Football is back! For die hard football fans it’s been a very long wait. My husband has been counting the days the same way a child would count the days leading up to Christmas. LOL!
Football is one of those sports where people love to come together and enjoy a game (or two) with family and friends. What makes it even better is the food. It’s not a football game or a tailgating party without some delicious foods.
Some people enjoy going all out with burgers, hot dogs and wings. Others prefer to offer their guests lighter fare like chips, dips, pizza and snack foods.
Usually when people come to our house to watch a game I like to keep it simple with snack foods. If it was a big game, like the playoffs or the Super Bowl I would opt for more “meal like” foods (burgers, hot dogs…).
My husband loves to snack when we’re watching football. Football and food go hand-in-hand. Its funny because when football is not on he doesn’t usually snack watching television. The moment football season kicks in he’s always looking for something yummy to nosh on while he’s watching the games (I say “games” because we have the DirecTV Sunday Ticket so he can watch ALL of the NFL games – lucky me! Ha Ha).
One of our favorite “go-to” snacks is Chex Mix. What I like about Chex Mix is that it’s a combination of favors and textures including corn Chex cereal, wheat Chex creal, mini breadsticks, rye chips and pretzels. It’s like several snacks in one.
Did you know that Chex Mix comes in other varieties too like Cheddar, Bold Party Blend, Hot and Spicy, Trail Mix, Sour Cream and Onion, Honey Nut, Dark Chocolate and one personal favorite, Chocolate Peanut Butter.
My family also enjoys Chex cereals (my kids are crazy for Vanilla Chex).
Did you know you can make a lot of recipes using Chex Mix products?
My kids especially love it when I make Muddy Buddies. Or shall I say “Messy Buddies” since we end up getting powdered sugar all over the place. But I don’t mind – I love making them and eating them. Thankfully Chex Mix makes pre-made Muddy Buddies, however I do enjoy making them myself too.
Muddy Buddies might be a bit messy for watching football, but are many other great recipe ideas would go great with a football game. Here are just a few ideas.
Bacon Blooming Onion – Because who doesn’t love bacon?
Kentucky Bourbon Bacon– Americans are buying more bourbon now than ever before so the trendy flavor is sure to be a hit.
Seattle Grunge– Celebrate the love of the game and NFL season kick-off by commemorating the 2014 Super Bowl Champions!
I made the Seattle Grunge recipe (pictured above) for my family. Not only is it great for snacking on during a football game it also makes a great any time snack and school lunch/after school snack. It’s made with dried blueberries, dried apples, oats and honey granola, sunflower seeds and of course Chex Mix (in this case it’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Chex Mix). It’s so good! I’ve taken some to work with me to snack on too. The sweet and tart flavor from the fruit goes very well with the chocolate and peanut butter.
If you really want to go all out why not try and recreate the Chex Mix Snackadium. This would be PERFECT for a Super Bowl party.
One day I would love to try and make something like this. Of course I’d probably be too tempted to eat it as I was assembling it.
