Check out the beautiful, handcrafted jewelry, from Carolyn Hearn Designs

I love jewelry – especially the sparkly kind.

Growing up I was very much a “Tom boy.” I played with my Tonka trucks more than I did my Barbie dolls.

Even as an adult I honestly don’t care about designer bags or owning a different pair of shoes for every outfit I own. I’m just a simple girl.

There is one thing that I DO enjoy that some might consider a “girly girl” thing – jewelry! I love jewelry. My husband jokes that he needs to get me “blinders” to keep me from seeing all the sparkly jewelry at the jewelry stores in the mall. He jokes that I can’t make it through the mall without stopping to “oooh” and “awww” at the sparkly jewelry.

As much as I do enjoy sparkly diamonds, I don’t really wear them. For me, diamonds are something fancy that you wear on special occasions. I prefer wearing jewelry that I can wear to work, out to run errands, or on a “date” with my husband.

Let me introduce you to the lovely jewelry from Carolyn Hearn Designs. Carolyn Hearn Designs carries jewelry that fits my lifestyle. Her jewelry is exactly the type of jewelry I enjoy – the kind that goes from grocery shopping, to work, and to a night on the town. Her pieces are not only beautiful, but they are very practical and well made.

PHOTO SOURCE: Carolyn Hearn Facebook page

Carolyn Hearn was kind enough to send me some pieces to review. It was very difficult (and that is not an exaggeration) to narrow down what piece of jewelry I wanted to check out in person. She has so many gorgeous pieces on her site.

What I loved about her jewelry is that many of her pieces are infused with essential oils such as Bergamot, Patchouli, Blood Orange, Ying Yang, Pink Grapefruit, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Frankincense Serrata, Clary Sage, Sweet Orange and Thyme, to name a few.

I am a huge fan of essential oils. I have had great experience with them when it comes to helping me to alleviate my mood, energize me and help me unwind and rest at night. I have a nice assortment of oils. I appreciate that Carolyn Hearn has made jewelry already infused with fabulous essential oils.

I was sent to review a “stack” of three individual bracelets known as the “Pure Warrior Stack.”

Here are the details about the bracelet set.

  • Howlite & Lava Stones*
  • Quartz Arrowhead Connector*
  • Stretch
  • Coated in a Protective Sealant
  • Made in the USA
  • *Stones are natural and vary in shape and color

You can purchase the bracelets already infused with essential oils based on your wants/needs. Or you can purchase them without essential oils so you can infuse them with your personal favorites and/or blends.

With this bracelet set you have the choice of Energizing, Tranquility, Invigorating and Meditation (or with no oils). I opted for Invigorating.

My bracelet set came infused with the following essential oils – Sandalwood, Black Pepper and Lemon. These scents are suppose to help promote focus and alertness. These are areas I need help with.

Carolyn Hearn also offers this bracelet with other stones. I opted for the black and white colors because they I wear a lot of black and black and white fits better with my wardrobe.

I have a thick wrist (7.5″ – 8″ depending on the bracelet). These bracelets fit me just fine. They are stretchy enough to fit on my thick wrist without being uncomfortable. They also fit my daughter’s wrist just fine, and she has a small wrist.

I love the arrow head connector/charm. It’s unique. I get a lot of compliments on it.

Please disregard my chubby arm/wrist/hand and wrinkles. Sigh…

They bracelets do have a light scent to them. It’s not overpowering and it’s not like perfume where people passing by will smell it. It’s more for “your nose only,” so to speak. I do get a whiff of the scent when I am wearing the bracelets and I adjust my glasses, pull my hair back or do anything that might draw my wrists up towards my nose. When I am wearing them at my desk I can smell them a bit too as I’m leaning over my keyboard to type.

I enjoy the fragrance. I cannot pin point any specific scent. I just know that combined, it smells delightful. I find myself taking a whiff of my wrist from time to time just to enjoy the fragrance. I do find it invigorating. I’m not sure if it really helps me focus, but I do find it refreshing and it perks me up. That works for me!

If essential oil infused jewelry is not your “thing,” that’s OK. Carolyn Hearn has plenty of other beautiful pieces to choose from in a variety of price points. Also available are other bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Here are a few more examples.

