2021 was a year for many breakout stars in the hip-hop scene. So many rappers are entering the scene and this short article will highlight some of them. Below is a list from the hip-hop promo company of the 5 breakout rappers who really stood out this year.
Flo Milli
Alabama native Flo Milli had an exceptional 2021. She is part of a crop of young, confident female rappers making headway in a genre that has been undervalued and underrepresented for some time.
Flo Milli’s unique voice and punchy, bouncy rap style has gained her a lot of attention and a large following. Her hit single ‘Roaring 20s’ was the highlight of her 2021, and she has also been highly sought after to feature with other artists like Rich The Kid, Tobi and Rubi Rose.
The Kid Laroi
At just 18 years of age, Australian rapper The Kid Laroi had arguably the most popular song of 2021, the mega hit ‘Stay’. It was a collaboration with Justin Bieber, no less. The song went viral when it hit TikTok and gained so much popularity it topped charts all summer.
The young star has been making music since he was 13, recording on his mother’s iPod and uploading on SoundCloud. He had a breakout when his track about the social media influencer Addison Rae gained her attention and engagement. He rode the wave of that spotlight into a collaboration with the late great Juice WRLD with the chart topper ‘Go’.
Yung Bleu
Yung Bleu may not be particularly new to the game, add he had his debut way back in 2013, but he had really stepped up in 2021 and his explosion into stardom this year is proof of that. Collaborations with some of the biggest names in hip hop, such as his feature on Drake’s hit album ‘Certified Lover Boy’ and a cosign with Columbia Records through Boosie Badazz’s Music Syndicate are the fruits of all the work Yung Bleu has put in.
His debut 2021 album ‘Moon Boy’ peaked at number 12 in Billboard’s 200 chart, and he also had a hit single ‘Baddest’ with Chris Brown and 2 Chainz which hit number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Coi Leray
Born in Boston and raised in New Jersey, rapper Coi Leray is another artist who has had a few years under get belt but really turned it up in 2021. Two big singles, ‘No More Parties’ (remixed with Lil Durk) and the Pooh Shiesty featuring ‘Big Purr (prrdd) have been highlights. Her major hit this year however has been the catchy bop ‘TWINNEM’ which went viral on TikTok.
Coi Leray had shown an impressive range of abilities, from smooth, rap-infused R&B melody, to catchy, quick rhymes.
Bizzy Banks
Brooklyn drill rapper Bizzy Banks is a riding star emulating the path of dearly departed Pop Smoke, with who he had relations. A song they did together was on Pop’s posthumous album.
Bizzy is a promising act on the New York drill scene that combines Old and New School styles very well, with influence from artists like Fabolous and Juelz Santana. Of course, there were many artists that had massive breakouts this year, and the hip-hop scene has a lot to look forward to from 2022 and beyond.
