When it comes to my children they are like night and day – literally! They are polar opposites of one another. Even something as simple as brushing their teeth shows how different the truly are.
My daughter, who has braces and a palate extender, brushes her teeth FOREVER! She must take 5+ minutes – or longer – to brush her teeth. I think that is great! She’s never had a cavity and the dentist always comments on how clean her teeth always look, even with braces.
My son on the other hand feels he can do a good enough job by brushing his teeth for a split second. OK, not literally, but we have seen him brush for just a few SECONDS and consider his teeth brushed. Of course that means a battle will erupt when we force him back into the bathroom to brush his teeth again.
We have tried many things for him including an egg timer, a clock and even having him sing to himself (in his head). Nothing works. It’s very frustrating!
I recently learned about Firefly toothbrushes. The fun and unique thing about the Firefly is that when you touch the base a light flashes on the toothbrush and doesn’t go off until the right amount of time has passed for your child to do a good job brushing their teeth. You press it once for the top teeth (1 minute) and again for the bottom teeth (another minute) Of course I just had to try this with our son.
We got Fireflys for both of my kids, even though my daughter does a good job. She thought it was cute and would press the button for her top teeth and then press again for her bottom teeth. But she’s big on brushing her teeth for a long time so she would just keep pressing the button. Honestly I don’t worry about her. She always does a good job.
My son actually went and brushed his teeth the moment we took it out of the package. I was shocked! And he went right into the bathroom and brushed his teeth after dinner too (even though he does it before bed time). THANKFULLY the Firefly seems to be working. He’s been in the bathroom for a decent amount of time brushing his teeth. Sometimes he forgets to press the button so we need to remind him. But over all he has been doing A LOT better since using the Firefly.
I am so glad we got the Firefly for him. I’m relieved that I know he’s doing a better job and we have haven’t really had to fight with him about brushing his teeth now.
