Movie Review: Deepwater Horizon

Available today on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra and Digital Download is the docu-drama Deepwater Horizon.

The film stars Mark Walhberg, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez, John Malkovich and Kate Hudson.

Deepwater Horizon was inspired by the true event of the Deepwater Horizon rig that had a serious blow out leaving eleven crew members dead and causing the largest oil spill in U.S. waters.

Some people might recall the massive oil spill that occurred in 2010. Hundreds of thousands of fish, birds and other wildlife were killed as a result and many fishing businesses suffered because they could not fish in the oil filled water.

The film Deepwater Horizon is based on the events from the real life Deepwater Horizon rig.

When the movie starts off we get to know a little bit about some of the key players in this horrific disaster.

We meet Mike William (Wahlberg) and his wife Felicia (Hudson). Together they have a young daughter.

It would appear that the couple is used to Mike’s unusual job and schedule. He spends a few weeks away from his family working on the rig, and a week or two at home before heading back to the rig. The rig is in the middle of the ocean so it’s not like Mike can come home to dinner every night.

We also get to meet one of the newest employees of Deepwater Horizon, young Andrea Fleytas (Rodriguez). She drives a “muscle car” which is clearly very important to her.

Once aboard the rig we are introduced to elder statesmen on the rig, Mr. Jimmy (Russel). We also meet a not-so-nice, sneaky and “all about the money” BP executive Donal Vidrine (Malkovich).

Life aboard the rig seems to be going as usual, but there is concern that corporate cut some corners in hopes of getting everything up and running quickly. For that reason some testing was done to ensure that everything was in working order.

Things seemed to be going OK until mud, water and oil backed up in the pipes, forcing it to explode on to the rig. Employees scrambled to stop the back flow, but they are too late. The debris causes an explosion leaving the Deepwater Horizon a blaze.

Now it’s a race against time and the elements to save the crew of Deepwater Horizon before it’s too late. Stopping the leaking oil is not even an option at this point. People’s lives are in danger.

Who will survive? I can’t ask what happens next because if you are familiar with the real life outcome, you know what happens next.

Look for Deepwater Horizon where ever movies are sold. You can also download it (Digital Download) on iTunes and Google Play.

There are A LOT of bonus features with this film. A vast majority of them pertain to the behind the scenes stuff which I found to be very interesting. They show you how specific scenes were filmed as well as how they created the rig. It looks so real but it’s all just a movie set. I was very impressed.

  • “Beyond the Horizon” Hour-Long Five-Part Series
  • “Captain of the Rig: Peter Berg” Featurette
  • “The Fury of the Rig” Featurette
  • “Deepwater Surveillance” Featurette
  • “Work Like An American” Tributes

  • “The Fury of the Rig” Featurette
  • “Deepwater Surveillance” Featurette
  • “Work Like an American” Tributes

The Fury of the Rig and Deepwater Surveillance are the best bonus features to watch if you want a good look at the behind the scenes stuff. It’s very fascinating and I would recommend watching them – if not all the bonus features.

Most people, myself included, are familiar with the aftermath of the oil spill, but we don’t really know what it was like to be on the rig as it was spitting out oil and a towering inferno. This film gives you a better understanding and appreciation for the events that happened, the heroes and the lives that were lost.

Kudos to John Malkovich for making himself the most unlikable character in the film. Don’t get me wrong – his acting was great. It’s just that his character was a very unlikable person. He was more concerned with the big bucks then the safety of the people on the rig and the rig it’s self.

Mark Walhberg pulled off another great role. I love how Walhberg can play silly characters (The Other Guys) and totally serious ones like in Deepwater Horizon. He’s a very versatile actor.

Overall I was pleased with the film. It had action. It had excitement. It had incredible special effects. It also kept me on the edge of my seat, not knowing if/when anyone was going to get off the rig before it was too late.

I enjoy Mark Wahlberg in movies. Kurt Russell has been killing it in movies lately, anyone else notice how he’s been in so many movies the last couple of years.
