Holiday Gifts

I know it’s a bit too early to think about Christmas and Hanukkah. After all, the kids haven’t even gone trick or treating yet. Some stores are already set up for the holiday season. Not too long ago I was at our local dollar store to pick up some paper plates and pretty little Christmas tree ornaments on the wall NEXT to plastic skeletons. Sigh…

Christmas doesn’t seem the same as it did when our kids were little. Now that they are teenagers/young adults, they don’t get as excited about seeing Santa or waking up extra early because they are anxious to see what gifts are waiting for them under the tree.

This year I plan on getting them more practical gifts. For example, our daughter needs a new car battery and an oil change. We’ll take care of that for her. Our son actually said he prefers gift cards to his favorite stores, so we might just do that as well.

Ideally I’d love to have a gift the whole family will enjoy. If we can find a way to afford it I’d like to take my family to see the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. We’ve gone twice before over the years and we all loved it. My whole family would like to do that again.

These days I am going to give gifts to my family and friends that not only mean something, or gifts that can make a difference in the lives of others. How is that possible you ask? I’ll tell you.

The 2016 World Vision Gift Catalog contains more than 250 poverty-fighting gifts, ranging in price from $16 to $39,000, that improve the quality of life for struggling children and families in the U.S. and around the world.

There are several options available – one where you can donate the gift that will go to people in need, or purchase a tangible gift that you can give to a loved one (or keep for yourself).

One thing you can gift a family in need are animals. You can select what type of animal you would like to help “purchase,” such as chickens to help provide food and income (selling the extra eggs), dairy cow (for milk) or an Alpaca for it’s wool (to keep a family warm and for income). You don’t actually get the animals. The funds are used to purchase the animals and they are donated where they are most needed.

You can also gift other items in need such as diapers, school supplies, food and more. These are the types of gifts that have meaning to them and make a difference in the lives of others.

You can also purchase an actual gift that you’ll receive from their online catalog. You can keep the item for yourself or give it to a loved one.

All gift purchases are also tax deductible. The amount you can declare is shown on the product page.

Tree of Life Votive Holder – This lovely votive holder is handmade from cast-off materials. Artisans in India work hard to raise themselves out of poverty and help light the way for their children’s education. $65

I have this votive holder in my living room. I put a flameless candle inside of it. It looks beautiful when the candle is on. I love how the light dances through the design. It really does look like a tree when it’s lit up. It’s so beautiful!

Upcycled Artisanal Bowl – This stunning bowl is up-cycled from reclaimed industrial waste such as wires and metal. Artisans in India have hand bent and soldered each piece into inspirational shapes to create this artistic and elaborate bowl that is great as a decorative piece or to hold special items. $135

This bowl is not as bit as it appears, but it’s still lovely none the less. It’s a nice size to serve as a centerpiece on your table, or you can use it in your bedroom to hold make up, night creams or other small objects.

I plan on using this as a centerpiece on our dining room table. I might add some fruits on it (make it a fruit bowl). I haven’t decided yet. Right now I have a Halloween centerpiece on my table, so I might not use this until Christmas (place Christmas ornaments on it) or until after the holiday season.

History’s First Coffee Blend – Citrus and chocolate pair up in this 10-ounce whole bean blend of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and Sumatra Permata Gayo coffees from farmers who are overcoming poverty with their earnings. An olivewood scoop and African bag complete the package. $75

This makes a nice cup of coffee. The coffee has a lot of flavor.

I currently don’t find the package I received on the site, but I do see other coffee gifts.

Turquoise Medallion Necklace – Handmade by families in Delhi, this brightly-beaded medallion necklace adds a bold pop of color to any outfit. $75

This is a beautiful necklace. It’s very unique in it’s appearance. I have never seen anything like it before.

The necklace is not something I would normally wear – but – I know someone who would LOVE this and I know would wear it often (a relative). I plan on keeping this to give as a holiday gift.

Royal Silk Scarf – This gorgeous silk scarf adds color to the holidays and supports the needs of children and families worldwide. The luxurious silk is woven by Vietnam’s Ma Chau villagers, who receive sustainable income through their craft. $95

I”m not much of a scarf wearer – but my daughter is. She LOVES this scarf and she can pull off wearing it with many of her outfits. This scarf is colorful so it matches with a lot of things that she wears.

This fashionable scarf can be worn year round, but it’s not meant to keep you warm, per say. It’s more so for fashion.

I love this bracelet/cuff! It’s beautiful! Look at the beautiful design.

I have a thick wrist, and this fits me just fine.

You can wear this to the office/work as well as on a night on the town. It can go from casual to dressy with no problem.

I have received many compliments on this bracelet/cuff. It’s a substantial piece that will get noticed whenever you wear it.
