I’m the parent to young adults. I can’t even say that (or think it) without getting a little misty-eyed. I long for the days when my kids were younger. I miss those years so much. Now both of my kids work, go to college, own their own cars, pay their own bills and have significant others. We rarely ever see out 21 year old daughter anymore. She’s with her boyfriend all the time. She only comes home to do laundry. Sigh…
Just because my kids are young adults doesn’t mean for one moment that we don’t worry about them. Our son is 19 in another month or so and we still have him check in when he’s out and about. We like to know where he is. As for our daughter is older so we can’t force her to do that. We just hope (and pray) that they remember all the safety things we have taught them throughout the years if they ever find themselves in a situation where they feel unsafe.
Our local community college has a self defense class. I told both of my kids that they should take that class. I think it should be mandatory class and not an elective. In fact, I think they should have self defense and safety class in school too. Growing up we had to take home economics classes, so why not have the kids take a class that could potentially save their lives one day? On a side note I think they should bring back home economics too so that kids these days can balance a checkbook and sew a button.
If my kids don’t know self defense moves, I at least want them to have something to protect themselves.
Our daughter is beautiful and guys hit on her all the time. I really rather not have some creep follow her home or attack her in a parking lot. On the flip side, our son’s girlfriend lives in the woods (I’m talking in the middle of no where) and there are bears in that area. I worry about him walking to his car and a bear or rabid animal attacks him.
Ugh! Just thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach.
A company by the name of Sabre offers consumers pepper sprays and other personal safety products.
My #1 concern about giving my kids pepper spray is the legality of it. I wasn’t sure if it was even legal in our state (New York).
Pepper Spray is LEGAL in all 50 states. However, possession and/or use may be regulated or prohibited by law in some jurisdictions. If there are any questions, check with your local police.
It also goes without saying that you should NEVER fool around with it. ONLY use it if you are threatened and/or if you need to protect someone else. Using it improperly can be a violation of the law.
Sabre sent me two pepper spray cases, but not the actual spray. It’s illegal for them to ship the spray to some states, New York being one of them.
For that reason I am unable to test out the sprays. I wasn’t going to spray anyone (obviously). I was going to take it outside and see how easy it was to access it and set it off. Because I don’t have the spray I really can’t do that.
Sabre does carry other safety products including bear sprays and dog sprays. I can’t imagine why anyone would need a dog spray, but I would love it if I could give our son a bear spray JUST IN CASE he ever finds himself face to face with a bear (they are all over the place where we live).
In addition to the sprays, Sabre offers personal alarms that can be carried with you at all time. Some come on key chains, others can be clipped on to your backpack, belt loop or jacket.
Sabre personal alarms are;
- Easy to activate: Simply press button to turn alarm on and off – intuitive design makes it easy even in stressful situations.
- Attention-grabbing: 120 dB alarm audible 600 feet (185 m) away alerts others to your situation – turns bystanders into witnesses and possibly even rescuers.
- Instant access: Clip to clothing, bag, waistband, etc. makes attaching and accessing simple and effective – no fumbling for the alarm or need to carry in your hands.
- And more.
This might be an even better option for my kids.
They range in price from $9.99 to up to $19.99 (that higher price is a pepper spray/alarm combo).
Sabre even offers home security systems, but I don’t know much about that.
In addition to the personal safety products, Sabre has a wealth of information on their site on how to protect yourself, everything from the correct way to use pepper spray to how to fend off a potential bear attack. There is a lot of interesting videos and information to check out.
