“Experience” Disney’s Moana at a Dolby Cinema at AMC Theater

moana-movie-poster

The movie going experience has changed A LOT since I was a young girl. Some things have stayed the same – like popcorn and candy from the concession stand. But seeing the movie it’s self has changed so much over the years, including how movies are made.

It’s common knowledge that movies made these days are high-tech, made with an arsenal of computer software and technologies to bring movies to life. Even animated movies have come a long way.

When I was a young girl, my mom would take me to a local movie theater every week during the summer to see Disney films. Each week the theater would bring back an old Disney film (and charge 1/2 price for tickets). That allowed me to see such classics as Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella (made before I was born) on the big screen.

Animated films have changed so much. They are no longer “flat” animations. Today’s animations are so realistic that you would swear they were shot in real life.

Yesterday my husband and I got to “experience” and animated film – Moana. Our daughter couldn’t join us because she had to work and our son felt weird going with just us (plus he worried it was a “girly film,” which it is not).

amc

When I say “experience” the film, I mean that we felt like we were IN the film, thanks to the amazing Dolby Cinema at AMC Theater we saw the film in. If you have never seen a film at a Dolby Cinema you are missing out on an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G movie going experience.

Our local Dolby Cinema theater is at the AMC Theater at the Westfield Mall (aka Garden State Plaza) in New Jersey. When you walk into the lobby you are greeted with a grande foyer worthy of a major Hollywood Event.

We picked up our tickets, courtesy of Disney for the purpose of reviewing the film. Then we were greeted by a representative from Dolby Cinema who gave us handy drawstring bags and fun pins.

Once inside the theater it’s self, I got the feeling I was about to embark on a spectacular movie premiere (even though it was just a regular mainstream movie). The theater is HUGE with a super sized screen.

Dolby Cinema at AMC Theaters have THE BEST SEATS in any movie theater. They are large and roomy (great for “plus size” people like myself) and recline. That’s right – they recline! The buttons are conveniently located on the arm, along with a cup holder for your beverage.

I tried to take video of the theater and photos of the seats, but the theater was dark. This was the best I could get.

seats

I must forewarn you – the seats are so comfy you could easily fall asleep. LOL!

The theater is built so that you can recline your seat and there is still plenty of people to walk up and down your aisle.

A magical thing that the seats do is that they “vibrate” (for lack of a better description), depending on the action going on during the film. That sense of movement makes you fee like you are right there in the film as the action is happening.

The movie appears crystal clear on the big screen. It’s so crisp that you can see every tiny detail – right down to the strands of hair on the characters heads. It’s mind blowing!

The colors are bright and bold and “true to life.”

When it comes to Dolby, you know it’s all about the sound quality. You cannot beat the sound quality of a Dolby Cinema movie theater.

When you combine the sound, the quality of the picture and the impressive reclining chairs – your movie going gets taken to a whole new level. You just don’t watch a movie – you EXPERIENCE a movie in the best way possible.

Given the opportunity I would watch every film at a Dolby Cinema at AMC Theater.

On to the film…

I have been excited to see Moana ever since I saw the first trailer for it.

Moana is the story about a young girl (Moana) who lives on an island with her parents, grandmother and many other families. Her father is the chief and Moana is being groomed to take over for him one day.

Ever since she was a toddler, Moana has always been intrigued by the ocean. It’s as if it calls her. Her parents on the other hand, especially her father, want her to steer clear from the ocean. The only safe place for them is on the island and within the reef. The world past the reef is dark and dangerous.

Moana tries to do the right thing, but as she gets old the sea seem to be calling for her more and more. Her grandmother is aware of this and tell her that the ocean chose her.

Things start to take a turn for the worse on the island. Coconut trees are dying. There is no more fish and the residents are worried that an ancient curse has finally found their island.

With her grandmother’s help, Moana knows that she needs to step up to save the island by locating a demigod named Maui and taking him to an island to return a special stone that he stole many years ago, which is the reason for the curse to be spreading throughout the world.

Moana is not an experienced sailor but she takes on the challenge to help her people.

