How do you teach your child to read? – is a question every parent asks sooner or later. The shelves of bookstores are full of textbooks and aids for every taste and pocket, on the Internet, there is free access to a large number of unique author’s techniques … How to deal in all this variety? And in general, how many years can you start learning to read, to get good results in the future?
When to start
American expert Glenn Doman, who invented the method of whole words, said, “To teach a six-month child is much easier than a year-old, and a year-old – much easier than a six-year-old!
But here’s the problem. It turned out that children who were taught to read too early, most of them had problems with social development. Psychologists have found that these kids were very difficult in the children’s team in the garden. And all because they missed one of the stages of their development, in which socialization skills are formed because they were learning to read at the same time! In addition, speech therapists found that such babies did not understand the meaning of the read text at all, they just learned how to correctly put certain “symbols” into words.
Who to listen to? When should you start teaching your child to read? – you ask. We suggest that you use common sense. Agree, no one knows your child better than you, which means you can determine when to start teaching your baby to read. How? There are certain physiological signs, highlighted by psychologists, which will help you navigate:
- Your child is already talking in sentences.
- Phonemic hearing is well developed. How can you tell? If a baby can identify a common sound in several, or pick up a word on the letters you have given him/her, then he/she is ready to learn.
- The child does not have serious speech problems.
- Orientation in space is formed at a certain level – the baby distinguishes between “right” and “left”, “up” and “down” and so on.
If all four signs are observed in your child, you can safely start learning. Statistically, most children are ready by about five years of age.
Speech centers for reading develop by the age of 6-7 years. That is, it is necessary or not necessary to teach your baby to read earlier – this is a choice of each parent, depending on the individual peculiarities of the child.
Methods of teaching reading
Despite a variety of techniques that solve the question of how to teach a child to read, among them, there are only three directions, three ways of teaching, three different approaches, each of which has a minimum unit of reading.
The sound method.
This is a traditional, familiar to us, and therefore understandable method. Remember, it used to be the only way to teach children from 3 to 6 years old to read. The minimum unit here is a sound and a letter. First, the child called a sound, and then showed the corresponding letter. The advantage of this method: it not only teaches proper reading, but also gives a more competent sound and letter analysis, and awareness of the text. Minus: a certain complexity in the construction of sounds into syllables.
Theoretically, this could also include the already mentioned system of the earliest development. It is necessary to show cards with letters and name them from birth! However, there is one condition – nothing should fall into a child’s field of vision. Are you ready for such radical “education”?
Whole Word Method
Another method for learning from diapers. The minimum unit of reading here is a whole word. The idea is that the child is shown cards with words that he must memorize. Over time, the baby begins to recognize these words everywhere – on signs, in books, in the inscriptions on the packages, and so on… The whole-word teaching method was very popular in the 90s. It had the advantage that the child sort of quickly builds up a vocabulary. Nevertheless, not every kid can remember information in this volume. In addition, many children do not recognize these words, if they are written in a different font or color.
Invented the way American scientist Glen Doman. The practice has shown that his method is perfectly suited for teaching deaf kids to read. In English-speaking countries, it is also popular because words there are not changed in gender and case. In Russian, however, there are a large number of word forms, which must also be memorized separately. Otherwise, a child later can not, or even does not want to change the words correctly in number, gender, and case.
So, we begin to teach your child to read. First, we introduce him to the sound, we ask him to find this sound among the others, as well as in a word, to determine the position of this sound in the word (beginning, middle, or end).
Do not force a child to memorize every letter, fixing a picture: A – Apple, B – bear. This way is good only for memorizing the alphabet, but not for learning to read.
Parents who do not know how to teach a child to read, introduce him to the letters first. He memorizes their names: A, B, C, D… But when the letters begin to add up, the simple word MAMA sounds like eMAMA, the baby does not understand what word he read. When showing the letters, make sure to call them what they sound like. If in the alphabet, for example, we call the letter EM, then the child is taught that it is Mmmm, because we will then need to connect it to a vowel sound and read it with a vowel letter. Let the processes of recognizing letters and connecting them into syllables go in parallel – it will be easier to teach the child.
It is important to read the word as it is written so that there was no muted voiced consonants. It says “MOLOKO”, then the child should read it the same way. When we only acquaint baby with the letters, they should have a clear outline without any additional ornamentation, embellishments, elements. Take this into account when selecting alphabets and primers.
To strengthen the skills and awareness of reading, you need to give your child the opportunity to make words from cut letters or magnetic alphabet. Also, note that a baby gets tired quickly, so do not make him read for hours a thick book of fairy tales of the peoples of the world.
Rules for learning to read
If you have decided to teach your child to read, then follow certain rules:
- Remember that it is very dangerous to apply several teaching methods at once.
- Do not use methods in part, for example, it will be a mistake in the Zaitsev system to teach with only cubes, or with only one table.
- Strictly follow all the recommendations of the author of your chosen method.
- Create a comfortable environment for your child to study.
- Make sure that your child likes the process itself.
