A Most Wonderful Weekend!

This is the first time in ages that everything seems to be going “right”. Sure, there are a few “quirks” along the way but oddly enough they are not bothering me as much as they normally would have. I think all the great things that happened this weekend make all those other thing seem so insignificant.

On Friday the shower broke. In my lame attempt to fix it I smashed my hand. It still hurts but not as bad. That is why I didn’t blog much this weekend.

We had no choice but to call the plumber. Since he had to come right away they charged us “time and half”. Oh joy. Just what we need.

The plumber was in and out in about a 1/2 hour and the bill was $220 for an hour at time and a half plus a part. Sigh… We really don’t have that kind of money as I’m sure many of my readers can relate to.

My husband logged into his computer to transfer money from savings into checking to cover the check he had to write the plumber. He was shocked to discover that his final bonus from the contracting  company he works for deposited into our checking account a week early. I cannot even begin to tell you just how much of a HUGE relief it was to get that bonus (more on that in a moment).

The current company he works for cut his salary by $20,000. He was getting a bonus every six months which helped – a lot. But then the said they couldn’t do that anymore either so this was his last one. To see that much needed and welcomed money in checking felt so good.

My husband has been looking for a new job for about a year and a half. For the longest time he hasn’t had any job offers. Recently he has had two phone interviews and a face-to-face interview. Sadly he hasn’t found another job. His current job keeps finding ways to cut more and more out of his salary (such as the pay cut and no longer giving a bonus) plus we have THE WORST insurance ever. I cannot even go to my Hematologist for my much needed infusions because our current insurance barely pays for a thing.

Before we were getting ready to head out thd phone rang. The caller ID listed the name of a college I used to attend. We didn’t answer it because we figured it was the alumni association looking for donations.

We noticed that they left a message so my husband checked the voicemail. It was a former co-worker of his. He happens to work at the college I used to go to doing computer stuff like my husband currently does. He said that they were looking to hire someone and he happened to notice my husband’s name in the sea of resumes on his desk. Since he knows my husband (they worked together for a few years) AND my husband’s ex-boss is now working for his ex-coworkers as well as another lady that used to work with him. This guy said it would be great to get the whole team back together so he wanted to offer my husband the job!

I’d have to say we’re 75% certain he has the job. His fried wants him to stop by tomorrow (Monday) so they could talk some more and so my husband can take a look around. He even told my husband not to say “yes” yet until he checks the place out, just in case it’s not for him. To me that sounds like he has a job!

We just need to find out a few things like insurance, salary and a few other things. If all goes well my husband will accept the job and he can FINALLY be free of his current employer.

This is why it was so wonderful that the bonus came a week early. My husband felt that if he accepted the job tomorrow and gave his two week notice his current employer would NOT give him that bonus and we would have lost out on that money. Now that we have the money it doesn’t matter. He can give his two week notice and not get penalized. Plus they would owe him for unused vacation time which would mean a few more dollars. Yeah!

To celebrate my husband took us to our favorite Chinese restaurant, Ocean Empire. Yes, I know I’m on Nutrisystem. This was a special celebration.

After dinner we headed to the outdoor concert in the park. My “cousin” Kevin’s band was playing there. He’s in a Journey tribute band called Separate Ways (www.JustLikeJourney.com). I haven’t seen my “cousin” in 20 years. He’s my second cousin’s ex-husband. Technically no biological relations to me but I’ve always referred to him as my cousin. We did see him briefly back in April which is how I knew about the concert.

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect. It has been so unbearably hot and humid for WEEKS. The weather was nice and cool with a subtle breeze. It was the best possible weather for an outdoor concert.

My cousin’s band ROCKS! If you are familiar with the band Journey the lead singer sounds 100% like Steve Perry. You can see for yourself. Go to www.JustLikeJourney.com and look at the videos in the “Media” section. My cousin Kevin is the guy with the long blond hair (he’s not really a blond). Kevin shouldn’t have been there either. He JUST had surgery! But the band didn’t have anyone to cover for him so he performed because he didn’t want to let them down.

As you can see Friday turned out pretty good (except for smashing my hand).

Since we had some money we decided to do some back to school shopping on Saturday. There is only one store we have found that carries jeans that fit my daughter. She’s short and most places around here carry regular size jeans.

The prices of the jeans were cringe worthy! We looked at all the jeans and they ranged from $32 (Levis) to $60! She needed at least four pairs of jeans too. She ended up with two $32 Levis and two pairs of Candies jeans at $48 each. I cannot believe how expensive jeans are. Two of them were that ripped design too. Ugh!

While we were on check out my husband and I played our little game “Guess how much”. We both guessed over $400 between the jeans and other things (my son needed jeans too – although his were a lot less).

As we were waiting our turn the lady in front of us turned to me and said “Do you want this?” and handed me a coupon for 15% off. OH YES!!! I thanked her profusely and accepted the coupon.

When our things were being rung up we noticed the prices were A LOT less. The $32 jeans were $22 and the $48 jeans were $29. It looks like everything we purchased was on sale.

I have several gift cards that I carry around. I asked the lady if I could use one for this order and she said I can use up to four.

With our discount, the sale prices and my gift cards the $400+ order (I forgot the exact amount but it was over $400) came to $141.00 and change. WOW! That totally made our day! Except for sneakers the kids are 100% done with their clothes shopping and my husband picked up a few things he needed too.

Next we went to another store to pick up a few more supplies. I actually found a whole bunch of girl’s white tee shirts with designs on them for $1.00 each. SCORE!!! Needless to say I grabbed several for my daughter. She can wear to them to school, hanging out or even as a night shirt. For $1.00 each you can’t pass that up.

While still riding high from this great weekend we went out to Costco this afternoon. We used to shop there once a month however since my husband’s salary was cut back in the beginning of the year we couldn’t afford to go. You can EASILY spent $200+ at those wholesale stores stocking up on supplies. We don’t go anymore because we simply can’t afford it.

As odd as it sounds even the kids looked forward to going to Costco today. They love to sample all the foods they offer samples for and they know that we’ll pick up their favorites like grapes, strawberries and muffins.

Who knew that even just a simple trip to Costco would make us feel so happy. I think that is because my husband went food shopping earlier today (before I got up – Love that man!) so between food shopping and Costco our pantry and fridge are overflowing.  We went from only having the bare necessities in the fridge to things falling out when you open the door. It looks like a produce aisle in my fridge with all the fruits and veggies. I was even able to get my K-cups for my Keurig. I have been making my own cups with the My-Kap system. It’s NICE to have some real cups for a change.

It’s a GREAT feeling knowing that we are almost done food shopping and our family has plenty to eat. Plus it’s exciting to think that my husband might have a new job with HOPEFULLY better insurance so that we can take the kids back to their old dentist again and I can get my infusions.

I know I’m rambling and I should be getting to bed (it’s almost 1 AM). I am just so happy and so relived all at the same time. With everything that has gone on with my husband’s job, his brother passing away, the miserable heat and a few others things it’s just a MASSIVE relief to see the winds of change have pushed up towards a happier, most positive direction. Even my business has picked up a bit. I’ve had four orders in the past week. Every little bit helps ($$$$).

I hope that all of you had an extra-wonderful weekend too!