Tenacious teenager Moana (voice of Auliʻi Cravalho) recruits a demigod named Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) to help her become a master wayfinder and sail out on a daring mission to save her people. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker, produced by Osnat Shurer, and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i, “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016. ©2016 Disney. Moana does find Maui (voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) as well as a plethora of challenges along the way including evil coconut critters who want the stone Moana is trying to return.

Will they succeed? To find out you need to go and see Moana, playing at Dolby Cinemas and other movie theaters across the country.

We LOVED the movie! Loved it! Loved It! Loved It! It had it all – heart, humor, adventure, love, friendship, challenges… you name it. It even has a fantastic sound track. Even late last night my husband told me that one of the songs (How Far Will I Go) was stuck in his head.

The animation is so incredibly realistic! WOW! I was super impressed by how incredibly visual the film is. From the water to Moana’s toenails… they all look so real!

I loved all the characters in the film. Of course Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) and Maui were two of my favorites, but other characters like Pua the pig and Hei Hei the chicken also stole my heart. So much so I told my husband I want a stuffed/plush Pua and Hei Hei for Christmas.

There is an evil character in the film – a lava monster. That is the only character that I think might be a wee bit scar for little ones. There are a few scenes with that character too. The lava monster reminded me of the evil devil like creature at the end of the film This is the End.

This is a film not to be missed in theaters. You have to experience Moana to truly appreciate all it’s beauty. The best way would be at a Dolby Cinema and AMC Theater. If you don’t have one near you, you still should go and see the film. If I were to rate it from one to five stars I’d give Moana 20 stars! It’s that good.

It looks really good. I have a feeling Moana gifts are going to be in high demand this holiday season. I already told “Santa” that I want a plush Pua pig toy for Christmas.

I am excited to take my family to see Moana this coming opening weekend (Saturday, November 26th to be exact) at a nearby Dolby Cinema at AMC.

If you have never experienced a film at a Dolby Cinema at AMC theater it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

At Dolby Cinema at AMC theaters you don’t just watch a movie – you EXPERIENCE a movie.

First and foremost the seats are AWESOME! They are roomy, comfy and recline. Every time we see a movie in an Dolby Cinema at AMC theater we wish we could take the chairs home with us. LOL! The chairs even pulsate along with the action on the screen.

Movies seen on a Dolby Cinema at AMC theater screen are see with spectacular imaging and vibrant colors. The images are crystal clear and make you feel like you are a part of the film and not just watching it.

The screen and theater are also “curved” which I feel add to the experience and helps you to feel like you are a part of the film and not just a spectator.

Don’t get me started on the sound quality. It’s spectacular! After all, the sound comes from Dolby technologies.

Once you have had the opportunity to experience a film in a Dolby Cinema at AMC theater, going back to a regular theater just won’t do. Other theaters are pale by comparison.

I cannot wait to see Moana this coming weekend at the Dolby Cinema at AMC theater. The film alone looks breathtaking (I love the landscape and ocean scenes). Factor in impressive sound, crystal clear imaging on the screen and the world’s most comfortable seats and it’s going to be an experience we won’t soon forget.

Movie Review: Disney’s Zootopia

movie poster

Now playing in theaters nationwide is the latest Disney film release Zootopia.

Zootopia stars the voice talents of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Bonnie Hunt, Tommy Chong, Octavia Spencer and Shakira, to name a few.

Zootopia stars a young rabbit name Judy Hopps (Goodwin). Ever since Judy was little she wanted to be a Police officer. Her parents – although supportive – felt like she would be better off in the family business (farming), most especially since no rabbit has ever become a Police officer before.

Judy never gave up on her dream. Even when it seemed like she wouldn’t graduate from the Police academy, Judy pulled herself together to not only succeed, but also to be come the Valedictorian of her graduating class.

Judy was not only a Police officer, she was also assigned her dream destination – Zootopia. Zootopia is a place where all animals live together in harmony, even predators and prey.

Judy’s dreams were quickly dashed when instead of solving crimes and chasing criminals she is assigned the position of meter maid.