A Basic Guide For Evaluating Colored Gemstones

When it comes to gemstones, diamonds are easily the global favorite. You will find them in necklaces that women pass down through generations, in the all-important engagement rings of hopeful couples, and in many priceless bracelets everywhere. They even have their place in demanding industries that deal with a lot of glass, sturdy polymers and tough metals, since their amazing hardness allows them to cut through basically anything.

However, this immense popularity should not be allowed to overshadow other gemstones out there. In fact, even though diamonds come in several different colors, that is barely a speck of the multitude of colored gemstones out there. If you check out a directory like this one, you can get an idea of the many different varieties there are. So when you come across a colored gemstone, how can you figure out what you are dealing with?

Understand the three basic factors

The three major items in grading the quality of colored gems are the saturation, the color, and the hue of the stone. Let’s take a look at each.

Saturation refers to the interplay of color and grayness. When the inherent “depth” of a given color is dulled down by the presence of gray, we say that the stone lacks saturation.

In other words, a 100% saturated gem would be entirely free of any grayness throughout. This never really occurs in nature; therefore, the closer a gemstone is to this ideal saturation level the more valuable and expensive it will be.

The value and price are further augmented by the accompanying metals and the processing and shaping of the stone. A chart of cuts can give you a comprehensive idea of the various gemstones made appropriate for jewelry.

Colors are classified as primary (yellow, red, and blue) and secondary (orange, purple, and green). This is the typical setup that you see on the color wheel. However, in the natural world, there is a wide prevalence of tertiary colors as well.

A tertiary color is made by overlapping a primary and secondary color. For example, if you mix the primary blue with the secondary green (which in itself is already a mix of blue and yellow), you will typically end up with some shade of turquoise.

Of course, a color can also mix with white, black, or gray. In those cases, we reach for the ideas of saturation and hue, as well as tint.

The hue is the actual “color our eyes perceive”, in other words, the pigment – those primary and secondary ones from earlier. In that sense, white, black, and gray are technically “colors” but they have no “hue”. Believe it or not, this idea has been a philosophical battleground for ages, and you can see that in this comprehensive historical overview: http://www.huevaluechroma.com/071.php

Over the years, some hues grow more popular, more appreciated, and therefore costlier than others. In our day, blue, pink, and red are considered more desirable than yellow or purple, but these attitudes are just a fashion trend. Moreover, they are culturally conditioned, so people from different countries and traditions will have different preferences of gemstone colors.

As an honorary factor, we briefly mentioned tint. A gemstone is said to be tinted if its inherent color is mixed in with some white, making it lighter than usual. By the above logic, tinted stones are less saturated than their “original”, “default” counterparts; and therefore they are less appreciated. The more tinted the gem, the less valuable it will be, in turn making them more affordable.

There are three prestigious exceptions to this rule, where the gemstone’s high value is possible exactly because of the unique hue/ tint ratio. These are the cornflower blue sapphire, the Rhodolite (a sub-type of garnet), and the esteemed Padparadscha sapphire (the rarest, delicate, pink-orange corundum mineral whose name is derived from the color of the lotus).

More can be learned about a colored gemstone, if you look at things like tone, color grade, color zoning, depth, brilliancy, and clarity. These concepts are more advanced, and out of the scope of this crash course, but stick to the basics here and you can find your perfect gemstone for sure.

Anjolee Jewelry Will Take Your Breath Away

I would not consider myself a “girly-girl.” I was very much a “tom boy” growing up. I enjoyed playing with my Tonka trucks as much as I did Barbie dolls, if not more.

Even as a teenager, I wasn’t really into making sure my purse matched my outfit, or spending hours on hair and make-up before going out.

As an adult, I’m content to wear my hair in a messy bun, slip into my favorite t-shirt and leggings, and dare I say, NOT wear make-up. Oh the horror! LOL!

I may not care to own a lot of shoes, or splurge on brand name make-up, but I do like shiny things (“bling”). My husband always makes jokes about how I tend to wonder over to the jewelry stores when we’re at the mall.

I love looking at jewelry. I know that we can never afford any of it, but it doesn’t hurt to look. I also don’t think that I could comfortably wear a diamond ring that cost $20,000+. I would be afraid to leave the house with it.

