For those of you who follow She Scribes (me!) on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/SheScribes) you already know the incredible news – I’m going to Hollywood! I am super duper excited and totally freaking out at the same time. LOL!
On January 21, 2011 I’ll be flying out the Los Angles, California. I have not flown alone since 1990 and even then my sister and brother in law were with me the whole time at the airport and my Mom was waiting for me when I arrived at LAX. This time around it’s just me and no one else.
I also have not been on a plane or in an airport in 9 years! I know things have changed A LOT since then. There are all these rules about what you can and cannot take with you on the plane, plus all those dreaded security checks.
Once in California I’ll be taken to a hotel in Hollywood where I’ll meet many other bloggers who are also attending the event. Several bloggers I have chatted with online for a long time. It will be fun to meet them in person.
While in Hollywood we’ll be seeing an advanced screening of Disney’s newest film, Gnomeo and Juliet, which will be released in theaters in February. ]
Here is the movie’s trailer. It looks really cute and funny too!
Not only do I get an advanced viewing of the movie but I get to attend the red carpet event in Hollywood for the movie too! Wahoo! My second red carpet event. I cannot be anymore excited!
But wait… it gets better. MUCH BETTER!
In addition to the advanced screening and the red carpet event I also get to attend an after party, have lunch at the infamous Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, and… get this… hold on to your seats…
I get to meet with Emily Blunt, James McAvoy and… SIR ELTON JOHN!!!!!!
Whoa! I just got chills when I typed that.
YES! The Elton John! His songs are featured in the movie and I’ll get to meet him the day before the red carpet event. Not to let my age show too much but I grew up listening to his music. Plus I LOVE the songs he did for the Disney film “Lion King” too.
OMG! THE Elton John! WOW!
I’ll also have a chance to meet Emily Blunt (Juliet) who can currently be seen as the character of Princess Mary in the movie Gulliver’s Travels. She’s also appeared in The Devil Wears Prada and Dan in Real Life.
James McAvoy, who voices the character of Gnomeo, is also one of the stars we’ll be meeting. I am most familiar with Jame’s work in the movie Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. He played the part of Mr. Tumnus, the half human/half goat character. He has also appeared in Wantedwith Angelina Jolie and Penelopewith Cristina Ricci.
All of the bloggers who are attending (myself include) will be doing a round table with Elton John, Emily Blunt and James McAvoy as well as the film’s director, Kelly Asbury. Mr. Asbury is the director and co-writer of Gnomeo and Juliet. He’s also worked on other great family films including Kung Fu Panda, Beauty and the Beast, Madagascar 2: Escape from Africa, Shrek and Toy Story – to name a few (he has a long list of movie credits!).
Other talent featured in Gnomeo and Juliet include Michael Cain, Patrick Stewart, Jason Statham, Maggie Smith, Dolly Parton, Hulk Hogan and even Ozzy Osborne, to name a few.
This is going to be a whirl wind trip. I’ll be leaving bright and early on Friday the 21st and heading home Sunday (Jan. 23rd) night. I most likely won’t get home until very early Monday morning.
I’m excited BEYOND WORDS, plus nervous about traveling by myself. I cannot wait to go.
Now comes the hard part – figuring out what to wear! I’m a plus size lady and its easier said then done as far as finding AFFORDABLE fashions that would be considered trendy. I don’t want to dress like my great-Aunt or wear Muumuu dress (you know those HUGE table cloth looking dresses).
If anyone knows of any great, affordable plus size clothing places I should look into please comment on this post and let me know.
I am guessing I’m going to need a couple of pairs of dress slacks and a few dressy blouses. For the red carpet event I’m going to need an awesome cocktail type dress for the red carpet event.
I need to look dressy but not like I’m going out to a night club. I found a few tops that I liked. I figured I’d pair them with a pair of black slacks. Here are a few tops that I really like. I would LOVE your thoughts on them. I live in sweat pants and tee shirts so I’m really clueless as to what is considered trendy and fashionable.
The name of the top is on top and the photo is just below it.
Chiffon Floral Top with Lace Trim
Mesh Kimono Top
Sateen Aztec Tunic
Zebra Poncho with Braided Belt
Summer Breeze Corset Top
Grey Pleated Crochet Top
Leopard Print Sequin Trim Cold Shoulder Tunic
Zebra Print Shirt with Belt
Renaissance Corset Top in Purple Bloom
Smocked Crepe Stretch Tunic
Sequined Printed Crossover Blouse
Antoinette Allure Sweater
Luciana Lace Top
As you can see I am CLUELESS as to what I should wear. I need something dressy for the movie screening Friday night, plus dinner out. I also need something really nice to wear when we meet the talent from the movie as well as lunch at the Four Seasons. We’ll also be having dinner out in Los Angeles some where. So I need at least 2-3 dressy outfits.
For the red carpet event I’m not sure if I’ll be walking the red carpet or in the stands. I know I’ll be viewing the movie as well as attending an after party (not sure if the celebrities will be at that party or not). I’m thinking a cocktail type dress would be nice.
I am IN LOVE with these two dresses.
They are gorgeous! Too bad I won’t look nearly as good in them as the models do.
I also thought this dress was pretty and simple. I’m not sure if its dressy enough.
I’ll need to wear flats since I cannot wear heels. I find them to be very uncomfortable and since I’ll be doing a lot of walking and standing around I think flats would be much more comfortable.
I’m also petite (5’3″) and MUST wear things with sleeves to cover up my fat, flabby arms.
Looking over some of the things I have found thus far I can see that I tend to stick to dark colors (mostly black). I guess that is a force of habit. I wear a lot of dark colors because they are supposedly “slimming” (although I really doubt that). I also don’t like to draw too much attention to myself in case I look like a total dork.
I need to buy shoes too! Yikes! I have to add that to my “list” too. Plus some nice earrings, bracelets and necklaces. I want to make sure that I look as awesome as I can. I know its NOT a “fashion show”. I just want to make sure that I really make a nice impression on everyone and in the event I end up in pictures I want to make sure that I look my very best.
I need all the help I can get! If anyone is great with fashion or knows any great places for plus size AFFORDABLE clothing and affordable jewelry I would love to hear from you. Please comment on this post or feel free to e-mail me directly at SheScribes “at” Optonline “dot” net.
I would also love your opinion on the clothes I have picked out thus far. Are there any that really stand out that you just love? Are there ones that are really ugly? I am CLUELESS and I need all the fashion advice I can get.
I LOVE to watch shows where people get total make overs (hair, make up, clothing). WOW… if only there was a way to get a make over right now I could really use it. I would love to be made over to look awesome for this weekend event. Even when it comes to my hair I’m normally sporting a pony tail because I really don’t know what to do with my hair. I’m a mess! LOL!
Ok, enough rambling. Thanks for reading this far. Wish me luck!

