Do you want to hear some pretty scary statistics? Probably not, but for YOUR health sake, I think you need to know these.

Women account for just over half of the total heart disease deaths in the United States each year, although many women continue to think of heart disease as a man’s disease.

Worldwide, 8.6 million women die from heart disease each year, accounting for a third of all deaths in women.

42% of women who have heart attacks die within 1 year, compared to 24% of men.

Under age 50, women’s heart attacks are twice as likely as men’s to be fatal.

8 million women in the US are currently living with heart disease; 35,000 are under age 65. Four million suffer from angina.

435,000 American women have heart attacks annually; 83,000 are under age 65; 35,000 are under 55.

267,000 women die each year from heart attacks – six times more than the number of women who die from breast cancer.

Although these stats are geared towards women, men need to be concerned about heart disease just as much as women do.

These stats are from the Heart Foundation.

As a woman I find these stats very, very, very alarming and concerning. Especially because I’m obese and I don’t exactly take care of myself like I KNOW I should. I always tend to push these types of facts in the back of my head so I can conveniently forget about them (at least for the time being). When they in front of my face again it scares me to death. I don’t want to get heart disease or have a heart attack. I don’t want to do that to my family. 🙁

I am happy to support campaigns that help to bring awareness to women’s health, especially heart health. And I can’t think of a better way to support women’s heart health then getting all dressed up in a beautiful red dress.


If you read my blog on a regular basis you know that I’m not one to post press releases. But every now and then I feel that the information is too important not to share.

Now through Easter, all 500 Burlington stores will feature a prominent red dress section and for every ladies and girls dress sold, Burlington will donate $1, up to $25,000, to WomenHeart to fund life-saving heart health education.  In addition, customers can help by donating $1 or more at check-out to contribute to WomenHeart’s free education and support services for women living with heart disease.  Burlington will celebrate these customer donations by displaying paper Red Dress icons at check out with the donor’s name.

In the retailer’s inaugural Red Dress Event, it raised close to $1 Million to support WomenHeart and its free education and support services for women living with heart disease.  This fundraising enabled the organization to launch Para la Mujer Hispana, the first national heart health education program for Hispanic-American women. Today, WomenHeart launches its Spanish-language website, and will begin distribution of bi-lingual educational materials within their iconic Red Bag of Courage®.

In addition, any customer who donates $10 or more at these select locations will receive the coveted Red Dress pin, the nationally recognized symbol of heart disease in women, complements of WomenHeart and Burlington.

  210. I was diagnosed with post partum cardiomyopathy in 2007. This is a rare form of heart failure that occurs after the birth of a child but continues for the rest of your life. I had to make drastic changes to my lifestyle and diet. Since I’m in heart failure I can’t exercise because exertion is a no-no. I now follow my doctors orders to the letter and take my meds like clockwork because they are what is keeping me alive.

    I eat a primarily raw vegan whole food diet. All organic and no GMO. Most of our foods are homemade, I also make sure to add a large amount of super foods and a good variety of medicinal foods such as chinese herbs and medicinal plants.
