I have a confession to make – I have not done many “girly” things. I have never had a manicure. I have never had pedicure. I have never waxed anything and I’ve never done my eyebrows except to pluck a stray hair here and there. No… I don’t look like a hairy gorilla. My eye brows have always been sparse, I shave my legs and under my arms, I’m embarrassed by my toes (s0 a pedicure is out of the question) and my one and only vice in this world is biting my nails, so a manicure is out of the question too.
I was asked about a month ago to review the Philips Satin Perfect Epilator. To be quite honest with you I had no idea what an epilator was. I knew it had something to do with hair removal, but I wasn’t really sure how to worked. Being the curious person that I am I was happy to review the product.
The Philips Satin Perfect Epilator is a small, handheld device that you use on your body to remove unwanted hair. It’s innovative hair removal process pulls hair out by the root without irritating or pulling the skin, or even cutting yourself. The result will leave your skin silky smooth for weeks.
I for one hate to shave. I do it because I have to, but I certainly wouldn’t do it if there was a way around it. Shaving is time consuming, especially when you have to do it daily or at least every other day. It can also be painful (I have cut myself more times then I can count!). Shaving is also expensive. You have to constantly replace razors because they go dull so quickly. Some razors are $$$. Disposable ones are more affordable but have to be replaced all the time. There is no way to win. You either pay a small fortune to replace razor blade or the disposables. Ugh!
I know some people swear by waxing, but the idea of someone pulling those strips off my skin sounds painful. Sometimes just ripping a band aid off a boo-boo is painful enough, let alone your hair. Waxing is also messy and terribly inconvenient.
The Philips Satin Perfect Epilator was made for at-home use and for your convenience. It’s not messy like waxing and a lot less expensive then replacing razors all the time. The results also last longer than shaving.
The device is small and unassuming. It fits perfectly inside your hand. It looks cute and harmless. That is until you turn it out. Oh my! The epilator is very loud. I didn’t expect it to be so loud. When you first use it the sound can make you fearful. Once you’ve used it a few times you don’t even notice the sound anymore.
I will be honest with you and say the first few times I tried it out it hurt. It reminds me of a lawnmower – but for your body. Instead of cutting the hair the epilator pulls the hair out. It gets caught up in the ceramic discs and yanked out instantly.
The best way to describe the feeling is that it feels like small electrical shocks. Kind of like you are using a Taser on your skin. I know, that doesn’t sound too comforting. But it does get better. The more you use it the more accustomed you get to the feeling and after a few times it really doesn’t feel that bad anymore. REALLY!
You can use it to do both of your legs, or do what I did and try it out on different sections of your legs until you get used to the feeling. Now I could easily do both legs in their entirety with no problem. The epilator is great for touch ups too (sometimes hair in some spots seems to grow in faster than others).
Once you have removed the hair your skin really does feel silky smooth. I apply a lotion after using the epilator to help sooth the area too.
I was pleasantly surprised just how long it took before the hair grew back. It was hard for me to make note of it because I would do small areas at a time until I got used to it, so some areas grew in before others did. I know it took a long time to grow back. When I shave I notice stubble the very next day. I did not have that happen with the epilator.
The Philips Satin Perfect Epilator is light weight, fits well in your hand and is cordless. I love the cordless feature. It gives you more freedom when doing your legs (no cord to get in the way). The unit is also rechargeable. Mine arrived with a charge and I have yet to recharge it and I’ve used it many times already.
The unit comes with a small brush to help you keep it clean. The brush is helpful for getting out the little hairs that get stuck between the rotating blades. It’s kind of gross too because you can see the root end of the hairs.
When using the epilator your skin must be dry. I would also recommend letting your hair grow out a few days before using it. I waited about a week without shaving before I used it for the first time. I also have very light hair so you wouldn’t even notice that I didn’t shave my legs (thankfully!).
Your skin might be a bit red and tingly for a while after using the device but it eventually goes away. I heard from others that is common after waxing too. Unlike waxing the epilator doesn’t require any messy wax and the device only pulls out the hair, it doesn’t stick to your skin like wax would do. I want to lose unwanted hair – not healthy layers of skin. Ha Ha.
Now that I am used to the epilator I’ll never go back to shaving my legs. The only thing I’ll shave is my underarms. I think that area might be a wee bit too sensitive for the epilator. Shaving under my arms is certainly a lot less time consuming then my legs.
The only “negatives” I can think of is that it’s painful at first (until you get used to it). I also don’t like that the hair that gets pulled out just falls anywhere. There isn’t a receptical on the unit to collect the hair that is yanked out. Instead it’s either stuck inside the epilator or it’s finds it’s way all over the floor.
I forgot to mention that is also comes with a case to keep the device and accessories all in one place.
The Philips Satin Perfect Epilator retails for around $100. There is also a special packaging that includes other gadgets that doesn’t come with the basic until. That retails for a bit more. You can find this epilator at many retail locations. There is also a store locator on the Philips website.
For more information about the Satin Perfect Epilator visit the Philips website. You can also find the brand on Facebook and Twitter.
