New clothes and school supplies are the first items listed on most back-to-school lists. After all, they help kids feel ready to head back to school. But, new clothes and school supplies don’t mean that your kids are geared up and ready to take on the challenges of a new school year.
Want to make sure your kids are ready to start the new school year off ready to learn from the first day of class? Add these five tips to your back-to-school to-do list and start the new grade off on the right foot.
1. Review last year’s grades. Pull out last year’s final report cards and review the highs and lows of last year. Make a list of good grades and of the ones that need improving.
2. Set some academic goals. Now that you’re refreshed on last year’s grades, set some academic goals for THIS school year.
3. Routine overhaul. Fine-tune those at-home habits that have an impact on school. This includes bed times and wake up times, eating habits, after-school routines, and homework habits. The earlier that new routines are established, the easier it is to turn them into habits that can be relied on the whole school year.
4. Use an agenda or planner. Agendas are the best time management and organizational tool at students’ disposal, and they are generally underused. They are more than just a place to write down homework, they are great for keeping track of to-do lists, questions to ask teachers, chores, and extra curricular activities.
5. Ask for help. Now that you’ve reviewed the report card and know what the weak areas are, why not start working on them right away? Get on top of any potential issues BEFORE they become a problem, and avoid repeating the same issues again this year.
