Available today (May 7, 2019) is the sequel to the popular LEGO Movie, appropriately called LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. The movie is available on all platforms (4K UHD Combo Pack, Blu-ray combo pack, DVD and digital).
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part features the voice talents of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Charlie Day, Alison Brie, Nick Offerman, and Will Ferrell, who reprise their roles. New cast members include Tiffany Haddish, Stephanie Beatriz and Maya Rudolph.
Is everything still awesome in Bricksburg, as it was when the first movie ended? Not exactly. Emmet is still the same happy-go-lucky characters with an optimistic outlook on life, but the same can’t be said about the other characters in Bricksburg, including Lucy, Metalbeard, Benny and the adorable Unikitty.
Things look a lot different in Bricksburg. It’s not longer a vibrant, colorful, happy place to live. Now it looks like a post-apocalyptic wasteland. That is because Bricksburg was invaded by LEGO Duplo characters (aliens).
Everyone in Bricksburg has developed a tougher “skin” due to their current situation, all except Emmet. He doesn’t share the same “doom and gloom” mentality as his friends. This really bothers Lucy too. She thinks Emmet needs to “grow up” in a sense and realize that things are NOT awesome anymore.
One day Emmet’s friends are taken hostage and whisked away be General Mayhem to the Systar System, where Batman will be forced to marry Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi, who is the ruler of the Systar System. The Queen wants to marry Batman in hopes that it will join the two realms together.
Now is the perfect time for Emmet to prove himself as he attempts to rescue his friends. He can’t do it on his own, so he joins Rex Dangervest (also voiced by Pratt) to assist him in the rescue, as well as to mentor him so that he can be the tough guy that Lucy wants him to be. Rex is a combination of other Chris Pratt characters. He even has a crew of Velociraptors.
Things are made even harder when the Queen scatters Emmet’s friends to different planets, each with it’s own unique characters and challenges.
Throughout the movie there are live action sequences between Finn (the young “real” boy from the first movie) and his little sister Bianca. The siblings are fighting over his LEGOS and her LEGO Duplo Blocks. Even though they are both made by LEGO, they are different types of blocks (which explains a lot of this movie).
Will Emmet become the man that Lucy wants him to be? Can he save his friends and stop the wedding before it’s too late? And what about Finn and Bianca? Can they find a way to play with their blocks peacefully, and together? To find out, you need to pick up a copy of The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. Look for it where ever movies are sold or rented.
Just like the first film, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is filled with toe-tapping, catchy songs. They will get stuck in your head, on an endless loop, for days – just like the songs from the first film (even writing this I have “Everything is Awesome” playing over and over again in my head). Two songs that stood out to me in this film (and played over and over again in my head) are “Catchy Song” and “Super Cool.”
I enjoyed seeing the beloved characters from the first film come back for the second one. I think all the characters work really well together. It just wouldn’t be the same movie it there wasn’t an Emmet, Lucy, Batman or Unikitty.
There was a lot more screen time with the real-life characters (Finn and Bianca). I think many people can relate to their sibling rivalry and bickering. I think older siblings will be able to relate to having an annoying younger sibling getting into their stuff and messing things up.
I know it was a vital part of the story (the “battle” between Finn and Bianca), but I could have done with a little less “human” screen time and more of the LEGO characters. After all, it’a a LEGO movie, so you’d like to see more of the LEGO characters.
Overall my husband and I enjoyed the film. Our kids had other plans when we watched the movie. I’m sure they’ll watch it on their own time when they have a chance. Both of us agree that it’s not as “awesome” as the first film, but it’s still a lot of fun none-the-less.
There are plenty of bonus features worth checking out.
