Would you rather…

Venetian Apricot Chicken

… give up social media, TV and/or their cell phone for one month than go on a diet? A recent poll found that 36% of U.S. adults would rather give up TV, Facebook, Twitter and/or their all important cell phones rather then go on a diet for just one month. I hate dieting too, but wow! There are some people who are truly against dieting. I would rather nosh on salads and grilled chicken then give up my TV or cell phone. I guess that puts me in with the other 64%.

Many people resolve to lose weight (diet), exercise and eat healthier in the new year. Dieting is probably the #1 resolution, but sadly, it’s one that most people can’t stick to. Dieting is not easy. If it was so easy there wouldn’t be that many overweight people in this world.

It’s not too hard to eat healthier when you are at home. Simply avoid purchasing and bringing into your home “bad” foods like chips, candy, cookies, cake and soda. Instead opt for more fruits and veggies. Bake, broil or steam foods instead of frying them. Watch your portion sizes. These are all simple things we can all do.

Trying to count calories when you go out to a restaurant is where it gets tricky. There are usually so many mouth watering items on the menu that it’s nearly impossible to make the right choices. It’s especially hard if there are photos to accompany each menu item. It’s hard to make the right choice when something ooey, gooey, rich or fried is staring you in the face.

Thankfully many restaurants are making efforts to provide patrons with more menu option, especially ones that are a “healthier-for-you” option.

One of my favorite restaurants (my husband’s too) has created special menu items for those who are counting calories. The restaurant is Olive Garden (I Olive Garden!). Their new menu items are part of their Lighter Italian Fare Menu. The new menu features five different entrées that are loaded with flavor, and all under 575 calories. Some of the Lighter Italian Fare menu items include Lasagna Primavera with Grilled Chicken, Herb-Grilled Salmon, Linguine alla Marinara and one that I am most anxious to try – Venetian Apricot Chicken (pictured at the top of this post). Mmm! Doesn’t that sound good? It’s grilled chicken breasts in an apricot citrus sauce. That sounds delish!

My family has been planning on visiting the Olive Garden, but weather has not played in our favor. I hope we can get there soon because I want to try the Venetian Apricot Chicken, or one of the other Lighter Italian Fare menu items. When we finally get a chance to go I’ll be sure to take pictures and let you know how it tasted. I am also craving Olive Garden’s salad. Have you enjoyed their salads yet? Oh my! It’s the best salad I’ve ever had.

Longhorn Steakhouse

If you have a LongHorn Steakhouse in your are you might be interested in knowing that they also have a healthier-for-you menu. It’s called the Flavorful Under 500 Menu. All of the items on this special menu are UNDER 500 calories. Each one features a complete steakhouse meal – entrée, choice of vegetable side and a salad. Some of their new menu items include Napa Grilled Chicken, Renegade Sirloin and Sierra Chicken. Each of these menu items are priced at $11.99. That is a great price for so much food. Plus it’s all under 500 calories.

Other Flavorful Under 500 menu items vary from restaurant to restaurant. It’s best if you visit their official website, www.LonghornSteakhouse.com and put in your zip code (top right of the home page screen). From there you can view your local menu and see what items are available to you.

  1. I would rather go on a diet. Actually, it’s better to change your eating habits and lifestyle rather than trying the new fad in order to lose weight. A lifestyle change is going to last longer and decreases the chances of putting the weight back on.

    Enjoyed the post.
