Sargento “Mini Meals” (Giveaway)

Right now, as I type this, I can’t help but think of food.It’s been a long time since I had breakfast and right now I’m starving. I am very tempted to go into the fridge and eat everything in sight!

Allowing yourself to become THAT hungry in between meals is not a good idea. When you are that hungry you tend to eat whatever you can find, whether it’s healthy for you or not. It’s times like these that people tend to hit up the vending machine or grab the nearest muchy then can find.

It has been said time and time again that instead of eating three large meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) that you should opt for 5-6 smaller meals spread out through the course of the day. Not only does that keep you from getting so hungry that you eat whatever you can find (almost always not-good-for-you foods), or get so ravenous that you eat more then you should, but it also helps to keep your blood sugar at decent levels. I can also provide you with enough NATURAL energy to get you through your day rather then rely on coffee or energy drinks. When you body has enough “fuel” in it’s system (healthy foods) it gives you the energy to get through your day with no slumps.

Coming up with a half dozen “mini meals” to eat throughout the day is not as hard as it might sound. The most important thing you want to aim for is having something that is rich in protein like poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds, legumes and dairy/cheese. Examples of mini meals could be a Sargento string cheese and a pear (the pear is also a fiber as well as a fruit), a hard boiled egg and a slice of whole wheat toast, 7 Sargento Mild Cheddar cheese cubes and a handful of baby carrots, or a grilled chicken breast and a side salad.

Sargento has teamed up with dietitian Elizabeth Ward to help consumers learn more about mini meals as well as offer some meal suggestions.

Here are a few tips from Elizabeth Ward, including some tasty mini meal options.

Say Goodbye to Snacking Guilt:

There’s no need to feel guilty about snackingFrequent mini-meals may actually prevent cravings and binges, and help keep your energy level stable.   

For your morning or afternoon fix, try pairing a Sargento Reduced Fat Colby Jack Stick with carrots or celery sticks for an energy and protein-filled bite.

Learn to Listen:

It’s important to snack throughout the day, but be intuitive and wait until your body tells you it’s time to eat.  If you feel hungry soon after a meal, wait a few minutes, or drink a glass of ice water first to make sure it’s not a false alarm. If you’re still hungry 20 minutes later, it’s truly time for a mini-meal.

If it’s definitely time for a snack, hummus with mini pretzels, cherry tomatoes, or sliced red bell pepper makes for a delicious, filling mini-meal with varying textures.

Make it Count:

Make the most of mini-meals. Since you’re eating more often, make sure snacks fit into your daily calorie allowance, and include calcium, vitamin D, potassium and dietary fiber, nutrients that are lacking in our diets, according to 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

For a refreshing smoothie rich in calcium, potassium, and fiber, blend a frozen banana with a cup of low-fat skim milk. Pump it with even more protein and flavor by adding a tablespoon of peanut butter. 

Switch It Up:

Successful snackers know that variety is key to healthy eating. Keep mini-meals interesting by switching up your snacks. Blend different flavors and textures to please your palate.

To spice up snack time, make your own cheese and vegetable kabob.  Try alternating cherry tomatoes with cubes of your favorite Sargento cheese stick on a skewer.

Cheese is such a great mini meal and snack option because it provides you with both protein and dairy. It’s also so versatile and you can incorporate it into so many different recipes. Because there are so many varieties of cheeses available the possibilities are endless.

  68. My favorite mini meal is to slice up a peeled apple and dip each slice into peanut butter. It fills you up quickly taste great and is diabetic friendly to boot.   136. For my “mini meal” I make a simple “skinny” tuna salad made with canned albacore tuna, chopped onions and plum tomatoes, lemon juice, and salt & pepper. I like to serve this on whole wheat ritz crackers. Yumm!
