Many people choose to use their garages as a dumping ground for tools, appliances, furniture and clothes. The end result is the garage ends up becoming cluttered. You can declutter your garage and turn it into a tidy area by getting rid of your unwanted items.
However, in order to do so, you will need to follow certain organizational and storage tips. Here we will help you declutter your garage in a quick and easy manner.
Steps to Organize Your Garage
You can reset your garage by organizing and cleaning it in an efficient manner. However, cleaning the garage is not easy. If it were, then everyone would have a clean and tidy garage.
As you go through your things you will come across old, discarded and musty items. A junk removal company can help expedite the cleaning process. You should be able to find a reputable company in your area.
They will come to your home and remove all of your unwanted items from your garage. You can rent a bin and throw any undesirable items into it for convenient removal. Many unwanted items can be recycled if you want to help do your part for the environment.
Or, if you want to give your old items a new home, then you can donate them to a local charity. Another option is to sell your old items via a garage sale. You can also sell your items online via local classified websites, or online auction sites.
You should begin with a detailed plan regarding the area which needs to be covered. Having a detailed plan will help make the decluttering process much easier to complete. Set a schedule and ensure that you will have the time required in order to meet your deadline.
Also, take the time to rest every now and then. Set aside some time to go out, have a snack and go for a walk or jog in order to get some fresh air. The weekends may serve as a good time to get your chores done, and decluttering your garage is no exception.
Decluttering your garage will involve a few steps. First, any items that you deem unnecessary should be removed from your garage. You may need to set aside some bins or storage containers for your used items. Create a separate pile for items that can be salvaged/recycled.
Ill-fitting or old clothes should be donated or sold as soon as possible. If you have children then perhaps you can get them involved in the process. Chores help teach children responsibility and the value of a hard day’s work.
Store unwanted items in the bin and then dispose of them safely. Certain items can serve as fire hazards, such as batteries that may leak and explode. Any waste products that you come across should be handled with care in order to reduce the risk of contamination.
You will need to sort wanted items. After you have finished cleaning your garage you will then need to sort out the garage contents you want to keep. As you do this, put related items together, ready to be stored.
Try to find some space in and around your house that can be used to store similar items. By doing so you will be able to quickly access the items in the future without wasting time.
If you have a label maker then you can label each of your bins according to category. You can purchase a label maker from most supermarkets or hardware stores, and they are very user-friendly.
Utilize Garage Space
If you like to garden then you probably have dozens of garden tools that are strewn about. You can hang all of your gardening tools together by using wall hooks. Wall hooks are affordable and easy to install.
Smaller hand tools can also be stored using your handy wall hooks. If you enjoy working out then you can store your sporting or workout equipment in larger bins. The bins should have a high weight capacity rating in order to store your weights and dumb bells.
You can also use large bins in order to store your children’s toys and games. Shoes can be stored easily by using a mounted rack. Larger tools can be stored by purchasing and installing a compact pegboard.
If you are an engineer or enjoy working on large, experimental projects, then you may have some hazardous materials that you will need to use from time to time. Hazardous materials must be handled with care in order to avoid spills that can cause skin burns.
A storage cabinet can be used for storing hazardous materials. You should also purchase a childproof lock in order to ensure that children and rodents don’t get inside and possibly ingest poisonous substances.
Staying Safe and Healthy
The ongoing pandemic is a stark reminder of the importance of hygiene. Wear masks and gloves before you begin decluttering your garage. Try and keep your garage sanitized, disinfected and clean in order to reduce the risk of illness.
You should also sanitize your garage thoroughly after you have finished removing all of your unwanted items. After you have finished cleaning and decluttering your garage you will need to ensure that clutter is prevented in the future.
Many people have a tendency to keep items for many months or years. Some people take this tendency to an extreme place by hoarding items for several decades. The garage is designed to store vehicles, tools and perhaps some non-perishable food items but not much else.
Once an appliance, electronic gadget or article of clothing is no longer useful in your household, choose one of the following ways to deal with it: recycle, sell, donate, or simply throw it in the garbage.
There are many junk removal companies that are eco-friendly. If you are unsure then simply email or call a local company in order to discuss your unique needs and concerns. Most will provide you with a free, no-obligation quote and consultation.
As for simply throwing out all of your unwanted goods, many items that are thrown out end up in landfills where they will rot for decades, if not centuries. Unless there is no viable alternative, try to avoid throwing undesirable items in the garbage in order to reduce waste accumulation.
Closing Garage Cleaning Tips
Motor oil stains can be eliminated via a wire scrub brush, dish soap and some cat litter. Vinegar can be diluted with some warm water if you want to wipe away any mold in your garage. Bleach can be used instead if you prefer a store-bought alternative.
Garage walls can be cleaned easily from top to bottom by using a sponge mop. Once you have cleaned your walls you can dry them using a flat head mop that includes a microfiber cloth.
If you don’t have much time, then you can speed up the drying process by using a floor fan after you are done mopping your garage.
We hope that our decluttering tips will help you clean up your garage in record time, and without breaking the bank.
