Do you consider yourself a sandwich person? Do you crave a good old PJ&J? Does the idea of a grilled cheese sandwich make your mouth water? Or are you a fan of the classic BLT?

Personally I love the classic ham and Swiss on rye, with lettuce, onions, mayo and just a little bit of mustard. Mmm… yummy!

I’m also a big fan of scrambled egg sandwiches (scrambled eggs sandwiched in between two pieces of toast).

Our favorite sandwiches are made out of ingredients that we love, but let’s face it, the key to any great sandwich is the bread. You need the perfect bread to build your favorite sandwich.

Are you familiar with Arnold® Breads? The brand also goes by the names Brownberry and Oroweat in different parts of the country. Where I live (New York) we know it as Arnold® Bread. For the sake of this post I will refer to the brand as that, but please note the different brand names.

Arnold

To enter, fans can submit their sandwich recipes to AmericasBetterSandwich.com for a chance to win the grand prize of $25,000!!! Talk about a lot of “dough,” LOL!

Winners in each of the five categories with the highest overall scores will receive $5,000 – so you have more than one chance to win. The five categories are:

“Open-Faced Artistry” (sandwiches are works of art for the world to see, and these snacks and meals should announce their nutritious ingredients—like bright beets or tasty tuna— sans second slice);

“Breakfast in Bread” (these sandwiches, featuring nutrient rich breakfast favorites like eggs and yogurt, invoke images of cozy mornings in bed or boisterous brunches with friends);

“Creative Classics” (nutritious spins on sandwich creations that have stood the test of time, such as grandma’s club sandwich, BLT or other old-time favorites);

“Fueling Good” (these sandwiches should incorporate ingredients that help boost your energy such as healthful fats, protein, fiber and iron)

“State Favorites” (whether it’s a well-known sandwich in the state you reside, or a must-have local dish that can transition into a sandwich, celebrate your state pride by re-creating these state favorites with better-for-you ingredients)

In addition, Arnold® Bread  will donate one (1) loaf of bread to Feeding America for each entry and or vote submitted, with a minimum of 75,000 and up to 100,000 loaves donated. That is AWESOME!!! I am thrilled to hear that the brand is giving back to the community as part of this fun contest.

Entries will be accepted up until August 21, 2016. Online consumer voting will take place from September 26, – October 23, 2016. The winners will be announced on National Sandwich Day (November 3, 2016).

I used some Arnold® Bread recently to make an amazing sandwich. My original intent was to use Arnold® Bread sandwich thins, but they ended up being too small for what I wanted to do. I had to swap out the Arnold® Bread Sandwich Thins for Arnold® Bread Country White Bread (it was the only other bread we had on hand – any Arnold® Bread would work with this recipe).

This is NOT my recipe. I have seen something similar to it on the Internet (I honestly don’t know where I saw it). This is my version of the sandwich (the recipe I saw used different cheese, fresh bacon and used the bacon grease to brown the bread in).

I don’t have a name for this recipe, but here are the ingredients and how I put it together.

Sandwich Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • Arnold® Bread of your choice (one that has normal sized slices is best)
  • A few slices of Cheddar Cheese, Munster Cheese OR your favorite cheeses
  • Bacon (optional)
  • Pickles (long sliced ones work best)
  • Mayonnaise

Directions:

  1. Spread the mayonnaise on one side of a slice of bread and lay it in a frying pan.
  2. Add a slice or two of one type of cheese on top of the bread.
  3. Add a slice or two of pickle on top of the cheese.
  4. Next, add another slice or two of a different cheese (if you prefer). Top that with a slice or two of bacon.
  5. Finish it off with another slice or two of cheese (if you want).
  6. Finally, top the sandwich with another slice of bread that has mayonnaise spread on the outside of the slice.
  7. Cook a few minutes on medium heat the flip over for another few minutes. It will be done when the bread is crispy and golden brown and the cheeses have melted.

I know this is not the healthiest sandwich, but it was something I was wanting to try for a long time now. It turned out amazing too!

You could substitute things like turkey bacon (or no bacon), low fat cheeses, low fat mayonnaise, butter instead of mayo, less cheese and so forth. You could also use turkey slices instead of bacon. If you think about it there are a lot of ways you can make this sandwich a bit better for you.

I do eat healthy sandwiches – this was just something I really wanted to try.

A great healthy option is Arnold® Bread (such as whole wheat) with a little peanut butter and slices of Granny Smith apples. Mmm! You should try it. It’s really good!

Overall I am glad that I finally made this sandwich. I plan on making it again but I’ll mix up the ingredients a bit (I’d omit the bacon and maybe use a slice of ham).

This sandwich was so yummy!
