Before you know it, your precious, little child will become a young adult. They will experience many different changes, especially with their bodies. By the time they become interested in dating, it is time to have “the talk”. Although it may be awkward and uncomfortable, this is a necessary conversation. Here are few suggestions for how to approach some of the more delicate topics.
Healthy Relationships
Adolescence can be tough. Your body is telling you that you are ready for all these adult situations, but, mentally and emotionally, you are completely unprepared. Relationships and intimacy are about more than physical contact. Explain to your teen that they should look beyond physical attraction. Ask them what they have in common with their crush? What type of person are they? It may take your teen several years to discover their “match,” but it is not too early to help them distinguish good qualities from bad ones. Don’t be afraid to share some of your personal experiences as well. Tell your teen the story of how you met your partner or describe your first love. They may actually appreciate your honesty.
Rules & Respect
Another essential part of dating is having respect for yourself and your partner. Kids usually model the behavior they see in their environment, but they do not always understand why. Point out the importance of being considerate and listening to each other’s feelings. Share a few examples of how you demonstrate love and respect for your partner. There is never an excuse for disrespect, abuse, or invading someone’s personal space. If they are ready to take their relationship to another level, it is necessary that they make sure their partner is ready for this next step as well. This decision should not be implied. Both parties should be able to clearly state their needs. If this is too uncomfortable, then maybe they are not ready.
Protection & Education
Youth has the ability to trick our minds. It make us feel invincible and willing to take risks. However, there are possible consequences for those in a sexual relationship. Consequences that are hard to consider when you are in the heat of the moment. An unplanned pregnancy can be difficult to manage. There are serious diseases to think about, some that can have a lasting affect. Talk to your teen about contraceptives and sexually transmitted diseases. You could also schedule an appointment with your doctor. Most medical professionals appreciate any opportunity to share helpful, preventive advice.
Every child is unique. There is no specific time for having a conversation about sex and dating. As a parent, it is up to you to decide when the time is right. Also, do not feel pressured to talk about everything all at once. However, this talk is extremely important. It could really prepare them for the emotional bumps and bruises of new relationships. It could also teach them the importance of taking care of their body.
