Now available on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital is the award winning animated film, Soul.
Soul won for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Score at the 78th Golden Globe Awards.
Soul features the voice talents of Tina Fey, Jamie Foxx, Angela Basset, Phylicia Rashad, John Ratzenberger, Daveed Diggs, to name a few.
Joe Gardner (Foxx), is a middle school music teacher. It is not his “dream job.” He’s always dreamed of being a famous jazz musician, but he was forced to take a job to pay the bills. He still dreams of becoming a famous jazz musician one day, even though his own mother is against it.
One day, Joe is fortunate to get an audition with a legendary jazz singer, Dorothea Williams (Basset). She is impressed by him and offers him a chance to perform at one of their gigs that evening.
Joe leaves the club on “cloud nine” – unaware of his surroundings. He accidently falls into an open manhole and falls to his death.
Joe does not realize he’s dead at first. It’s not until he realizes that he’s heading off to the “great beyond” up an escalator to heaven. In his attempt to escape, Joe finds himself down below in a place called the “great before.” The “great before” is where souls originate from before they head down to Earth.
It’s in the “great before” that Joe meets a soul, simply known as 22 (Fey). She has been stuck in the “great before” for a very long time. She refuses to get all her badges so that she can head down to Earth.
Posing as someone else, Joe is assigned to mentor 22 to help her discover a “spark” that will help her to live a happy and productive life on Earth. Joe soon finds out that 22 has no desire at all to be Earth bound – ever.
By accident, 22 and Joe do end up back on Earth, however, 22 ends up in Joe’s body and Joe ends up in the body of a therapy cat.
Somehow Joe needs to find a way to be returned to his own body, and get 22 back to the “great before.” But that is not going to be easy. Joe will find that he has a lot of “soul searching” to do (no pun intended). And 22 needs to figure out why she is so reluctant to live a life on Earth.
Will either Joe or 22 find happiness, either here on Earth, the “great before” or the “great beyond?” To find out, you need to purchase or rent Soul. Look for it where ever movies are sold or rented.
I had the opportunity to watch the film because I subscribe to Disney+
This is an amazing film. I honestly didn’t think I was gong to like it at first. Even my husband showed no interest in it initially, but after a few minutes, we were both engrossed into the film.
I love just about everything in this film – the spectacular animation, the wonderful storyline, and the fun characters. I even went to so far as to look up Soul related merchandise. There is a plush 22 doll that lights up that I need to add to my toy collection.
I would consider this a “family friendly” film, but it might be a little too “deep” for young children to comprehend. However, they will certainly enjoy the adorable 22 character, as well as Joe’s therapy cat.
You can still catch Soul on Disney+, if you happen to subscribe to the streaming service.
You can also follow the film on social media, such as Facebook and Twitter.
