I have a teenage daughter (as well as a teenager son). In a lot of ways we are exactly alike. We almost shared the same birthday too. She was due on my birthday but ended up having to have my pregnancy induced because she didn’t want to make her “grand appearance” on her due date. She was born two days later. I consider her my belated birthday present.
Raising teenagers is not easy, as I’m sure most parents will agree. I think in this day and age it’s harder to parent teen girls compared to teen boys. I think there is a lot more pressure on teen girls to look a certain way, thanks to social media like Facebook and Instagram.
I’ve always been overweight and it’s been a concern of mine that my kids would follow in my footsteps. I am very grateful that they have not. In fact my daughter is very health conscious. She watches what she eats and goes to the gym in our condo complex a few times per week.
She does eat well but I worry she’s not getting enough vitamins and minerals that her body needs. Even though she’ll be 17 in a couple of weeks her body is still growing.
Did you know that almost 70% of women, on average, are calcium deficient. That number jumps significantly for teen girls (According to a 2010 study published in The Journal of Nutrition). In fact 86% of teenage girls do not get enough calcium in their daily diets. That is something that I am concerned about with my daughter. She does enjoy yogurt but other than that she’s not really into dairy products which are an excellent source of calcium.
Did you know that 95% of bone building happens by the age of 20? I didn’t. That gives me pause for concern for both of my children (although my son does enjoy dairy products).
Teens have to start banking calcium early because they will lose it slowly later in life. When I stared this fact with my daughter she became very concerned that she’s not going to have enough calcium in her body and will end up with health issues later on in life. This was a real “eye opener” for her.
I also worry about my bone health. Every women in my family end up shrinking A LOT. I know part of it has to do with old age but I also know that osteoporosis runs in my family. My mom used to have to take medication because of it. I don’t want that to happen to me. I wish I can enjoy dairy but my stomach is sensitive to many dairy products. I can eat aged cheeses and some yogurts but things like milk, creams and some ice creams don’t sit well with me.
Osteoporosis occurs when your body doesn’t get enough calcium and it starts to take it away from your bones. I didn’t know that. I knew calcium was needed for healthy bones but I didn’t know that my body would take away calcium from my bones if it’s not getting what it needs. That is a scary thought.
Another interesting thing I learned about calcium is that its not just for you bones – your muscles (including the heart) and nerves need calcium to function properly. Did you know that?
So what do you do when you don’t like or can’t process dairy products – how do you get the calcium your body needs? Since your body does not make calcium (it has to be delivered by an outside source) the best way is with a supplement.
Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews are the #1 doctor recommended calcium supplement chew. Not only that they taste delicious which makes it easy to remember to take them each day (who doesn’t want a piece of chocolate?). Just two yummy Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews taken daily provides 100% of the daily value of calcium for most women plus vitamins D3 & K (other vitamins your body needs).
I was sent two containers of Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews for myself and for my daughter as part of the Viactiv Yours & Hers: Build Strong Bones Together campaign. My daughter was relieved to learn that they are delicious flavored chews and not pills. She hates having to swallow pills. The chews are much easier. Plus the delicious flavor makes her WANT to take them every morning. Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews are available in delicious milk chocolate and caramel flavors.
I also received a beautiful frame to fill with photos of me and my daughter. Currently my frame doesn’t have photos in it. That is because when we had planned on moving we packed up A LOT of our stuff to make our condo less “busy” and moved a good chunk of our stuff to my father’s basement upstate (we were going to move upstate). Since we didn’t move we have had to go into is basement and look for the stuff we want and bring it back home with us. I have been finding boxes of photos and photos albums each time we pay my father a visit. Currently I don’t have the photos in mind for the frame but I did find a few on my computer of my daughter and me.
My daughter is excited about taking the chews. When she heard about having to “bank” calcium now so that she has enough her body needs for later in life she has been cognizant of how much calcium her body gets. She’s been trying to get more dairy in her diet and eating foods that contain calcium, like Salmon (she LOVES salmon so that has been easy for her). She’s also doing more exercises at the gym using weights to strengthen her bones (she used to only use the treadmill and elliptical machines).
It helps that each chew is individually wrapped. I just put two on the counter for her in the morning so she doesn’t forget when she’s rushing around getting read for school. She does the same for me on the weekends.
Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews are readily available at places like Walmart, Rite Aid, CVS, Target, Walgreens and Drugstore.com.