For years I have wanted a special ring to commemorate my marriage. Often these are referred to as anniversary rings, or eternity bands.

I’ve had a vision in my mind as to what my perfect anniversary ring/eternity band would look like. I have looked online many times (and bookmarked plenty of rings) in hopes of finding “the one,” especially one that is affordable.

Not too long ago I was contacted by a jewelry company called Anjolee. They take their jewelry seriously (more on that later).

Anjolee has been the leader in jewelry manufacturing since 1977, recognized within the industry for fine craftsmanship, attention to detail and superior customer service. They are proud of the service they provide, and the special moments they help to create. Their commitment to building strong relationships with their customers earned Anjolee a top three ranking in Newsweek’s 2018 survey, America’s Best Customer Service.

Anjolee is committed to keeping the environment clean, and they are proud of their innovative and eco-friendly manufacturing facility.

Anjolee fully complies with the federal Kimberly Act of 2003, which requires all American diamond retailers to purchase all diamonds only from manufacturers who have documented proof that they were obtained through legitimate channels.

I like that Anjolee uses diamonds that were legally and ethically sourced.

I took the opportunity to browse through the Anjolee website to check out the jewelry they offer consumers. WOW! They have a beautiful variety of rings, bracelets, earrings and more on their website.

Here are just a few of my favorite finds.

The tennis bracelet with the hearts (pictured above) is GORGEOUS!

What I really liked about the Anjolee website is that they offer you 360 degree views of the jewelry, so you can see it from all angles. I appreciate that because often websites just give you a single view of an item, and I want to see exactly what I am going to get when ordering online.

In addition, Anjolee also shows how the jewelry would look on a person. It’s a computer generated person, but they are very realistic and it does give you a good representation of how the jewelry will look on a person. They also show you different views of the jewelry on the computer generated person including up close and far away.

If a piece of jewelry is available in different metals (yellow gold, rose gold, platinum…), the website often allows you to change the metal color so that you can see what the piece would look like when you compare the various metals.

The above is a great example of what I am talking about. It’s the same bracelet, but the website allows you to see what it would look like using different metals (white gold and yellow gold).

Anjolee offered to send me a piece of jewelry so I could experience shopping on the website, as well as the jewelry. I did not receive a real diamond ring (of course), but honestly, you can’t tell the difference. I was able to fool a lot of people with the ring I received teh review. No one suspected that it wasn’t made with real diamonds. If you order from Anjolee you will received real diamonds and gems.

To say it took me hours to scroll through each page to find the piece of jewelry I wanted to review is an understatement. I was thrilled to find a ring that looks exactly like the anniversary ring/eternity band I had envisioned for myself. Anjolee was so wonderful to re-create that same ring for me to review (using “fake diamonds”). Needless to say I was stalking our delivery guys until the day it arrived.

The ring I selected is called the Supreme Diamond Three Stone Engagement Ring. I know that I’m not getting engaged (I’ve been married close to 23 years), but it’s the ring I have always envisioned on my finger.

I took images off the Anjolee website so that you can get a clearer view of this amazing ring.

I was extremely surprised to see the size of the package I received from Anjolee. I figured since it was a ring, it would come in a small box or envelope. I was very wrong in my assumption.

Anjolee made sure I received my package by having me sign for it. I think that is a wise thing to do, especially when you are shipping valuable jewelry.

What I received was a huge box. I thought for sure that Anjolee sent me the wrong piece of jewelry.

After going through the outer packaging, I found a large, sturdy box inside. When I opened that box (the one pictured above), I found the ring box, neatly tucked away inside the middle of the box, surrounded by a soft sponge-like material. Anjolee even went so far as to make “holes” in the sponge, making it easier to remove the ring box.

I was so excited to open up the ring box.

What Anjolee failed to include were angles singing when I opened the ring box (ha ha). Hearing angels sing “ah ah ahhhhh…” would have been fitting (ha ha).

Inside the ring box was my ring. Not only that, the inside of the box is LIGHTED, which shows off just how sparkly and amazing the ring really is.

WOW! WOW! WOW!!!!

My photos do not do this ring and it’s packaging justice. You have to see them in person to experience their beauty.