Did I read that correctly – Jason statham!?!! I am so jealous of you , I’m so in love with that man. I hope you have a blast- I’m sure you will look great:)
I really like the first 4 tops and am especially in love with the red one.
The first black dress is my favorite fr the dresses you posted.
I’m not a big fan of the sequin printed crossover top. The leopard print top hmm fim not liking the shape of it but maybe it will look nicer on . You don’t have to wear black pants with them all- you can dress up jeans. I think that red top would look great with a dark blue bootcut jeans and white flats and a white clutch/purse or accented with white bangle.
As for affordable jewelry- I remember seeing nice bracelets at Burlington coat factory for low prices. Get a few different bracelets/bangles, thick and thin- i would wear a bunch of black ones and when you wear them add in two or three bracelets pf another color to “pop” and accent your outfit .

I liked all the tops. A lot of them can be dressed up or down depending on hair, jewelry, shoes, and make up. I wear my dark jeans with boots a lot to dress up an outfit, and if I’m not in the mood, I’ll throw on sneakers or an equally casual shoe.

Congrats! I am so jealous! Anyhoo, for advice. I, too am plus-sized and even though I live in PJ’s most days, I keep up on fashion and trends. First, you are going to want to make sure you have undergarments that fit and are comfortable. The make the foundation of your outfit. Bras that are too small and/or droopy give you the dreaded back rolls or Auntie saggy boobies. Then you should make sure that what you try on is comfortable and fits well- no binding or weird bunching and that you can move comfortably. You don’t want to wear something that is itchy and constricting when you meet Elton! If you go with black slacks, avoid pleated fronts at all costs and don’t hesitate to have a tailor hem them if need be. If you can’t do heels (and I can’t due to a knee injury) a cute and fashionable alternative is ballet flats. Unlike the 1/2 to 1 inch heel on ‘Mom Pumps’, ballet flats are stylish. There is nothing wrong with wearing dark colors, especially to something dressy. It isn’t the stars in classic black attire being derided in the back of rag mags, it is the one in fuschia with ruffles! I know animal prints are ‘trendy’, but wear with caution. Anyone that isn’t Paris Hilton or one of the reality show Real Wives has a hard time pulling this look off. I know on me it looks like I need to be tranquilized and returned to my habitat at the zoo.
The stores I shop at are Fashion Bug, JC Penney, Avenue, Lane Bryant and Catherine’s. Fashion Bug usually has really good sales.
Have fun on your trip! Woo hoo!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! How exciting for you and it sounds like you’re super excited!
On the flying part, you’ll be fine. Just act like you know what you’re doing so you don’t draw attention to yourself. Follow everyone else and you’ll be fine!
For clothing, be sure you pick something you’re comfortable in. The worst thing is to be uncomfortable!
Enjoy the trip!!!!!! 🙂

Congratulations again, Kimberly! I’d go with one of the patterned bloused…personally, I love the sequined printed blouse. The Sateen Aztec is pretty cool, too. The black dresses are awesome. I like the interesting neckline on the first.

