I love music. I can’t go a day without listening to my favorite tunes. I must have hundreds of songs saved on my Spotify account. I have them divided up into specific genres, as well as “moods.” By “moods” I mean I have songs that will give me energy when I listen to them, and songs that make me feel more mellow.
I honestly think if I had to give up one things – Spotify, Netflix or Amazon Prime – I’d probably keep Spotify and eliminate the other two. That is how much music means to me.
I was recently sent a game to review that ideal for people who love music. It’s for people ages 16+, unless you know someone younger who is a music expert. It’s called Hitster.
For music-loving Dads, this music party game is a great summer party game . . . or a gift for Father’s Day! Take a trip down memory lane with 300 hits from the last 100 years. By scanning a card with the free app, players take turns guessing the release date, artist name and song title to build their music timeline! Everything from AC/DC to Bruce Springsteen to Harry Styles and Backstreet Boys, the game play is simple but a ton of fun! First with a timeline of 10 songs wins!
Hitster can be played with 2-10 people. This would make a great backyard barbecue game with family and friends.
You’ll need to download the free Hitster app on your phone. You’ll also need a Spotify account. If you don’t have one you can sign up for a free Spotify account (you’ll just have to deal with the occasional ad).
Hitster comes with an assortment of cards. On one side you’ll see a QR code. On the other side you’ll see a year, the song name and the artist. The cards have dates ranging from the 1950’s to 2023.
In addition to the cards you’ll find some round tokens.
Playing Hitster is easy. You can play as an individual or a team.
Put the cards and tokens in the middle of the play area. Each person or team takes a card and places it upfront displaying the year, song and artist. That is the starting point.
When it’s your turn you draw a card from the deck, with ONLY the QR code side showing. Using your phone (or the phone of the person who has the game app), scan the QR code. A song will start playing. Listen to the song as long as you need to. Once you think you know the YEAR the song came out, place the card on your timeline.
Other players can challenge your guess.

If you are correct, the card stays on your timeline. The first person to have ten (10) cards on their timeline wins the game.
I don’t think I explained the directions well enough, but trust me, it’s a very easy game to play. There are also more advanced levels where you need to guess the year, artist and song title.
There are also the tokens which you can use to your benefit. You can win/lose tokens during the course of the game (the tokens don’t help you win in the long run – you need to have ten cards on your timeline in proper order).
My husband and I played the game this way a couple of times, and it was fun. I also realized that my husband is a little too good when it comes to song dates. He blew my mind! I know he’s great with stuff like that, but playing the game against him there was no way I’d win.
My husband and I also use this game similar to “name that tune” (do you remember that show?). I’d play the QR code for a song and we’d see who is the first person to name the song. That way works too. We do it for fun, not to win.
This game has a plethora of music from the 1950’s until now. There are A LOT of cards, so there is no way you’d get bored of this game any time soon. The songs are also from different genres (country, rap, dance, disco…), which made it more challenging (I am not familiar with country or rap music).
Playing this game has caused me to add more music to my Spotify playlists. I’ll hear a song long forgotten and want to listen to it, so I just add it a Spotify play list that I already have.
This is a fun game for anyone who loves and appreciates music.
You can find Hitster at retailers such as Target (non-affiliate link) and Amazon.
What do you think of this game? Does it sound like a game you’d love to play? Feel free to comment and share your thoughts.
