I giggle when I think about how popular Shark Week has become over the years. Sharks are often the subject of nightmares, yet so many people find themselves glued to the TV during Shark Week to watch everything and anything there is to see or know about sharks.
It seems like Shark Week almost has a cult-like following. 🙂
If you are totally into Sharks, or just fascinated by watching all the Shark related programming during Shark Week, then you must pick up a copy of Sharkopedia: The Complete Guide to Everything Shark.
There is even a special introduction in the book by Andy Dehart. He is a biologist and a regular contributor to Shark Week.
Sharkopedia (love the name!) is jam packed with over 400 breathtaking photos spread out over it’s 192 pages. Each photo is vivid and colorful and brings you up close and personal to sharks and see them as you have never seen them before.
Did you know that there are almost 500 different species of sharks? No way! I can probably name 5 if I’m lucky.
If you think you know all there is to know about sharks – think again. I’m sure this book has information about sharks that you have never heard about before.
Some of the topics covered in this book include;
Shark Anatomy and Senses –Explore shark parts, skin, muscles, fins, gills, hearing, taste and touch.
Feeding Habits – What’s the name of the shark that takes small, cookie shaped bites out of its prey?
Record Breakers – Which shark can live over 200 years?
Shark Behavior – Do sharks sleep?
Shark Conservation – Rather than being afraid of sharks, people should be afraid for sharks, as their populations are seriously threatened. Scientists, legislators and advocates—people who love sharks—are working to protect sharks in many ways.
The photos are what really stand out to me in this book. How were photographers about to get THAT CLOSE to sharks? It’s amazing!
FYI… one of the things on my “Bucket List” is to go into one of those cages under the oceans surface and come face to face with a shark – behind steel bars of course where he can’t make a dinner out of me. 🙂
This book is great for all ages. I might even go so far as calling it a coffee table book. It’s a quality book and could easily be displayed for all to see.
“New advances in technology have allowed scientists to learn a great deal about sharks and one thing is abundantly clear – sharks are not the mindless monsters of the deep that many thought them to be,” said Dehart. “Whether you are fascinated or frightened by sharks, Sharkopedia showcases these amazing animals and allows us to captivate audiences year round outside of the water.”
Look for Sharkopedia where ever books are sold (Amazon.com and Barnes & Nobel carry the book too).

I miss back when this was hosted by Craig Ferguson, the comedian who headlines CBS’ “The Late, Late Show”. He was so incredibly funny, and still reminisces about his time with the sharks!

I like reading and learning about animals, and learning about sharks sounds great. I did not know that there are 500 types of Sharks. I thought maybe a few different types, but not that many. I am looking forward to watching!

Sharks fascinate me and scare the heck out of me. The ocean is my favorite place to visit but I won’t go in any further than my ankles for fear of Sharks. I would love to check out Sharkopedia because I think it would be really educational and interesting to read but I don’t think it will help with my Shark phobia 🙂