I am so excited to meet you! I am having the same dilemma as you – I’m 5’3 too. I want to be comfortable yet somewhat fashionable. I should probably head out to the stores soon, instead of waiting until the last minute 🙂
I’m sure whatever you choose will be just fine!
See you soon 🙂

Kimberly, I very happy for you! Wish I could do this. It will probably be the trip of your lifetime! Dress comfortably and walk with your head up, be proud of yourself and what you do! I too am overweight and avoid belts and sleeveless tops, they are not for me. I personally like the grey pleated crochet top and the Antonette Allure top. I also like the second dark dress, but you choose what you like and you’ll look great in it!!

Have FUN!! I love the first two dresses, and of the tops my favorites are the Sateen Aztec Tunic and the Zebra Shirt with Belt.

Congratulations!!!
I love the blue Antoinette top and the Corset top. Very cute!

I’m short too and also prefer to wear sleeves. I don’t always think short people look real great wearing belted items. I think it breaks us up into two shorter pieces. Just me, probably, but I always think I look shorter in belted pieces.
I really like the Sequined Printed Crossover Blouse and the Leopard Print Sequin Trim Cold Shoulder Tunic.
I like the first two dresses. I can’t wear heels either, kills my back.

Congratulations! Sounds like an amazing experience! My favorite tops are the Chiffon Floral Top with Lace Trim, Summer Breeze Corset Top, Renaissance Corset Top in Purple Bloom and Luciana Lace Top. The first two dresses would both be perfect, but I like the first one better. Kohls also has some great clothes & accessories.

Wow that is so totally awesome I am so jealous! I’ve only been to Hollywood once & I hope to go back again someday. I’m also 5 ft 2 & plus size so yes you probably should go with the black pants
and a couple of dressy tops. Those you have picked look great & I’m sure you’ll be great in them. I would suggest a lacy shawl to throw on it will make you look slimmer too. Good Luck you lucky thing!

Congrats! I can’t imagine being in the presence of Elton John. Wow! I like the leopard top and the first black dress. Have an amazing trip!

Hi!
I live in West Hollywood and have gone to many of these events – you will see everything from jeans to fur. I would definitely stick with black – you can go anywhere and blend in. The first two dresses would be great and I favor the grey pleated top. We have been very chilly (for us) lately and so far the forecast is to stay that way through the 10th – no telling after that! Definitely plan on something to throw on over what you are wearing for warmth. Depending on where the after-party is you may be in for an inside/outside experience. You will be much happier if you focus on comfort rather than glitz. Us locals can spot the out-of-towners easily because they always overdress…….
Have a great time!

I’m happy for you and extremely jealous, all at once. I did have the good fortune to win a trip to a Hollywood movie premiere a few years ago, and we had such a great time. You’re going to have an even better time, though, since they’ve arranged for you to actually meet people, whereas we were just wandering around on our own.
As for what to wear, you need to pick something that fits your personal style. Like, I would never choose the big floral print tops because I don’t like to wear big floral prints. Other people wear them and look great. So, choose what you love, and you’ll feel good about how you look, and that’s what counts!
I do have this recommendation – I want to say it was November when we went to L.A., and I dressed for sunny California. It wasn’t that cold in Florida at the time. It wasn’t too bad out for the red carpet stroll, but the after party was outside on the street (it was blocked off), and I was really chilly. So, check the weather forecast and take a nice shawl or something to cover up, just in case.
I don’t know how this event will be for you, but we were required to leave our camera at the door to the theatre and pick it up later. They were asking for phones as well, but I didn’t have one then. Knowing what I know now, I would be sure to carry a padded bag with a luggage tag on it, because I was really nervous leaving it in a box with everyone else’s device. It was okay, but it was just a little nerve-wracking.
I can’t wait to read your full report on your exciting Hollywood adventure!
Laura Philips says
Congratulations! I hope that you have so much fun. I was completely stressing on my first plane ride last year. I wore slip off shoes so that was one less stress and you can put stuff in your checked bag just your carry on has all of the rules. I am not good with fashion, but JC Penneys usually has cheap jewelry, it is usually always on sale. I like wide leg trouser pants with the pen stripe. I am plus sized, but a lot taller. I am not sure how that would look on someone you height. I am not big on dresses, but long skirts are cute. I don’t really like the animal prints on anyone, but maybe you can pull it off. What I always do when I go somewhere and I have no idea what to wear is I ask the other people what they are wearing even if they are different sizes than I am. I know you probably can’t meet up with the other blogger’s and go shopping with them because they are probably located everywhere, but if you can get in touch with them yo should and see exactly what they are wearing and maybe that can help. For me there is always someone else that is more confident about choosing clothes. Good Luck and I hope that you have so much fun. The person I would like to meet would be Jason Statham, maybe you will get a peek at him. He is pretty.
