Oh how I miss having a bed – a REAL bed.
When my husband and I moved into our one bedroom condo we transformed the dining room into a nursery/bedroom for our baby daughter. It was an ideal arrangement.
My husband and I had a beautiful “sleigh bed.” It was one of my most favorite pieces of furniture.
When I became pregnant with our son we assumed the room we created for our daughter would be enough for two children. It did work for a while, but once our son graduated to a toddler bed their little room became two small for two young children. My husband and I had to make the ultimate sacrifice – give up our bedroom for the kids. That was 15+ years ago. For the pat 15+ years my husband and I have been sleeping in the living room (we converted the kid’s room back in the dining room since we don’t have an eat-in kitchen).
We slept on a sofa bed for a few years but it became too uncomfortable. If you have ever spent any time on a sofa bed you know about the dreaded bar that digs into your back.
We decided to get rid of the sofa bed and try a day bed instead. That worked OK for a while, but guests felt uncomfortable sitting on the day bed instead of a regular couch. Plus we missed being able to cuddle together at night (it was hard to do when we slept in separate twin size beds).
We then graduated to an air mattress. This was back in the day when air mattresses first came out.
The air mattress we had was not comfortable to sleep in at all. It was too soft and jiggled like JELL-O when we moved/rolled around. It was like sleeping on a water bed. Not only that it was a major production to get it inflated at night and deflated in the morning.
We gave up on the air mattress and went back to a sofa bed, where we have been sleeping for the past several years.
I still think air mattresses are a great idea, most especially if you have house guests and not enough beds in your home. The one we had (one of the originals) was not very practical. Thankfully they have advanced over the years.
I received to review the ALWAYZAIRE inflatable mattress, available at Walmart. Specially, I received the Fortech 17″ Queen Airbed by Bestway with a Built-in Alwayzaire Pump and 3 Preset Comfort Levels.
Now… I’ll be the first to say that air mattresses are horrible, based on my PAST experiences. That all changed when my husband and I tried out the ALWAYZAIRE inflatable mattress.
The queen size air mattress measure 80″ x 60″ x 17″. I am a “plus size” woman and my husband and I were able to sleep comfortably on the air mattress with plenty of room for the both of us.
Inflating the air mattress is super easy. Simply plug it in and in two minutes (give or take – I didn’t clock it) the mattress is inflated with just one simply press of a button.
Here is a video of my husband putting air into the mattress. I only shot it for 40 seconds because I didn’t think people wanted to watch a two minute video of a air mattress being filled. I just wanted to show readers a bit of how it looks and sounds.
The panel for the mattress is lit so you can see the buttons in a darkened room.
What is unique about this air mattress is that you can adjust the firmness to what is most comfortable to you. There are three firmness options to choose from. With other air mattresses you only get one firmness.
In addition to being able to select the best firmness for you and your partner, the air mattress continuous monitors the firmness of the bed and if it senses it’s losing firmness it will add more air into the mattress. You don’t have to do a thing. You don’t even realize it’s adding more air, at least my husband and I never heard anything. The air mattress kept its firmness as far as we could tell.
The mattress it’s self is covered in a canvas-like fabric on the top, bottom and sides. It doesn’t feel like you are sleeping on a piece of plastic. It has the look and feel (in a way) of a real mattress (non-air one).
The bed is made with a sturdy “Y-Beam” construction for added strength and stability. It even has a “frame” built around it to help you from sliding off. I can tell you from my own experience that the air mattress we had years ago didn’t have that and I always felt like I was going to slip off because it was too rounded on the sides.
This air mattress can be enjoyed “on-the-go” because it comes with a handy travel bag. My husband and I found it next to impossible to get it in the travel bag. We tried but to no avail.
This air mattress has a lot of “pros.” The only “cons” I can think of is that it’s heavy in weight and hard to roll up when not in use (we gave up trying to get it in the travel bag). It also took a while for the air to come out of it (longer than it took to inflate it) and we had to walk around on it a bit to squeeze out the left over air before rolling it up.
Compared to our other air mattress experience, the ALWAYZAIRE inflatable mattress is by far the best one.
As far as the price I feel like the ALWAYZAIRE inflatable air mattress is comparable in price to other air mattresses.
I think it’s a great idea to keep an air mattress like this on hand for overnight guests, most especially if you don’t have enough beds. This would also work well with sleep overs or even college dorm rooms.
If you travel in an RV or enjoy camping, the ALWAYZAIRE inflatable mattress can help you feel right at home sleeping on a comfortable bed.
