Now that Thanksgiving is over it’s time to focus on getting all of the holiday shopping done. We just have to pick up a few more things for the kids and we should be done.
I’d like to get some books for our 12 year old son. He needs to bring a book to school with him every day to read during quiet time or when he’s finished with his classwork. Right now he has the book War Horse, however I think he finished reading it about a month ago. He just brings it to school with him because he doesn’t like any of the books we have at home.
Over the past few months I have donated A LOT of books to various charities. There are only a hand full of books left compared to what we used to have. None of the books we have appeal to our son. Therefore I’d like to get him a couple of books for him to read at school.
The problem with my son is that he is a reluctant reader. Simply put he HATES to read. I don’t know why. He reads at a 12th grade reading level, so it’s not like he can’t comprehend what he’s reading. He just doesn’t find books interesting.
So far the only books he’s actually liked are 39 Clues and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I already picked up the newest release of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever. I’m also not sure if he’s still into 39 Clues. He hasn’t asked for those books in over a year.
Does anyone know what books are popular with ‘tween and young teen boys? He’s not really into science fiction, sports or fantasy books. That really limits my options because it would appear that most books I’m finding fall under one of those genres.
He likes comedy books, like Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Are there other book series for his age group that are funny? If so PLEASE comment and let me know. If fact, if you have any book suggestions I would very much love to hear from you.
Another thing I am curious to know has to do with the book Hunger Games. I’ve heard of it before but I really don’t know much about it. My daughter’s friends are all raving about the book. My daughter keeps asking for it. The only problem is I don’t know if it’s age appropriate for her. She’s 14. If anyone is familiar with the book would you recommend it for a 14 year old?
I welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Barefoot has some great new chapter books. Would he like historical? I thought The Shipwreck looked good – http://store.barefootbooks.com/the-shipwreck.html/?bf_affiliate_code=000-03wv

You may want to visit http://www.flamingnet.com/ to read reviews by teens about young adult fiction or http://www.teenreads.com/ for more ideas. These were recommended to our family by a middle school language arts teacher.

Maybe try books of comics like Far Side, Peanuts, or Calvin and Hobbes? My 8 year old loves them and will go through an inch thick book of them until she’s read them all! She likes the choose your own adventure series too. They’re more interactive than just reading a normal book. If he’s into a hobby you could get non-fiction books related to what they’re interested in.

I’m not sure if this is too advanced for him, but my 14 year old just read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and recommended it to me. I am reading it now (well, between Christmas and house and kids and blog reads) and I can see how he liked it… being a teen boy. My son used to LOVE to read, then lost that passion when sports took over. I am ALSO trying to find books for him.
