A long time ago I reviewed a product called Black Belt Goals. You can read the original review here, https://www.shescribes.com/2010/01/black-belt-goals-giveaway.html (that giveaway is no longer open).
The company has since gone on to grow and prosper since my review. The product is now called Goal Bandz. Goal Bandz can be used with children, teens and adults alike.
Goal Bandz are colorful silicon bracelets that are available in small, medium and large sizes.
The idea of Goal Bandz is similar to Karate. As you master a specific skill level (goal) you earn a colored belt (or band in the case of the Goal Bandz). Each time you master another set of skills you aquire a new belt (band) color. In Karate the end goal is to obtain a black belt. In Goal Bandz you get a black bracelet, instead of a black belt, when you achieve your goals.
The idea of Goal Bandz, in my opinion, is open for interpretation. You can “play” the way as directed with the product, or you can make up your own rules.
Let’s use excercise as an example. I need to get more excersie into my day. Walking is what I plan on doing until my husband and I can figure out if we are going to purchase equipment or not. For the sake of this example let’s say I have a goal of walking an hour per day. You can use the bracelets either to show your progression, or to show that you achieved each day’s goal.
The first color is yellow. I could “reward” myself with the yellow bracelet if I walk an hour that day, or I can reward myself with the bracelet if I walked a specific amount that I sent for myself that day, like 10 minutes the first day, 20 minutes the next day, 30 minutes the following day and so forth.
The idea is to change the color of the bracelet you are wearing as a reminder to either do what needs to be done to reach your ultimate goal, similar to tying a string around your finger so you don’t forget something important. Or the bracelets can be visual reminders that you are in the process of reaching your goal and need to take the necessary steps daily to achieve your goals.
My son and I used them back when I did my initial review. I have to admit that I haven’t touched my bracelets in a while, however my son still uses his. I see him wearing the bracelets a lot. He wears the different colors and it appears that he goes in the correct color sequence. Since our son is not one to open up and express himself (much to our dismay) I don’t pressure him into telling me why he’s wearing the bracelet. He knows how to use them so I can only assume that he is setting goals for himself and using them to help track his progress or to keep him on track. I don’t see him wearing the black one much. He seems “stuck” on the first few colors. I know he has them all because he keeps them in a little box on his dresser. Perhaps one day I’ll get him to explain to me why he wears them from time to time. It’s certainly not a fashion thing because he wears them in color sequence and they don’t always match what he’s wearing.
If the Goal Bandz can make that much of an impression on my son then I think the deserves a two thumbs up from me. Anything that will encourage my child (or myself) to work towards achieving goes is great in my book. At only $3.99 a set (6 bracelets) it’s a great way to help your child set goals for themselves (better grades, using the potty, keeping their room clean) as well as yourself (exercise, drinking water, work related goals).

We would use the bands to help organize our home. Each time we keep a room clean for a specified length of time, or each time we accomplish all the tasks for the day, week, etc, we could get a new band. We could aim for a black band every week!