The light (as seen above) is a small LED light that turns on every time you open the box.

There is a mark in the center of the box (in the bottom photo). That is not a mark on the box – it’s the LED light.

Even the actual ring box is gorgeous. It’s hard (wood?) and shiny. It even has felt on the bottom of it so as not to scratch any surface it’s placed on. Anjolee really thought of everything.

I have fat, wrinkly, old lady hands. I was reluctant to take a photo with the ring on.

Truly, my photos do NOT do this ring justice. I can’t stop looking at it. It’s wonderful and exactly what I’ve always wanted.

The ring features three large “diamonds” – two the same size and the one in the middle a wee bit larger. Goes down the sides of the ring are smaller “diamonds.” You can see them in the photos (refer to the stock photo from Anjolee, pictured above).

The ring is stunning, and very well made. I have worn it many times and I haven’t lost a stone or had any thing go “wrong” with my ring. It’s just as beautiful as it was the first day I put it on my wrinkly old lady finger (ha ha).

I’m impressed by the quality of Anjolee’s jewelry. I’m also totally impressed by the packaging. What a wonderful presentation.

Interestingly enough, the prices on Anjolee’s website are not that bad. They might be out of my budget, but I think a lot of people can afford their pieces. I found gorgeous pieces for under $1,000.

If you are interested in checking Anjolee out for yourself, visit Anjolee.com. The brand can also be found across social media. All of their links are found on the bottom right of their website.

What do you think about Anjolee’s jewelry? Do you see a piece that you would love to own?

Meaningful Jewelry from Waxing Poetic

Do you enjoy wearing jewelry?

When I was younger (teen, early 20’s) I wouldn’t step foot outside of my home without wearing earrings in all six holes in my ears (three in each), as well as a necklace, bracelets and rings. I had jewelry for every occasion and pieces to match everything in my wardrobe.

Fast forward to when I became a mom. I realized that jewelry wasn’t practical with babies and toddlers. I’ve had so many necklaces broken and earrings pulled out of my ear by my kids.

These days I still wear jewelry, but I’m more selective with what I wear. I tend to wear pieces that have meaning to them. Take for example the necklace that I wear 24/7. It features a heart with the letter “J” engraved on it, an angel wing and the birthstone for the month of March (Aquamarine). The letter “J” is for my brother John who died in a tragic car accident last year. Inside the heart are some of his ashes. John was born in March.

I have another necklace with his ashes in it. It has “Brother” engraved on the outside.

In addition to the necklace I always wear my wedding ring (of course), even though it’s not the original ( long story, my husband is wearing my original wedding ring after his was accidentally ruined). I also wear a few bracelets with things engraved on them (and charms) that all have special meaning to me.

Recently I received to review a beautiful necklace from a company called Waxing Poetic.

Waxing Poetic has been adorning women with our meaningful, versatile jewelry for almost 2 decades.  Their line offers unique ways to mix and match looks with a wide range of charms, pendants, chains, bracelets and more.  Their collections, designed by creative director Patti Pagliei and handcrafted in Bali, focus on our connection to the natural, mystical and spiritual worlds, and how adornment can really express one’s true self.

I was sent to review two charms and a necklace to wear them with.

The necklace and charms were packaged very nicely in an adorable little box. The box has a little drawer that pulls out to reveal the jewelry, complete with an itty bitty knob.

The necklace is really nice. It’s called a Miraculous Chain. I’m not sure exactly what that means. The necklace does have little brass balls about every two inches around the chain. It really adds to the beauty of this necklace. It could have worked with a simple chain too, but I really like the uniqueness of the chain the set comes with. It has a brass/silver look to it.

Here are a few photos. They DO NOT do this lovely necklace justice. It looks a million times better in person.

I am including photos (below) taken from the Waxing Poetic website that were done professionally so that you can get a better look at each piece.

One of the charms I received to review is called Found Again Pendant – Heart & Arrow.

I chose this pendant to review for special reasons.

My brother and I were apart all our lives. It took me 28 years to find him. We have the same mother, but different fathers. He was also adopted out (I was raised by my biological father and paternal grandparents). My brother and I had a year and a half together before he was killed.

