Our blind cat Callie.
I’m the “mom” to eight crazy cats. Yes, you read that right – eight. To say I’m a “crazy cat lady” is an understatement. Ha Ha.
All eight of our cats have different personalities. It’s interesting because they are cats, not people. You wouldn’t think that cats being raised in the same home would have very different personalities. One is extremely sweet but shy. Another has the nickname “menace” for a reason. One is afraid of her own shadow, yet another comes racing to greet to greet anyone who comes into our home, including plumbers and handymen.
I do have a couple of cats that we feel are a bit too anxious. In fact, our blind cat “stress licks” her legs so bad that they are almost bald on the inside of her back legs. Even the vet confirmed that she stress licks. When we adopted her the shelter told us she was stress licking herself too much too. I guess it’s something innate in her. She was found tossed in a dumpster with her back shaved clear to the skin. Who knows what abuse she faced before we adopted her. My poor little girl.
Another one of our cats seems a bit too frazzled too. In fact, she tends to viciously go after the blind one for no reason whatsoever. She never used to. She only started to do that after another cat, who was like a surrogate mother to her, died (cancer), as well as another good friend/playmate of hers, another one of our cats passed away (heart attack). Once those two cats passed away she started to attack the blind one.
We’ve tried those pheromone plugins that are supposed to bring a sense of calm to your cats, but we didn’t notice a difference. Not only that, they are very pricey.
Recently I was sent an interesting product from the brand Chill Paws to try out with my cats.
Chill Paws formulates treats, balm, drops, and other products, including full-spectrum CBD oil, so pets get all the benefits from the hemp plant. The hemp used is grown in the USA and lab-tested to prove the quality of every batch. You can rest easy knowing your fur buddy is getting the highest-quality CBD products to help them chillax!
I was sent to review the brands CBD Oil Pet Balm.
- Made with organic ingredients
- Made in the USA
- Derived from industrial hemp
- 3rd- Party Lab-tested
According to the brand (PHOTO SOURCE: ChillPaws.com).
I wasn’t sure if this product was safe for cats, but as per the brand, it is.
All of our cats are indoor cats, so their paws never get dry. Their noses do get dry from time to time (especially with the dry air due to winter weather and the heat in our home).
We recently took our blind cat to the vet due to a sore around her mouth that wasn’t healing. The vet told us that she has allergies and dermatitis. We’ve noticed flakes on her fur, but a couple of our other cats have them too. We assume it was just something they picked up from their pet bedding (even though we clean them regularly). The vet said it was her dandruff. He said her skin is very dry, and prescribed a topical medication as well as gave her an injection.
I figured she would be the best cat to try the Chill Paws CBD Oil Pet Balm on. She stress licks and has dry, irritated skin.
I’ve been using it sparingly on the inside of her legs. I’ve only been doing specific spots to test it out, the same way you would if you were doing a patch test on hair coloring. I wanted to make sure she didn’t have any negative reactions. Not only that, I didn’t want to slather it on such a large area. I figured I would start with smaller areas first, then move on to another small area and so forth.
So far, so good, as far as I can tell. I don’t thinks he likes the taste of it. When she goes to lick we’ve notice her pausing and then stopping. She does it out of habit, but I guess the balm is preventing her from actually licking the inside of her legs. If anything I hope the balm helps her to break that habit and perhaps find better outlets for her anxiety and stress.
It’s too early to tell if it’s healing her skin. Hair grows back slowly, and the flakes are more so on her back, not her inner legs.
No one has a dry nose as of late, so I haven’t been able to test it out on a nose.
If anything it’s helping her to stop a bad habit. If the ingredients are helping to nourish her skin, even better.
If only I had a reason to apply the balm to the other cat mentioned above, in hopes it would keep her from going after the blind one. We’ll see…
