Movie Review: Fifty Shades Darker

Now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download is the sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker.

The film reunites the original stars, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. In addition the film also stars Kim Basinger, Marcia Gay Harden, Rita Ora, Eric Johnson, Bella Heathcote, Luke Grimes, Eloise Mumford and Victor Rasuk.

Fifty Shades Darker picks up where the first movie ended.

Ana and Christian had been broken up. Ana couldn’t deal with Christian’s dominant ways. Ana has also moved on to a new job as the editor at Seattle Independent Publishing.

One evening Ana is surprised to find Christian attending the same event at an art gallery. Christian is thrilled to see Ana and convinces her to have dinner with him.

While at dinner, Christian tells Ana that he is a changed man and he will give control over to Ana if she agrees to go out with him again. Reluctantly, Ana agrees.

Things seem to be going along OK, but there is a bit of jealousy between Christian and Ana’s new boss, Jack. It’s clear that Jack is interested in Ana too.

Another “bump in the road” is former lover of Christian’s, Leila Williams, who is obsessed with Christian and will do anything to break him and Ana up just so she can be with him again. She’s even willing to kill to be with Christian again.

In this film Ana also finally meets the woman who introduced Christian to BDSM, Elena Lincoln. Ana is stunned to find that Christian and Elena are still friends, and even business partners. Elena also has an issue with Ana and wants her to leave Christian alone.

Will all of this pressure from other people force Ana to break it off with Christian? Or will something happen to prove to Ana just how much Christian truly means to her.

There is even a marriage proposal, but who proposes to who and what is their response? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Fifty Shades Darker. Look for it where ever movie are sold.

There are plenty of bonus features with the Blu-ray/DVD version of the film including a sneak peak at the final installment to the franchise, Fifty Shades Freed (I won’t give away any of that – you’l have to see it for yourself).

Bonus features include;

  • A Darker Direction – Director James Foley explains how his vision had to meet with fans’ expectations.
  • New Threats – An introduction to some new, dark and threatening characters, including Jack Hyde, Leila and, of course, Elena Lincoln – aka Mrs. Robinson!
  • The Masquerade – This featurette about one of the film’s most iconic scenes — the masquerade benefit event at Grey Mansion — explores the production design and costumes and goes behind-the-scenes with the filmmakers and main cast members.
  • Intimate With Darker – An intense look and discussion about the intimate, sensual and provocative world of Fifty Shades Darker, including a visit to the Red Room and, of course, the new “toys!”

  • Deleted Scenes
  • A Tease to Fifty Shades Freed – A tease to the next Fifty Shades film.
  • Writing Darker  – Author E.L. James and screenwriter Niall Leonard trace back the history of the book and introduce viewers to the much darker story and its adaptation to the big screen.
  • Dark Reunion – The filmmakers and cast members discuss being reunited for this second film, and where we find Ana, Christian and their friends.

I normally watch the bonus features, but this time around I watched the digital version of the film on my laptop and I didn’t get a chance to see the bonus features (yet).

In case you are wondering, yes, there is a lot of sex in this film, just as much as the original. There is a lot of BDSM going on in this film just like it was in it’s predecessor.

I’m NOT a “prude” in any way, but I think they could have done these films just as well without all the sex scenes. I realize it’s part of the story, but, they could have cut them down a bit. I am more interested in Christian’s backstory and his relationship with Ana then what sex toy or position he’s going to utilize.

Unlike the original film, this film is much darker, and I don’t mean that in a sexual way. I am referring to Christian’s relationships with Elena and Leila, and Jack’s obsession with Ana.

I found the story in Fifty Shades Darker to be more interesting than Fifty Shades of Grey. There was a lot more substance in the second film then in the first film. Another words there was more of a story line, and a more interesting one, in the second film. The first film focused more so on Christian wooing Ana and their sex life. At least the second film didn’t put as much focus on their sex life.

I can’t wait to see the final film, Fifty Shades Freed, to see what happens with Christian and Ana. I have never read any of the books, so I honestly have no clue if their relationship will last, or will someone come between them.

Below is the theatrical trailer for Fifty Shades Darker. The film is now available for home viewing.
