Movie Review: The Colony

The Colony

Available today on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download is the futuristic Horror/Sci-Fi thriller The Colony.

The Colony stars Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), Bill Paxton (Aliens) and Kevin Zegers (Dawn of the Dead). It was directed by Jeff Renfroe and written by Patrick Tarr (American Psycho), Pascal Trottier (Blind Fear) and Svet Rouskov (Silent Cargo).

Earth is engulfed in an endless winter. There are no blue skies, fields of green grass or farms to grow food. Earth is covered in snow and skin piercing freezing wind.

If you have ever seen the film Day After Tomorrow (Jake Gyllenhaal, Emily Rossum and Dennis Quaid), it’s similar to what happened in that film – where most of the Earth was swallowed up by a vicious snowstorm. Except in this film this is the new way of life.

The only survivors reside inside underground outposts known as colonies. The colonists are trying to find a way to bring life back to the planet, harvesting seeds and even trying to alter the weather.

Living underground is apparently getting to some of the survivors. Mason (Paxton) is even a bit “trigger happy” – killing anyone he feels is not pulling their weight or who he thinks might be cracking under the pressure. Leader Briggs (Fishburne) is doing the best he can under the circumstances.

One day a distress call comes from a nearby colony. Mason thinks it’s not worth the time, effort and resources to help them out. Briggs and Sam (Zegers) feel it’s their duty to check it out and help them. They take off across the unforgiving landscape to find out what is going on in the other colony.

What they find at the other colony is no longer human. They find cannibalistic beings who annihilated the entire colony.

The Colony Briggs and Sam

If you have ever seen the film 30 Days of Night it kind of reminds me of the vampire-like beings in that film, although the people in The Colony are not vampires. They are crazed cannibals lead by a particularly nasty leader.

Some how Briggs and Sam are able to escape with their lives, but not for long. The cannibalistic beings are closing in on them – chasing them across the barren wasteland that was once our beautiful, green Earth. If these beings make it back to their colony they will kill them all off just like they did the other colony.

Can Briggs and Sam stop them before the cannibals make their way to their colony? If they find their way there, what will become of the survivors?

To find out you need to pick up a copy of The Colony, now available today where ever movies are sold.

This film had a limited run in theaters. I don’t know why. I think this film is good enough to have had a bigger release. I consider this film a “hidden gem”. The Colony is one of those films. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the film is. It’s got action, suspense, horror, gore, romance (to some degree) and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

There is some blood and gore in the film, but it’s not that bad. If blood and seeing people get decapitated make you queasy you might want to look away during those scenes.

I really enjoyed the film. It kept me thoroughly entertained from start to finish. The scenes with the cannibals trying to get into the colony were especially suspenseful.

Here is the film’s trailer. The ad that appears on top will disappear after a few seconds (sorry, it’s one of the few trailers I could find on YouTube).
