Vitamin Angels & Whole Foods Market – Helping “at risk” people around the globe (giveaway ends 7/20/12)



It’s hard to think about not getting enough essential vitamins and minerals if you eat a well balanced meals every day. Some people do require supplements, but for the most part if you eat the recommended foods and amount each day you should be OK when it comes to the vital nutrients your body needs. In impoverished countries around the world making sure they get enough important vitamins and minerals takes a back seat to simply getting a meal.

One very important vitamin is lacking in many diets around the world. That vitamin is Vitamin A.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO);

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children and increases the risk of disease and death from severe infections. In pregnant women VAD causes night blindness and may increase the risk of maternal mortality.

Vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem in more than half of all countries, especially in Africa and South-East Asia, hitting hardest young children and pregnant women in low-income countries.

For children, lack of vitamin A causes severe visual impairment and blindness, and significantly increases the risk of severe illness, and even death, from such common childhood infections as diarrhoeal disease and measles.

An estimated 250 000 to 500 000 vitamin A-deficient children become blind every year, half of them dying within 12 months of losing their sight.

This information is very frightening. To this that one deficiency can cause so many health issues – including blindness and death.

There is an organization called Vitamin Angels who helps to donate vitamins to at-risk populations who need it the most around the world. They especially target pregnant women, new mothers and children under five.

Here is some “food for thought” – It only takes .25 cents to provide enough Vitamin A for an as-risk child for an ENTIRE YEAR. If people would give up just one specialty drink (average $4) and donate that $4 to Vitamin Angels, they could provide Vitamin A to 16 people for an entire year.


This year Whole Foods Market has partnered up with Vitamin Angels for a fourth year in a row to help donate Vitamin A to at risk populations.

This year, when you purchase any Whole Foods Market brand or 365 Everyday Value supplements in stores, Whole Foods Market will donate .25 to Vitamin Angels.

In addition to the Whole Foods Market and 365 Everyday Value supplements, other brands like Amazing Grass, Garden of Life, Jarrow Formulas, Reserveage, Nordic Naturals and Source Naturals are also donating a portion of their sales to Vitamin Angels.

Even just one simple purchase of any of these brands can positively affect both your family and communities across the globe!

Some products you might want to consider are Cocoa Well from Reserveage. It’s a fair trade dark chocolate that has Omega-3 in it.
