We’re a sucker for a good Hollywood romance and these celebrity engagement stories are packed full of fairytale romance, grand gestures and exquisitely expensive rings.
If you’re ready to hear some of the most romantic stories in the game then keep reading for the eight most romantic celebrity engagement stories.
Emmy Rossum and Sam Esmail
When actress and singer Emmy Rossum got engaged to director Sam Esmail it was a (motion) picture perfect experience. A lot of thought went into the proposal with Esmail arranging to have their love story printed in a mock version of The New York Times’ iconic “Modern Love” column. Knowing that they read the column together every weekend, Sam thought the proposal would be a cinch but things were derailed when Emmy announced that she had a sore back and was going to take a bath but that she’d read the story from the bathtub. When she realized Sam was proposing, Rossum said to Vogue, “[I] thought, ‘Well, the story can’t be that I was in the bathtub when it happened.’ So I got out of the bathtub wrapped in a towel, got cold, and then got back in the bathtub … by the time I finished the story he was down on a knee in the bathroom, with me in the tub.” Rom-com worthy or what?!
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
As a couple, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian pretty much epitomize the “go big or go home” attitude. To quote the man himself, this was arguable one of the best celebrity proposals of all time… of all time! Kanye West rented out the entire AT&T baseball stadium to serve as the backdrop for his epic proposal. Leading a blindfolded Kardashian onto the pitch there was a 50-piece orchestra playing her favorite song. With their family and friends quietly watching from the dugout, Kanye dropped to one knee, poised with a 15-carat diamond ring while the scoreboard popped the question.
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith
Sometimes the best, most romantic proposals are completely unplanned. Will Smith took himself completely unawares when he proposed to Jada Pinkett-Smith. Explaining the proposal to People Magazine he said “We were just lying there, going to sleep. I looked over at her, and I said, ‘Hey, we might be real good married. Wassup? You wanna marry me?’ Unplanned. No ring. Not the classic proposal. She said yes.” Not going to lie, we would have said yes too.
Kate Middleton and Prince William
There’s nothing quite like a fairytale romance! Sometimes, with proposals, it’s all about the location. Whilst on a safari in Kenya, at a log cabin he’s been visiting for years, Prince William asked his then-girlfriend to become his wife and, by extension, England’s future Queen. Her breathtakingly beautiful sapphire engagement ring originally belonged to the late-Princess Diana. William was committed to using his mother’s ring as a way of “keeping her sort of close to it all” and honoring his mother.
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank
Another royal proposal with a rare sapphire engagement ring. Equally as stunning and scenic, Jack Brooksbank proposed to Princess Eugenie on New Year’s Day 2018 whilst they watched the sunset over a lake in Nicaragua. Her ring heroes a rare light pink sapphire surrounded by diamonds. Brooksbank told BBC he chose the rare stone because “it changes color from every different angle that you look at it, which is what I think of Eugenie. She changes color, and it’s just so amazing.”
Pink and Carey Hart
It’s no secret that we love it when women pop the question. Never one to be hemmed in by traditional expectations, Pink proposed to Hart, a motorcycle racer, during a competition. She stood on the sidelines holding a whiteboard that read “will you marry me?”. When Hart continued the lap she wrote “I’m serious!”, seeing that Hart immediately dropped out of the race and ran over to kiss his future wife and accept her proposal.
George and Amal Clooney
When George Clooney made the incredible decision to propose to renowned barrister Amal, the scenes were like something out of a romantic comedy. Clooney had planned everything out beautifully. He hid the ring in a box behind her, he cooked dinner and he had his Aunt Rosemary Clooney’s music (yes, they’re related) playing however everything went wrong when Amal went to do the dishes, something Clooney says she never does. He scrambled. He blew out the candle and told her to look in the box behind her for a lighter then, as Clooney described to Ellen DeGeneres ‘she turns around, pulls out the box—I’ve got the ring in there—she pulls it out, looks at it and says ‘It’s a ring’—like as if somebody had left it there some other time! … “I got down on my knee and said, ‘I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life without you.’ And she kept looking at the ring, and she was looking at me, and she was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ … it was like 25 minutes. Finally, I literally said, ‘Look, I hope the answer’s yes, but I need an answer. I’m 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon. And she said, ‘Oh, yes.'”
Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard
To end on an overwhelming positive note, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard got engaged over Twitter. The couple met in 2007 and began dating and agreed they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together two years later in 2009, however, the two didn’t feel right getting married until everyone in the United States had the right to do so. In 2013 when the Defense of Marriage Act was struck down Kristen tweeted “@daxshepard will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove” – it most certainly is.
