Hearing the words “What’s that smell?” can’t be good. After all, who wants partake in a mysterious smell that no one can identify. Not me! Between my messy kids and pets, I have enough random smells to contend with. Ha Ha.
A few days ago I wrote a post about starting a Family Game Night tradition this year. I have another fun game to add to the list of possible games you and your family would enjoy.
I was sent to review a very unique, and very stinky (as in smelly, not bad), game to review called What’s that Smell?
There are games, and then there are party games (games that bring out a lot of laughs and good times). What’s that Smell? is definitely a party game. It will be talked about days (even weeks) later.
What’s that Smell is a smelling game where you have to guess what smell is on the card in front of you. Some smells are enjoyable, others, not so much.
This game is for 2-6 players, but the kids I work with play with more than six players sometimes. The beauty of this game is that it’s flexible and you can come up with your own game (at least that is what the kids I work with have done).
There is an app component to this game. You do not need to utilize the app. We don’t use electronics at work, so the kids play without using the app. I’ve honestly not even checked the app out because we have so much fun with the game “as is.”
To play What’s that Smell, each player takes a mystery smell card and a game sheet. Each player uses a scratcher (a cardboard piece to scratch the card with) to gently scratch the card to release the scent. Once you have an idea of what the scent might be, you write it down on your game sheet, along with a memory that the scent reminds you of.
The kids I work with simply write down what they think the scent is. As I mentioned earlier, you can come up with your own way to play this game. Forgoing the memory option is good for younger kids.
You also assign the scent to a certain category
Once each player has had a chance to smell their card and write down their response, the cards are passed on to the next player. You continue doing this until each player has had a chance to smell each card.
Once each player has smelled each card, one of the players (or each player) reads out loud what the card scents were. The person who guessed the most correctly is the winner of that round.
You also give out points for best guess, correct category and funniest memory. Or you can simply make the winner the person who guessed the most correctly.
The winner gets to choose another player to smell one of the horrible, disgusting, stinky card (three big whiffs!). These cards come sealed in individual bags (unlike the regular scent cards used in this game). The game also comes with little zip lock bags to put them in when you are done with them.
Let me tell you – these stinky cards can clear a room! And it has!
When I originally brought the game into work, the kids were super curious about the really stinky cards, so they opened them up. The first card (something to do with puke) was enough to gross out the kids, but the explosive diaper card actually had the kids running out of the room. LOL!
I cannot express to you enough how horrible those stinky cards smell. So much so that we keep them in the cabinet and only let the kids use them if they really want to. The kids tend to just play the game to see who can identify the most smells correctly, and they are happy with that. But occasionally they request the really stinky cards. It all depends on whose playing the game (some kids don’t mind the smells as much as others do). The boys tend to be the bravest when it comes to those truly stinky cards.
What’s that Smell comes with playing cards, game sheets, small stands to put the cards on (the kids at work never use them).
They kids at work have had a blast with this game. I haven’t played it with them (I’m too busy doing other things), but I hear them laughing and going “ewww” and “gross!” so it appears they really enjoy this game.

What do you think about this game? Does it sound like something you, your family and/or friends would enjoy playing?
What is your most favorite scent? What is your least favorite scent? I personally love the scent of Lilacs and I can’t stand the smell of the dumpster in our parking lot.
