One of the reasons why I like living in New York is because we don’t necessarily have to worry about things like earthquakes (although we do get small ones from time to time), tornados (rarely) and volcanos (like what happened to Mt. Saint Helens a couple of decades ago.
I often worry about my father and stepmother when they go to Hawaii. I wonder what evacuation plans they have in place in case one of the volcanoes erupt. After all the entire chain of Hawaiian islands were created by volcanos.
Last year I was invited on a press trip to Italy. One place I wanted to be sure to stop and see was Pompeii. The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius has always fascinated me, even as a young girl. Of course I also worried about what would happen if the volcano erupted while I was there. Yikes! That is pretty scary.
There is a movie that is currently available on DVD called Super Eruption. It’s about a volcanic eruption of catastrophic proportions in Yellowstone National Park. I’ve always found disaster movies likes Volcano, 2012, The Day After Tomorrow and Dante’s Peak interesting (and scary if they were real). I figured Super Eruption would be along those lines so I wanted to see it. I was sent a screener copy to review.
Super Eruption stars Richard Burgi (Desperate Housewives, One Tree Hill, Body of Proof) as Charlie Young – a former military man who now works as a park ranger in Yellowstone National Park. Juliet Aubrey (The White Queen, Primeval, The Constant Gardener) plays Kate, a scientist who works at the park.
Kate is concerned about volcanic activity in the park. No one is taking her concerns seriously, that is until volcanic activity starts happening around the park, such as water turning boiling hot and burning park visitors and fire shooting from the ground like a geyser. It’s not until the lava appears that anyone takes Kate seriously. But by now it’s too late. People are trapped in the park and need to be rescued. And the impending explosion would be so severe that it would literally destroy the United States.
Now it’s a race against the clock. Kate needs to find a way to stop the eruption and Charlie needs to rescue those trapped in the park, including his daughter Claire.
Will Charlie find a way to save the guests stuck in the park before it’s too late? Will Charlie himself be able to survive? What about Kate? Will Kate find a way of stopping catastrophic “super eruption” from happening? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Super Eruption, available TODAY (August 20, 2013) on DVD where ever movies are sold.
Super Eruption is a made for TV movie that was released in 2011. I am not 100% sure but it looks like a movie you would find on the Syfy Channel. It’s a bit campy and the special effects are far from top notch. It’s not bad like Sharknado (I don’t think anything is THAT bad) but it’s far from an Academy Award winning film too. The special effects leave a lot to be desired and the story seemed to drag. The film is about two hours long but they could have cut out at least a half hour of content and they still could have done a good job telling the story.
What turned me off is that in the film Kate has conversation with herself online. The Kate she talks to is in the future and in another dimension. That is what threw me off about this film. The whole idea is so far fetched and peculiar and certainly does not tie in with the rest of the film. I think if they would have removed that part of the film the film would have flowed a lot better. The scenes where her future self is telling her current self what she needs to do to try and stop the Yellowstone from erupting was rather silly.
The whole idea of Yellowstone National Park erupting is certainly scary. Most of the park DOES rest on top of a “sleeping” volcano. Although there is no evidence of anything happening with it any time soon, it is possible that it can erupt in the future. Hopefully that doesn’t happen in our lifetime. That would result in possibly hundreds, if not thousands, of fatalities if that happened.
If you are into kitschy movies (the kind they normally show on Syfy) then you should enjoy Super Volcano. It’s by no means an award winning film, but it does have the ability to entertain for a bit and provide you with “food for thought” – what if Yellowstone erupted?
Look for Super Eruption where ever movies are sold.

I do worry about earthquakes all the time living in California. Bad things happen everywhere so you do the best you can I think!

That’s so cool that you got to visit Pompeii! My husband and I went to Rome last summer but didn’t make it over there unfortunately. 🙁
