2013)

 Ice Cream

Did you know that today (July 21, 2013) is National Ice Cream Day? It’s OK if you didn’t know that today was the day to celebrate the cold, yummy treat. July is National Ice Cream month so you still have plenty of time to celebrate. 🙂

According to Wikipedia National Ice Cream month is celebrated every July here in the United States. Former President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream month back in 1984. He also made a Presidential Proclamation that July 15, 1984 was National Ice Cream Day. Even though he only proclaimed that one day back in 84′ as National Ice Cream Day it’s still celebrated on the third Sunday in July.

President Reagan wanted to recognize this popular treat by celebrating it and stated that these two events (National Ice Cream Month and National Ice Cream Day) should be observed with “appropriate ceremonies and activities”.

If you are looking for a way to celebrate today (or this month) you should check out some new flavors from Dreyer’s (West Coast) and Edy’s (East Coast). They are the same company. It just goes by a different name depending on where you live.

I received a few samples to review in honor of National Ice Cream Day/Month.

Best of all each ice cream is under 200 calories (110-120 calories per serving). They also have half the fat of regular ice cream and 1/3 less calories.

The new flavors are;

Dreyers Slow Churned Sunny Salted Caramel Pretzel

Edy’s/Dreyer’s Slow Churned Sunny Salted Caramel PretzelVanilla ice cream with a salted caramel swirl and pretzel pieces.

I was super excited to try this flavor. I love salted caramel (especially caramel with sea salt) and I enjoy pretzels and ice cream. This seemed like a heavenly combination.

I love the creamy vanilla ice cream. It features ribbons of salted caramel and bits of pretzels spread throughout. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and salty and creamy and crunchy. It’s the best of all worlds.

My husband usually liked only vanilla and/or chocolate ice cream, and he’s not a fan of anything crunchy in his ice cream too. He really likes this ice cream. I was surprised he did. My kids love it. My son likes to add a drizzle of chocolate syrup on top of it.

Dreyers Slow Churned German Chocolate Cake Spectacular

Edy’s/Dreyer’s  Slow Churned German Chocolate Cake SpectacularChocolate ice cream with a caramel coconut swirl and brownie pieces.

My first spoonful of this ice cream I thought to myself “This is a nice, rich chocolate ice cream”. With my second spoonful I realized that there was more to it than that. You can really taste the coconut.

I won’t mention the brand but it tastes exactly like a popular chocolate covered coconut bar/candy.

I honestly didn’t taste the caramel in this ice cream, but that is OK with me. It’s still delicious.

There are brownie pieces sprinkled throughout the ice cream. My kids said they wished the pieces were bigger and there were more of them. I thought there was just enough brownie pieces and they were a good size.

Dreyers Slow Churned Take the Cake

Edy’s/Dreyer’s Slow Churned Take the CakeYellow cake flavored light ice cream with a frosting swirl and multi-colored sprinkles.

OH MY GOODNESS!!! You MUST try this ice cream flavor. It really does remind me of a birthday cake and you can take the frosting swirl. It’s like a birthday cake in a bowl!

This flavor is the most popular one with my family because it’s almost already gone. They can’t get enough of this one.

The Birthday Cake flavor is all the rage these days. My husband had some at Stone Cold Creamery and my son had some at Friendly’s. Skip the restaurant and pick up some Take the Cake from Edy’s/Dreyer’s at your local grocery store. Not only that it’s a lot cheaper than getting ice cream at a restaurant and frankly I think the Edy’s/Dreyer’s version is the best (I made sure to sample the ice creams from the restaurants).

All three flavors are a Limited Edition. I really hope that Edy’s/Dreyer’s reconsiders and keeps all three flavors available year round, most especially the Take the Cake flavor.

If you happen to come across them STOCK UP! That is what I plan on doing.

For more information visit www.Edys.com or www.Dreyers.com. You can also find both brands on Facebook.

Edy’s/Dreyer’s are part of the Nestle brand of products.

Be on the look out for another ice cream review of the new Skinny Cow ice cream bars.
