Save Time Cleaning Floors with iRobot’s innovative floor scrubbing robot, Scooba 450

Cleaning 3

I will be the first person to tell you that I hate to clean. It’s not that I don’t love having a squeaky clean home – I do! – it’s just that I hate all the work that is involved getting it to that point.

I don’t mind dusting (depending on what room it is). What I dislike the most is vacuuming, mopping the floors and cleaning the bathroom.

If we ever won the lottery we would continue to live a modest lifestyle. The only splurge I would go for (aside from a house, new car and a trip to Disney World) is to hire a weekly cleaning service.

I am always on the lookout for products that would help make cleaning quicker and easier. The less time I need to spend cleaning the better.

A few months ago I reviewed a robotic vacuum which I still enjoy to this day (it’s on temporary loan to a family member so she can try it out and consider if she wants to buy one or not). Did you know that there is also a robotic device that cleans and “mops” floors?

iRobot recently introduced the Scooba 450. The Scooba 450 works on any surface where you would normally use a mop and a bucket – tile, marble, slate, stone, vinyl, linoleum and/or sealed hardwood floors.

We have laminate flooring in the kitchen, hallway and dining room and tile in the bathroom.

The Scooba 450 works on large and small sized rooms (all of our rooms are small).

Scooba 450 cleans your floors using a three step process.

  • Sweep and Pre-Soak: Prepares the floor by sweeping up loose dirt and debris and laying down a thin sheen cleaning solution to pre-soak and loosen messes. No sweeping prep required.
  • Scrub and Squeegee-Vacuum: A powerful scrubbing brush spins at more than 600 RPM to remove messes as the squeegee-vacuum lifts the dirty liquid off the floor.
  • Squeegee-Finish: Ends with a final squeegee-finish cycle so all that is left is a clean floor.

I do vacuum quickly before using the Scooba 450 only because we have five cats and a dog and there is a lot of kitty litter and “tumbleweeds” (aka piles of hair) all around the floor. I don’t want to risk anything getting stuck or twisted in the moving parts on the Scooba 450. For homes with less pets or no pets you wouldn’t need to do this step. I probably don’t either but I feel better doing it just in case.

The Scooba is fairly simple to set up and use. It does take about 8 hours to get a full charge. I charged mine overnight so that it was ready to go the next morning.

Set up is easy enough. Simply remove the part of the Scooba that you need to fill with water and cleaner, snap it back on, let the Scooba know what size room you are cleaning and let it go. The Scooba 450 takes care of the rest. You literally set it down and let it go. There is no need to press additional buttons or time it.

I do check on mine from time to time only because we have pets and the pets find the Scooba amusing and I don’t want any of them to throw it off track. I also like to make sure it doesn’t get caught up on anything. So far, so good. That has not happened.

Here is a brief video of Scooba 450 in action in my kitchen.

You can see one of my cats trying to get close to it. For some reason my cats are entertained by this.

It’s hard to tell from the video but the floor is wet. If I recall correctly at this point of the video it was sweeping the floor and laying down a coating of solution.

My kitchen floor looks like tile but it’s really a wood laminate (I LOVE my kitchen floor).

I will admit that I wasn’t sure how well it would really clean the floors, especially the kitchen floor which sees the most footwork from my entire family. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it cleaned. It even took care of a sticky area where my son spilled orange juice and although I cleaned the area it was still a bit sticky. The Scooba was able to scrub the stickiness away.

It takes about 20 minutes to clean the dining room and kitchen. I haven’t used the device in the bathroom or hallway yet because those areas are very small and I can mop them in less time it takes to fill the Scooba tank up. I prefer to use the Scooba for the larger rooms.

Large room should take around 40 minutes to complete.

There are two tanks in the Scooba – one for clean water and one for dirty water. That way you don’t have to worry about the device spitting dirty water back on to your floors.

The Scooba 450 doesn’t have a docking station. You need to manually plug it in to charge (charging plugs are included). It takes a couple of hours to re-charge after doing one floor (not as much time as it does for the initial first charge).

There is a “dock” of sorts that you can buy separately which you can house your Scooba on. It is also supposed to help it dry out faster. I never really checked to see if that was true or not. I just like using the dock so that I can tuck the Scooba in a corner when not in use.

Speaking of corners, due to it’s large round shape the Scooba 450 cannot clean corners. It does try but it’s not possible due to it’s shape. You might have to clean/mop the corners on your home if you feel they are dirty.

iRobot Scooba 450

The device came with a concentrated cleaning solution. You are welcome to use that or just clean water to clean your floors. IRobot does sell the solution on their site (or at iRobot retailers) A 16 ounce bottle will cost $12.99. I am not sure if you can use other solutions. I would recommend calling iRobot if you wanted to use another cleaner just to make sure it won’t interfere with the device.

Overall I like the product. I think it does a great job keeping the floors clean. You can seven see the difference in the water when you drain out the dirty water. I think it does a better job than mopping.

The product is a bit pricey but I suppose it will pay for it’s self over time because it takes care of cleaning the floors saving you energy and time. You can set the Scooba to clean your room while you take care of other things.

I wish it had a charging station and it would be nice if you could schedule the device to clean at a specific time/date. That would be handy.

I wish there was a way it could get into corners. Maybe one day iRobot can create a square version of the Scooba 450. That would be awesome!

If you are like me and you can’t stand cleaning, or if you are looking for ways to making cleaning quicker and easier, I would recommend checking out the Scooba 450.

For more information visit the iRobot website. There you’ll find more information about the product and see it in action. The device retails for $599 on their website (I’m not sure if iRobot retailers would sell it for more or less). The drying station retails for $79.99 and is also available on the website.

What do you think about the iRobot Scooba 450? Is it something you would like to use in your home? Feel free to share your thoughts. I always love to hear from readers.
