Do you have any resolutions for the new year? Not me. I don’t make resolutions. I think they set you up for failure (sadly). Instead, I choose to make smaller, more achievable, goals.
Eating right, losing weight, drinking more water and exercising are almost always at the top of most people’s resolutions list. Admittedly, they are usually on the top of mine too, but I prefer to make conscious “baby steps” instead of telling myself I’ll never eat another cookie, or I’ll lose 50 pounds by the end of the year (I wish!).
When it comes to food, I am going to make the effort to be more mindful of what I eat, eat in moderation, and look for better, healthier, alternatives. I’m not going to deprive myself of cookies. I’ll just have one or two instead of five or six.
There are some foods I cannot live without. If I were to go on a diet or a diet plan, there are some things I simply cannot give up – coffee, cheese and pizza.
I love pizza so much. I could literally eat it every day if it were possible (breakfast, lunch and dinner!). That is how much I love pizza. I love all types of pizza too. Pineapple pizza is my most favorite, but I also love chicken pizza, pizza with pepperoni and pizza with veggie toppings.
I know that I shouldn’t eat a lot of carbs. Sadly, pizza is made out of pizza dough, which is a carb. It’s not so much the toppings that are not good for you (too much of the meats are not good for you), but the dough that makes the crust.
A Phoenix-based company called Spinato’s Fine Foods has come up with a yummy solution – broccoli crust pizza.
The Spinato’s family has run its five pizzerias across Phoenix, AZ for over 45 years and have recently entered into the grocery industry.
Thankfully my family and I love broccoli, and eat it once or twice a week. Growing up, my kids also ate spinach, cauliflower and chick peas (to name a few). I’m grateful that they’ve always loved vegetables.
Spinato’s broccoli crush pizzas are naturally gluten-free and have a very subtle broccoli flavor, which makes them the perfect veggie-packed option for even the pickiest of eaters.
The broccoli crust pizzas are available in a variety of delicious flavors – Mediterranean Supreme, Primavera and Aged Asiago, Romano, Mozzarella, and Margherita with Slow-Roasted Tomatoes.
I was sent some of their broccoli crusted pizzas to review.
The pizzas look just like a regular frozen pizza. The crust does not look like it’s made out of broccoli. I was expecting it to be green and/or have green broccoli chunks in it. If I didn’t already know that the crust was made out of broccoli I would have never known to be honest with you.
I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the pizza. The crust, in my opinion, did not taste like broccoli at all. It really didn’t. It tasted like a normal frozen pizza crust. Even both of my kids (young adult) commented that the crust did not taste like broccoli. My husband is the picky eater in the family. He opted not to try any of the pizzas I was sent to review. His loss! That meant more for the rest of us. Ha Ha.
The broccoli crusted pizza baked in the oven just like a traditional frozen pizza.
The toppings tasted great. They were fresh tasting. They didn’t taste like they were sitting in a freezer for a year. It could have easily passed off as a handmade pizza that was just made.
The only difference between the broccoli crust and a regular frozen pizza crust is that it didn’t seem to get as crispy (hard) are a regular crush. That is fine. I really didn’t mind it. The crust is also thin, which is something I wasn’t used to. We order pizza more so than make frozen pizza, so I am used to a thicker crust. But again, I honestly didn’t mind.
Me and my kids really enjoyed these pizzas. I would gladly buy them again and again (the Primavera and Aged Asiago, Romano, Mozzarella are AMAZING!). I have not seen them locally, but every time I go food shopping I keep an eye out for them.
These are certainly a great choice if you want to incorporate more vegetables into your diet (or your family’s diet), and if you are looking to reduce your carb intake and want a better for you pizza option.
