I truly enjoy reading children’s books. I’ve always had a fondness for books. I still have many of my books from my childhood. I used to read them to my children and I hope to read them to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren some day.
I miss the days of snuggling up with my children and reading them a story. I wish I could turn back the hands of time and do that again.
I recently read the cutest story collection called Socks n’ Boot’s Adventures. The stories are written by D.K. Smith and illustrated by Lorena Isabel.
Sock and Boots sound like cute names for cuddly kittens. However Sock and Boots are not soft and fuzzy kittens, they are literally a Sock and a Boot. 🙂 The first time I saw an image of Boots I thought he was a dog. His laces gave the illustion of ears the first time I saw him.
Sock n’ Boot’s Adventures features three easy to read stories including Share, Afraid of the Dark and Play it Safe.
In the story Share Sock and Boots head off to the local playground to play and have a picnic. Unbeknown to them some birds came swooped in and ate up Sock’s lunch leaving him with nothing to eat. Children will learn the importance of sharing when Boots shares his lunch with his best friend.
Afraid of the Dark features only Sock who is, of course, afraid fo the dark like many young children. He’s afraid of the noises that he hears and fears there is a monster in his closet. Sock soon learns that his fears are unfounded and there is nothing to worry about at night.
Lastly there is the story Play is Safe. Sock and Boots are playing around the house when Sock decides to hide some place potentially dangerous. Boots warned him to play it safe but Sock did not heed his warning and soon found out the hard way that Boots was right.
Each story is very quick to read. They are ideal for an early reader and most especially to be read to a child by a parent or loved one. Each story rhymns too which is always fun for children.
I enjoyed the adorable illustrations. Make sure to look in the background at the other critters in the book. You’ll find cute little mice, a bird dressed as a nurse and other cute critters.
The back of the book featured several coloring pages. I love the images however they spaces are limited. You would need to use colored pencils or markers to color in the pictures rather then crayons.
According to their Facebook page, the Sock n Boots franchise of stories was created to not only teach young children valuable life lessons, but also to stimulate positive thinking while building a bond between parents and children or teachers and students.
The goal of the books is to transform story time into an interactive bonding time.
Each Sock n Boots story begins with a question, then through the antics of the characters a lesson is taught that answers the question. Once the story is finished the question is posed again which opens the way for discussion and interaction.
