Movie Review: Wedding Palace – in select theaters & VOD

Wedding Palace

In theaters and on VOD (Video on Demand) today (September 27, 2013) is a new romantic comedy called Wedding Palace. It’s also the first Asian- American “rom com” (romantic comedy).

Jason (Brian Tee) is a young business man with a rather crazy family. They whole heartedly believe in a family curse that will kill Jason if he doesn’t get married before his 30th birthday. Jason is not too concerned because he is about to marry the love of his life Jinnie. That is until Jinnie leaves him at the alter on their wedding day.

Jason’s parents are determined to find his a suitable wife before his 30th birthday, which is fast approaching. They even go so far as to bring Jason on to a dating television show.

On a business trip to Seoul, Korea, Jason meets a young woman name Na Young. The pair instantly hit it off. You can tell that they have chemistry.

The pair spend one night together, driving around Seoul and talking. Sadly Jason has to return to Los Angeles the next day, but he promises to keep in touch.

For the next few months Jason and Na Young talk on the phone and video chat online. They even go so far as to have romantic dinner dates via video chatting.

Jason is head over heels in love with Na Young and asks her to marry him. She gladly accepts and the pair arrange for Na Young to come to the United States to meet Jason’s family and get married.

Jason’s family is thrilled that he will be married before his 30th birthday and break the curse.

Wedding Palace Family

There is one thing that Na Young neglects to tell Jason which is obvious the moment they meet at the airport. Things get even more out of hand when Jason’s parent’s discover her “quirk” too. To make matters worse Jason’s ex-finance Jinnie wants back in Jason’s life.

What ensues is a lot of ups, downs and sheer silliness.

Will Jason ever make it to the alter before his 30th birthday? Will the curse ever be broken? To find out you need to see Wedding Palace, now in select theaters, or on VOD.

This movie is very much a romantic comedy. You find yourself rooting for Jason – hoping he’ll wed before his 30th birthday.

This film is also a comedy. While it wasn’t funny the entire time there were several laugh-out-loud moments.

Jason’s family steals the show. They really stand out. I think Jason’s family were a riot. Even when things get serious with Jason and Na Young, Jason’s family still makes you laugh. Especially when his grandmother tries to catch a ride to the wedding from the hospital.

The film also has some animation and sub-titles. I’m not a fan of movies with sub-titles but to be honest with you there were not that many. Most of the film is in English.

Wedding Palace is an entertaining film that is sure to make you laugh. It does have some slow parts and not-so-funny scenes, but over all it was enjoyable. It is filled with a lot of clichés and stereotypes, but nothing that I would consider offensive.

I am not sure of the rating. If I had to rate it myself I would say it was PG-13. There are only a few sexual innuendos. There is no nudity or foul language the I can recall.
