If you happen to follow me on Twitter, you might have noticed that I was promoting, and participating in, a Twitter party to celebrate the release of the new film Breaking In. The Twitter party was hosted by Black Girl Nerds (@BlackGirlNerds). If you missed the Twitter party you can check out what people were talking about by looking up the hashtag #BreakingInMovie. It was a fun Twitter party. I especially liked the question about the songs to add to a play list for the title character Shaun, played by Gabrielle Union.
Shaun’s father was killed when he was hit by a car. Shaun and her father didn’t have the best relationship. It’s up to Shaun to take care of his father’s estate, which means selling his house in the country.
Shaun and her two children, Jasmine and Glover, head to her father’s house for the weekend so she can get everything in order so that it could be sold. Her husband was unable to go with them.
Upon arrival, Shaun and her children check out the house. The house has a high tech security system making it almost impenetrable.
Unbeknownst to them, they are not alone in the house.
Later on in the evening, Shaun steps outside to make a phone call. That is when she discovers that there are others in the house. Inside with her children are four criminals – Eddie, Same, Peter, and Duncan. To make things even worse, the criminals have locked Shaun out of the house. She has no way to get inside to rescue her children. Or can she find a way? After all, there is not much that can come between a mother and her children.
Why are the criminals there? What do they want? What are their plans with Jasmine and Glover? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Breaking In, which is now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital.
There are bonus features worth checking out with this film including an alternate opening. Other bonus features include commentary with the film’s director (James McTeigue) and writer (Ryan Engle), a behind the scenes look at the film (these are always my favorite bonus features) and deleted/extended scenes.
Admittedly I haven’t had a chance to watch the bonus features yet, but I am planning on checking them out like I normally do.
What I loved about this film is that Gabrielle Union’s character, Shaun, is portrayed as a strong woman who did not go down without a fight. She could have easily ran off in hopes of finding help to rescue her children, but she didn’t. She stood her ground and didn’t back away from the men who were so ruthless, that they planned on killing her children.
I think there should be more film’s where the women are portrayed as strong and able bodied. Gone are the days of helpless, dainty little wallflowers. Today’s women are strong, smart and totally able to kick a$$ if need be.
Gabrielle Union was an excellent choice to play the role of Shaun. I cannot think of a better actress.
The child actors were excellent too. I like that the actress that played Shaun’s daughter, Jasmine (Ajiona Alexus) looked a lot like Union in real life.
I don’t necessarily consider this a “chick flick.” My husband is a “manly-man” and he enjoyed this film. It kept both of our attention the entire length of the film – from start to finish. My husband’s only negative (sort of) comment about the film is that he wished that there was more to the ending.
The film is rated PG-13. I really don’t recall any foul language, and there is certainly no sex or nudity. I think it gets it’s rating for the violence (not that it’s that violent). I would caution showing this film to young children. You wouldn’t want them to be worried about someone locking themselves inside your home.
To learn more about the film you can check it out on Facebook and Twitter. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #BreakingInMovie too.
