I was promoted at my job to a site director. That means that I got a nice raise (yeah) and I am able to run the program the way I want (within reason of course).
I was looking forward to the start of the new school year. I had so many plans I wanted to do with my “work kids.” One thing I was especially excited about doing – volunteering. Not in the physical sense (I cannot take the kids off the property), but rather do things AT SCHOOL that I can give out to the community.
Some of the ideas I had in mind include;
- Making dog and cat toys to donate to the local animal shelter.
- Making holiday cards for the residents of a local nursing home.
- Making bookmarks for the residents of a local nursing home.
Sadly, I have yet to get the chance to do anything like this with my “work kids.” Nothing has panned out as of yet. I am still hoping that there is something I can do to show them how important it is to volunteer in the community.
I think that encouraging kids to volunteer and/or do helpful things in the community is a great idea. Young people are also full of great ideas that could help the homeless, elderly, stray animals and others in the community.
Alltruists is a brand that is on a mission to inspire kids and parents to make the world better – and then show them how to do it.
Alltruists brings eco-friendly boxes of thoughtfully-designed volunteering projects to your living room, helping kids explore topics ranging from social to environmental, such as why we need bees and why some people experience homelessness. The company offers both a subscription service for new projects monthly, and a storefront featuring all past monthly kits, as well as a range of topics parents can select from. Each project includes conversation guides for parents, empathy-building activities, creative projects, and a donation experience that kids can take real action on.
Currently Alltruists has available the following boxes;
Each box contains a lot of great about the subject matter, as well as several activities to help children (and families) to realize just how important the subject matter is.
Take for example the Save the Bees box that I received to review.
Inside the box you’ll find five booklets on the importance of bees, and what we can do to help them. Bees are VERY important to our lives. They pollenate plants the product the fruits and vegetables that we all eat. They also help pollenate other plants, like trees and bushes. Without bees, humans would have a major food shortage. There is not enough food to feed everyone on Earth to begin with. Image if we eliminated most fruits and vegetables from our lives? Imagine how devastating that would be?
There are several activities in this box. One activity shows how bees go from plant to plant to pollenate them. Another activity (my favorite) is building a “Bee Hotel.” EVERYTHING you need is included in the box.
Due to the weather being too cold for bees, I have not had the opportunity to build the “Bee Hotel” yet. This is an activity I want to do with my “work kids.” I also want to check with the school to see if there is some place we can put the “Bee Hotel” so that the bees are not a risk for children who might be allergic to bee stings. There are woods next to the school that I am hoping they say it’s OK to put there.
This is also a great activity all my “work kids” can do together. They might even want to make one of their own at home once they see how easy they are to make.
What I love about this box is that it educates children about important issues in a non-scary, non-threatening way. Children also learn through doing hands on activities, so the activities provided in each box helps to teach children more about the subject matter.
It’s a new year. 2019 and 2020 were not exactly good years for anyone (compliments of COVID). Let’s start 2022 off on the right foot by doing good for others.
