Oatmeal + Milk = A winning combination #BetterTogether (giveaway ends 11/7/13)

Quaker-Better Together2

I love this time of year. I sleep so much better when the nights are crisp and chilly. I love the beautiful colors of the autumn leaves. I also love that it’s the start to the holiday season (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas…). To be honest with you I love the fashions of the fall season – pants, jackets and sweaters. I’m not a “short and tank” kind of girl. I feel much more comfortable in pants and a sweatshirt.

With the changing of the season our food choices also change. My family swaps out ice tea for hot cocoa and salads for hearty stews.

Another food my family tends to eat a lot more of in the cooler weather is oatmeal. Don’t get me wrong, oatmeal is great year round. It just seems like we tend to consume more of it when the weather is chilly. I guess it’s because a piping hot bowl of oatmeal is a delicious way to start your day and to warm you up from the inside out.

I do admit that we sometimes grab for instant oatmeal. That is OK, but the best kind of oatmeal is the kind you make from “scratch” (so to speak) with oats an milk.

I like to use Quaker Oats. I love that it’s available in a tall container so that you can make many bowls of oatmeal with it or use the oatmeal in yummy recipes.

Most of the time people make oatmeal with water, which is fine. But did you know you can make it with milk too? Not only does milk make the oatmeal creamy and more flavorful, but it also provides you with more vitamins and nutrients. Oatmeal is a great source of fiber and iron. When made with milk it also provides you with protein, potassium and vitamins A, B12 and D.

We always use 2% milk. I’m sure preparing Quaker Oats with any other type of milk would work just fine.

Quaker Oats and Milk #BetterTogether

If you prefer to make your Quaker Oats the old fashioned way with water you can also add milk as your morning beverage so that you are still getting the nutrients from the milk.

What I love about Quaker Oats is that making your own oatmeal allows you to customize it any way you want. You can have it every day of the week and never have the same flavor twice (unless you want to). We like to sweeten the oatmeal with a touch of sugar or honey. Sometimes its great “as is” and other times we like to add chopped up apples and walnuts, cranberries, blueberries, bananas, cinnamon and even applesauce. The toppings and mix-in options are endless. You can even toss in a few chocolate chips if you wanted to (mmm… that sounds good).

Quaker Oats and milk go great together, not only for breakfast but also in recipes. You can enjoy this combination for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and dessert.

Here are a few recipes that you might enjoy that uses both Quaker Oats and milk.

Baked Autumn Apple Oatmeal with Raisins

Pumpkin Oat Streusel Muffins

Cinnamon Bun Scones

Lemon Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins

Banana Bread Oatmeal

Autumn Fruit Cobbler

I was searching for a recipe that my kids could make on their own and that they would enjoy. I came across this recipe.

Chocolate-Hazelnut Oatmeal Refrigerator Cookies

Chocolate-Hazelnut Oatmeal Refrigerator Cookies

  • 2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) of 65% vegetable oil spread
  • 1/2 cup of milk (we used 2%)
  • 1 cup of chopped hazelnuts
  • 2/3 cup of chocolate-hazelnut spread (we used Nutella)
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 3 cups of Quaker Oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
All the ingredients cooked and mixed together. Mmm... just hand me a spoon!

All the ingredients cooked and mixed together. Mmm… just hand me a spoon!

  1. Line 3 cookie sheets with wax paper and set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan combine sugar, cocoa powder, spread and milk. Cook and stir over medium heat until the mixture comes to a full boil. Continue to boil for one minute without stirring. Remove pan from heat. Immediately add the remaining ingredients. Mix well.
  3. Working quickly, drop mixture by rounded measuring tablespoonful onto the cookie sheets. Refrigerate until well chilled. Transfer to an air tight container, separating layers with waxed paper. Store in the refrigerator.
I told my kids use spoons to make them small. Not my kids. They made giant mounds. LOL!

I told my kids use spoons to make them small. Not my kids. They made giant mounds. LOL!

This recipe sounded easy. I knew it was something my 14 year old and 16 year old could make with minimal (or no) supervision.

The kids did well with the recipe. The only thing that gave me cause for concern is that they added the vegetable oil spread into the pan with the other ingredients. They misunderstood which spread to put into the pan to cook. I am not sure if it’s the reason why the cookies came out a bit sticky.

I also suggested that the kids use SMALL spoonfuls of the mixture on the cookie sheets. Instead they did GIANT SCOOPS. I suppose it’s OK but it took forever for them to cool down. They also broke apart when we tried to remove them from the wax paper. I think it they were smaller as the recipe suggests they would have been easier to get off the wax paper.

None the less they turned out great. My kids were thrilled with their creation. They were even coming up with other mix in ideas including peanuts, walnuts and sunflower seeds. All of them sound great to me.

What I love about this recipe is that it was easy to make and my kids had fun with it. I also like knowing that it’s a great way to get some oats into their diet and milk. I just have to find a way to minimize the sugar used in the recipe. I’d like something with less sugar. I’m thinking with the Nutella you wouldn’t need much sugar. We’ll have to play around with it some more.
