Now available on streaming (Paramount+), and on digital on January 8, 2023, is the epic true story, Devotion.
Devotion stars Jonathan Majors (Creed II), Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Christina Jackson (Outsiders), Thomas Sadoski (The Newsroom) and Joe Jonas.
The film was directed by JD Dillard, and it was based off the book by the same name (Devotion:An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice) by author Adam Makos.
Directed by JD Dillard (Sweetheart, Sleight), Jonathan Majors (“Creed III”) and Glen Powell (TOP GUN: MAVERICK) star in the true story of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots who helped turn the tide in the most brutal battle in the Korean War: Jesse Brown, the first Black aviator in Navy history and his fellow fighter pilot and friend, Tom Hudner. Their heroic sacrifices and enduring friendship would ultimately make them the Navy’s most celebrated wingmen. Additional cast include Christina Jackson (“Swagger”), Thomas Sadoski (“The Newsroom”) and Joe Jonas (The Jonas Brothers, DNCE).
I am not a fan of movies about wars. I honestly don’t know why. Maybe it’s because they are often violent (even though I’m a fan of horror films), or maybe it’s because war is a real thing, and people I know have lived through them (my father was in Vietnam and my grandfather was in WWII in the Navy).
I watched the trailer for this film, and it piqued my interest. So even though I am not a fan of war films, I took a chance on this one. I’m glad I did.
This story is incredible, especially knowing that it’s based off real life, or should I say historical events.
The acting is amazing. The film makers couldn’t have casted this film any better. All of the actors involved brought their “A game” to this film. I was even surprised by Joe Jonas. I didn’t know he was an actor. I know his brother Nick is, but I didn’t know it was a family thing. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well he can act too.
The cinematography really brought this film to life. The battles scenes were so good that they scared me. I don’t know how people can fly planes like that. I swear that I felt like I was right there in the air with them. The cinematography is THAT good.
This film is about the Korean War. I never learned about it in school. We learned about the Civil War, WWI and WWII, and Vietnam, but to my recollection, we never learned about the Korean War.
According to Wikipedia;
The Korean War (also known by other names) was fought between North Korea and South Korea from 1950 to 1953. The war began on 25 June 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea following clashes along the border and rebellions in South Korea. North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union while South Korea was supported by the United States and allied countries. The fighting ended with an armistice on 27 July 1953.
I wonder why our school never covered it in class. Did YOU learn about this war?
Seeing this film made me more interested in learning more about this war, and why it happened. I assume this is the reason why North and South Korea are still against one another. I’m also a fan of K-dramas and K-pop (K-horror films too, if that’s a thing).
This film was actually out in theaters a few months ago. I wonder why it never went mainstream. I never heard about this film until I was offered a screener link to review it. It deserves to be nominated for some kind of an award, especially best actor and supporting actor.
If you loved the Top Gun films, you will definetly enjoy this film. It has the same look and feel to it, except the battle is different.
This story also has a lot to do with race and color. I won’t dive too deeply into it, but Jesse Brown was African American, and back then he faced prejudice due to the color of his skin. People seemed more focused on that then his amazing ability to fly a plane.
Below is the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.

I’d like to win this prize because I’ve enjoyed Glen Powell in other movies.
I’d like to win because I love movies and haven’t seen this yet.
I enjoyed watching Top Gun: Maverick and am interested in this film as well. Air combat is something I am excited about.