At first she was discouraged but she decided to use this opportunity to prove that she is a good worker in hopes of getting a better assignment.

Fun Judy Hopp and Nick Wilde "ears" that we received from the theater.

Fun Judy Hopp and Nick Wilde “ears” that we received from the theater.

While doing her meter maid duties Judy meets a fox named Nick. Their initial meeting seemed to go well. It’s only afterwards that Judy learned about what kind of animal Nick really was.

Many animals have started to go missing from Zootopia, including a loving family man named Emmitt Otter.

Determined to prove herself, Judy tells Emmitt Otter’s wife the she can find him. Her Sergeant was not happy with her making that kind of promise and was going to fire her, but for the sake of not upsetting the Mayor of Zootopia, the Sergeant gave Judy 48 hours to find Emmitt Otter or else she would have to resign from her job as a Police officer.

Judy doesn’t have much to go on, but she did find a link between the missing Emmitt Otter and that sly fox, Nick, that she met earlier. He might just be the lead she is looking for.

What happens next Judy did not anticipate. She also didn’t think she had to partner up with Fox – a natural enemy of rabbits.

Will Judy and Nick find the missing Emmitt Otter, or maybe the other missing animal from Zootopia? Who could be behind their disappearances and why? To find out go see Disney’s Zootopia, now playing at a theater near you.

We went to see Disney’s Zootopia at a Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime Theater. Not only does AMC have your comfort in mind, the amazing sound quality from Dolby Cinema turns your movie going into an “experience.”

The AMC Prime Theater we went to had the look and feel of something straight out of Hollywood. It’s hard to believe this grand theater with elaborate decor is located at a local mall.

The AMC Prime Theater had just about everything you could want, from popular candies to freshly popped popcorn. They even have self serve beverage dispensers. Instead of pressing buttons you can scroll through a variety of beverage options on the computer screen. It’s a fun experience. We didn’t do it this time around, but we used the beverage machine at an AMC Prime Theater in New York City. There were so many options to choose from.

We LOVE the seats at AMC Theaters. They are big, comfy and recline. Be sure you had enough rest before going to the movies. The seats are so comfortable that you can easily fall asleep in them.

As a plus size woman I appreciate the ample seat size. I also like that they have a built in cup holder for your beverage.

One of my favorite features in the theater is the ample room between seats. You don’t have to push your seat up or get out of the way to let people pass by. There is more than enough room for people to pass by you even with your seat fully reclined.

Seat

I really like how the screen looks in the theater. I am not 100% sure but it seems curved in a way, making it seem like you are “inside” the action on the screen. The film quality on the screen is also crystal clear with true to life color.

The sound quality is equally as amazing. Dolby is well known for it’s quality sound products, and the AMC Prime Theaters are no exception. The sound is so incredible that at times you can even feel your seat shake.

This is why I say seeing a film at a Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime Theater location is more than just seeing a film – it’s EXPERIENCING a film.

SS

Anyway… back to the movie.

We loved it. In fact my husband said that he liked Zootopia better than Frozen, Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur – all GREAT films. I wouldn’t say I like it better than those films – I think they are all great on their own.

This is a Disney film, so it’s made to be “family friendly,” however there are some parts of the film I think might be a bit too intense for very young movie goers. Especially when the animals go “wild.”

There are plenty of funny parts that everyone will laugh at – and many scenes with humor only adults will understand and find funny.

Zootopia56d7726766f33

There are lessons to be learned in this film. I was surprised to see how much bullying went on, and how people are judged for what they look like rather than who they are. This holds true today as bullying has become rampant in our schools and on social media.

The film also highlights friendship, determination, believing in yourself and others.

A fun, family film that teaches some important life lessons – it doesn’t get any better than that.

The characters are all very likeable. Even the residents of Zootopia are enjoyable. My favorites are the mice and hamsters. The sloths at the Department of Motor Vehicles are hysterical.

If you are looking for a wonderful film to see this weekend, check out Disney’s Zootopia. If you happen to live near a Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime Theater, go and see the movie there. You won’t be disappointed.