I look at the arrows as they represent us. We were apart, we finally got together, then we were apart again.

I also like this pendant because it also reflects me and my husband. There were several times growing up where our paths could have crossed. We truly believe that fate kept trying to get us together, even as children. I see the arrows as us as well. Our paths could have crossed many times.

The other pendant I received is called Ever Tied Heart Charm. This is a two sided charm. One side features two hearts and some rope. The other side features text.

This is another charm I can easily apply to my brother as well as my husband. My brother and I will always have a special bond that can never be broken, and we are forever bound together by not only blood, but also life circumstances. As for my husband, he’s my true love forever. He’s my one and only and there can never be another. We’ve been together 23 years and we’re still going strong.

These charms are available individually, as well as on a necklace featured both charms (Found Again, Ever Tied Heart Necklace).

As you can see, Waxing Poetic offers unique pieces of jewelry that has meaning to it’s wearer. Here are a few more examples.

Waxing Poetic offers consumers necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and more. They have a variety of charms packaged together too. They also offer jewelry accessories.

If you are interested in checking out all of the lovely jewelry available at Waxing Poetic, please visit WaxingPoetic.com. The brand can also be found on social media. All of their links are found at the bottom of their website.

What do you think of the jewelry designs from Waxing Poetic? Is there a piece that stood out to you the most? Feel free to comment and share your thoughts. I always love to hear from readers.

A fashionable way to style your hair

I have a confession. I still use “scrunchy” hair ties. You know the type I am referring to. They are elastic bands wrapped in fabric or similar type of material. I think they were popular in the 90’s, and maybe even the early 2000’s. One is pictured above.

I have hair scrunchies in a variety of colors, patterns and sizes. I tend to use the small black ones the most.

Honestly, all I need is the plain, black elastic bands. The only reason why I use the scrunchies is because I don’t wear them all the time. When I’m not using it I wear it on my wrist, like a bracelet. The plain, black elastic bands are too snug on my wrist and leave marks. The scrunchies are more comfortable to wear.

I tend to pull my hair up throughout the day, especially when I’m in need of a haircut. I pull my hair back when I am eating (so as not to get hair in my food) as well as when I am at work (I have a fear of catching lice from the kids at school).

A brand by the name of Go Girl Designs has taken the plain, black (or white) elastic hair band to a new level – one that turns such a simple object into a fashion accessory.

Go Girl Designs combines fashionable, beautiful bracelets with elastic hair ties.

Take a look at these examples.

At first look these appear to be lovely bracelets in gold, rose gold and silver. Each one features a matching, dangling heart. What you probably don’t notice is that the black lines going through each bracelet is actually an elastic hair band.

With Go Girl Designs you can take hair bands with you where ever you go, without the look of a hair band on your wrist or those annoying indentations they often leave.

If you are like me, elastic hair bands tend to end up all over the place, and they can never be found when you really need one. With Go Girl Designs, you’ll always have an elastic band at your disposal. No one will ever know that you have one. All they’ll see is the beautiful bracelet adorning your wrist.

Go Girl Designs bracelets are available in different styles and colors. Most features black or white elastic bands, but they do have a bracelet with a blue elastic band.

Go Girl Designs know that young girls and ‘tweens also use elastic hair bands. That is why they also carry a line of kid friendly designs as well. Of course women can use them too.

Go Girl Designs also offers just the elastic bands (in a variety of colors), all featuring the adorable little dangling heart charm. That way you can use a hair band to match what you are wearing. It’s also great to have extras just in case you do happen to lose one or they break. Sometimes elastic bands lose their shape after being used many times.

Go Girl Designs sent me a couple of bracelets to try out for myself. Sadly, my hand is too thick/wide to fit over my hand. I can’t wear the bracelets, but I can use the elastic bands. My daughter, thankfully, can wear the bracelets, so I gave them to her. She works as a waitress at a local restaurant, so she has to keep her hair pulled back. She’s been able to put these bracelets to good  use.

Not only are these bracelets practical, they also make great gifts.

For more information about Go Girl Designs, visit GoGirlDesign.com. You can also find the brand on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You can find their links on the bottom of their website.

What do you think about Go Girl Designs? Would you want one of these bracelets for yourself?
