Have you ever heard a song, smelled a scent or caught a glimpse of something that brought your mind back to your younger years? Is there something the evokes memories of your childhood? That happens to me often. Sometimes the memories that come to mind are from my childhood. Other times they are from recent years.
Here are a few examples of things that always bring back pleasant memories – The bells from an ice cream truck, the scent of a real Christmas Tree, a song on the radio or seeing a toy I used to play with being sold at a garage sale.
Not too long ago my family was at a flea market where my husband and I came across a toy we both had as children. We never knew that we had the same toy in common (it was a car you could build and take apart). I thought that was pretty cool.
Everyone has something special that brings back great memories. Other things tend to be more “universal”, such as a Root Beer Float. Can you remember the first time (or last time) you enjoyed this All American classic treat? It’s been years since I had one. The last root beer float I had I made myself. Some how it doesn’t taste the same when you make it. Root Beer Floats always taste better when someone makes it for you. 🙂
Many years ago, long before I knew my husband, I dated a guy that lived upstate. It was a 5+ hour drive each way. I used to drive up almost every Friday after work and come home Sunday evening. In hindsight that was an insane thing to do.
There was a little “Mom & Pop” type shop I used to stop at almost every time I made that trip to get a Root Beer Float. I did it so often it was like “second nature” to me to pull off the Interstate and grab a Root Beer Float.
A classic way to enjoy a Root Beer Float is in a Coca-Cola bell soda glass. Do you remember those? I used to have one. I wonder what ever happened to it?
I know that I have readers all over the country (and in other countries too). If you happen to live near a Shoney’s restaurant you might be interested in this fun promotion they have going on this month.
Shoney’s, the great American eatery, is celebrating 65 years of dining by awarding guests with one of America’s all-time, beloved treats – a scrumptious Barq’s root beer float served in a limited edition collectible Coca-Cola bell soda glass. In partnership with Coca-Cola, Shoney’s will offer its breakfast guests a coupon to enjoy the frosty fountain treat at the throwback price of 65 cents with a return meal enjoyed during the luncheon or dinnertime hours (purchase must be $5.00 or more and patrons must dine-in).
Shoney’s was one of the first family casual dining concepts in the United States. Its roots trace back to 1947, when Alex “Shoney” Schoenbaum opened the Parkette Drive-In next to his father’s bowling alley in Charleston, W.Va. Today, Nashville-based Shoney’s is a favorite family casual dining destination, with approximately 200 restaurants in 17 states across the South and Southeast, reaching everyone from growing young families to retirees. The “Shoney’s Homecoming” coupon for a 65-cent Barq’s root beer float is Shoney’s way of saying “thank you” to longtime patrons while welcoming a new generation to enjoy the Shoney’s experience.
The Coca-Cola bell soda glass has been part of the heritage of The Coca-Cola Company since 1929. Like the famous contour bottle for Coca-Cola, the Bell Soda Glass was destined to become forever associated with Coca-Cola worldwide. Still used at many soda fountains, these glasses are visible proof of the timeless popularity of the world’s most-valuable brand.
Beginning Nov. 1 and continuing daily until November 30, 2012, participating Shoney’s restaurants will be distributing 65th anniversary “Shoney’s Homecoming” coupons to every dine-in breakfast guest. Customers can use the coupon with their next dine-in lunch or dinner purchase of $5.00 or more at Shoney’s to redeem the 65-cent root beer float – made with the uniquely bold taste of Barq’s Root Beer – and the distinctive Coca-Cola Bell Soda Glass while supplies of the limited-edition fountain glasses last. (note: The “Shoney’s Homecoming” coupon expires at the close of business on November 30, 2012. If an individual Shoney’s restaurant runs out of the Coca-Cola Bell Soda Glasses before November 30, its participation in the promotion – including the 65-cent root beer float offer – will end at that time.)
I wish we had a Shoney’s near where I live. Sixty-five cents for a classic Root Beer Float is a great deal. I would stop by as often as I could for that price.
I think it’s a fun idea to offer the classic floats in the old fashioned Coca-Colas bell glasses. Some how Root Beer Floats taste even better that way. Maybe it’s because it brings back a lot of nostalgia nad pleasant memories for many people.
A special HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to Shoney’s! :-)!
To find a Shoney’s near you visit www.Shoneys.com. You can also check them out on Facebook and Twitter.
In honor of Shoney’s special birthday promotion I have three sets of Coca-Cola Bell Glasses to give to three lucky readers (3 readers will each get four glasses). Use them to whip up Root Beer Floats in your home whenever you want.
This giveaway is open to US residents only and will end on November 18, 2012 at 12:01 AM (EST). The winners will be chosen at random using a random number generator from all eligible entries. The winners will be notified via e-mail and will have three days to respond or a new winner will be chosen in their place.
To enter please leave a comment on this post and share with me any memories you have about the All-American Root Beer Float – OR – any Root Beef Float recipe you might have – OR – Anything you especially like about Shoney’s (if you have eaten there before).
